C. Ilailev place. Mrs. Hergert was wry ill with the Flu, and her condition was considered critical. She is now mending. Fred and wife will slay down until after the Holidays, and then Fred cal culates to ship back a ear-load of dairy cattle if he enn buy them right. Grant Dorland, who went from here to the training camps and thence to France, writes his mother, under date of Nov. 18th, that he wns O. K. at the front. His nephew, Earl Sumner, who is a nephew of J. II. Dorland, is now in San Francisco, where he is being treated by U. S. Sur geons for bone graft, his leg hav ing been badly shattered. It 'will still take several months to heal, but the surgeons tell him be will have as good a leg as ever when bis new growth gets set. JOS. A. ALTMAN Joseph Albert Altaian, of Wesl Baseline St., Hillsbnro, died at his home Friday morning, Dec. (.1, 1!US, at 9:30 a. m., after an illness of short duration. He was born in Holmes County, Ohio, Di e. 2!, 1S57, and w hen a young man learned the carpenter trade. He moved to Missouri early in life and was married to Miss Amy Howard, at Hamilton, Mo., March 2li, 1871!. They came to Oregon in 1910, settling for a few mouths at Klamath Falls, la ter coming to llillshoro. The funeral took place Sunday from the First Advent Church, Itcv. Lucas, of Portland, conduct ing the service. Mr. Alt nuiii is survived by his widow and the following children --Miss Irene Altman, at home; Finnic, wife of Oscar Brenne man, of Medford, Ore.; Clarence Altman, Portland; Lewis Alt man, Oreneo; Fred, llillshoro. employed in Portland. Sergeant Gembella went across in December, .1017, and has been at the front since early last summer. An invitation was received to visit the Martha Washington Chapter, of Portland, Monday evening. v Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Vande hey, of Roy, have received a let ter from their son, August, at the West Front, in France, dated ihe day after the armistice was sign ed. Young Vandchey was with Vaiidcrgnnden from the time they left Camp Lewis together until about 20 days before the companion was kiled. The last time he saw hint was when they parted at two o'clock one morn ing a few, days before Vander zanden was killed. Vandehey writes that be has been over the top, and that no one knows just how one feels until they take the trip thinking that their turn to stop a bullet is coining every sec ond. Millard's last letter was written Nov. 1, and the letter was not like the usual message, cither in penmanship or spirit. J. I). l'rig more, a Y. M. ('. A. secretary. who visited Millard at the hospi tal every d.tv, wrote a letter de tailing his visits to the boy, hut tin's letter is not dated, and was probably written tarlv in Novem ber. Private Gales was wounded July 19, having both bones in his left leg .shattered. This wound had entirely healed, but he was attacked by pleurisy later and drainage lubes were inserted in Ids back. t Private Gales was a volunteer in the Third Oregon, and went across in December, 1 917. He wan one of the lirst of the Oregon boys lo get into action. I lis brother. C. Carroll, was wound ed in action. May 29, and died June 12. lie is survived by his parents. Private C. Carroll Gates, who died June 12, from wounds re ceived in action May 2i. Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Gates, and a sister, Miss Olive Gates. If the telegram is correct and it is quite likely that it is Mr. and Mrs. Gates have been doubly bereaved, in losing both sons in the service of their country, both being volunteers. Mr. Gates has cabled to Mr. Priginore to verify the report of the government. Private (tales was but 19 years of age. GRANGE ELECTS The Patrons of Husbandry met Dee. It, for its last meeting of the year. Over thirty members, v till a few visitors, were present. Three new members were-initiated. The Grange is in fine work ing condition, taking in one or more members every session. William Sehulnicrieh was elect ed Worthy Master, ami Mrs. Ma ry Shute, who has been secretary for years, was re-elected by ac clamation.
