Phone, 893 FORMER COUNTY GIRL Miss Aetna Emmell, Teacher in India, M. E. Auspices, Writes WAS ENROUTE TO ORIENT Stops and Sees Sector Captured From Germans by Jspantui Miss Aetna Emmell, well known at I'armington and Scholia, now in India, to which place she has been appointed by the M. K. auth orities as a teacher and mission ary, was in the famous Shantung sector, Nov. lti, and under that date, writes: "Just think of it - we are iu the much-discussed Shantung province. This port is not in our regular course, but we stopped to disembark 8,000 Chinese sol diers, who were in France as workmen during the war. Isn't that an experience for vou? was out just now watching them get ready to land and they were as excited as I suppoc hoy only could be. So far tl is hat tei 11 a wonderful trip and I'm not half wav there. Fortunately our bail weather came at the firt of the journey, so, after a week of inal de. mer I tun feeling sp'emlid. We encountered one .storm which I was told was the worst the ship had ever experienced -some ev ;K-rient for a tendetioot. Our tirst stop was in Yokohama on Armistice Day. It gave us a typi cal Oregon welcome, rain and w ind. We jostled umbrellas w ith the Japs and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The little boys ami girls are very cunning. We watched them leave school at in termission and they came out "bobbing" their umbrellas for all the world like our own children in the States. Japanese shops open ri'flit into the street and families live in them so their domestic life wa open to all mothers putting children to bed, families eating, people working and little hoys rending or studing. Our next stop was Kiuluv where we had fine weather, and w here one of our passengers pro cured a 12-piece tea set for $7.50. The harbor at Kiobe was beauti ful with lumdreds upon hundred', of sail boats, supposnbly fishing smacks. Kiobe is built on the w.ter front, the mountain riv ing abruptly behind. We aw the statue of Buddha, some sacred row s and myriads of other figures in one of the shops. Thi Japs are wonderfully polite, and bow and smile and laugh. route f roinKiolie to Nagasaika we pass ed by hundreds of islands in the "Inland Sea," with fishing vil lages in coves, and the cliffs were terraced and cultivated now in wheat, they say. We coaled at Naga.stka, and men and women carried it from the barce in has kets which held perhaps a peck. These baskets were tossed from one to another until they reached the hold, keeping it up all day to be relieved by shifts. We visited the M. E. mission at Nagasika. and it is located on a hill, begin ning with wintergarten and end ing with a four year college. Miss Uussell founded this school, and some of the camphor trees w hich she planted have grown to great size. The Christian women who teach here appear to be happy and contented. We took a ricki sha ride about the city and visited a Shinto Temple. So one was worshipping and children were playing on the flight after flight of steps leading to the top, and, of course, some were .selling sou venirs. Tsing Tao (Shantung) was built entirely by the Germans and on the streets one would think ve were in a German town, only for the fact that Japanese military officers arc conspicuous with their Khaki and clanking of swords. It is interesting to note that thp Jap anese are putting up the same character of nuildings. This city was captured from the Germans by the Japs in 1914, the latter coming in over the hill, thus shultii p off. retreat. I an. told that I he Japnnese were interested in sendii g out the 3,000 soldiers to France from this point because they would upon their return be better citizens. The irony of fate is that the 8,000 returned to find their Shantung country in the possession of some one else. But at that these soldiers looked bet ter than their stay-at-homes. One chap wanted his picture taken, but he could not be induced to smile it was a serious business with him.-' He stood like a ram rod, with his chin in the air, and looked as tho he were attending his own funeral. Well, I must quit before I (ret 'Titer' crimp. Very Sincerely." COUNTY AGENT PLAN WINS Twenty three Oregon counties now have county agricultural ai'iils.
