Alexander, Weir, of Cooper Moun
tain, now in hia 83rd year, last
Sunday met with an old ship
mate who was with him on the
famous Perry expedition to Japan
in 1853-4. To the best of their
knowledge Mr. Weir and hia
compatriot are the sole survivors
of the trip that cemented the
friendship of Japan and the
United States. Mr. Hardy lives
near Kin? Heights, Portland,
and the two met Sunday by ap
pointment
Mr. Weir was born in Glascow.
Scotland, and followed the sea
from boyhood. Finding himself
in Pyta. Peru, with "noihinsr in
siirht" he shiDDed on a whaler
to Valparaiso, and there on April
