President Taft, in the veto of the Arizona and New Mexico statehood bills, has followed a petty partisan policy that will not help him in the coming cam paign. The real crux of the veto probably lays in the fact that the applying states are not blessed with a majority for Mr. Taft's party. Admission would have meant more U. S. Senators op posed to the standpatters. NANCY S. SEWELL Mrs. Nancy S. Sewell. widow of Thomas G. Sewell, died at the home of Mrs. M. Harvey, in Hillsboro, Saturday evening, Au gust 12, 1911. She was born in Chill icothe, Ohio, Feb. 2, 1829. and her maiden name was Odel. Her parents moved to Indiana when she was an infant She was united in marriage to Mr. Sewell, at Pine Village, Indiana, in liy, ana aner a lew years they moved to Kansas. Twenty two years ago, in 1889, thev moved to Hillsboro, and settled this side of West Union. The husband died eleven years ago. lhe following children survive Mr3. Mary E. Leatherman, Bon nie, 111.; J. W. Sewell. Snake River, Wash.;C. L. Sewell, Hills boro. and Mrs. Martha J. Har vey, wife of M. M. Harvey, Hills boro. Four other children were born to the union, all of whom are deceased; The late A. R. Sewell, Kansas; J, Sewell, Ne braska; Thos. G. Sewell, who died here in 1904; and one child that died in infancy. Mrs. Sewell belonged to the Free Methodist Church, and was a woman of tender characteris tics. The funeral service? were held Tuesday afternoon, at the Evangelical, Church. Rev. W. N. Coffee, of Portland, officiating. Interment was at West Union, by the side of her son. Card ol Thanks C. There are two days that the amusement-loying populace al ways look forward to with pleas ure circus day and minstrel day. Circus day has passed and min strel day is almost here, and this time it is the best of allRich ards & Pringle's Minstrels. They will appear at the Cres ent Theatre, on Saturday, Aug. 19. The company is headed by those old-time favorites, Clarence Pow ell and Billy King, together with j nearly forty others. As is their custom, the program will be en tirely new. Fred Simpson, known through out the country as "The Black Pryor," still has charge of the famous Georgia Band. The big street parade will take place promptly at noon. There will be a free band concert in front of the theatre at 7:30 o'clock in the evening. F. M. Crabtree, of Laurel, was in the city last evening. He stated to an Argus reporter that he intended paying $1.25 per hundred for picking this Fall, and expects to open his yard about September 2. Mr. Crab tree is the first to report a raise on the price of picking, and says that he is willing to grant that concession, considering the price of the product AROUS. Deceased was a member of the Oregon Pioneer Ass'n., and was enlisted in the Oregon Mounted Infantry in the Yakima Indian War. 1856-7. The remains were shipped to this city, arriving this evening. The funeral will take place at 11 a. m., Saturday, at the Donelson Undertaking parlors, and inter ment will be in the I. 0. O. F. cemetery. Mr. Garrison was in many re spects a gifted man, and he wielded a very facile pen. Daniel Seour, aged 55 years, died at Forest Grove, Tuesday afternoon, at the family home.
