ers residing in snid strip signed the in
itiative petitions, and aome of whom
are now against its p.mage, ni l less
than io )er Cent of all the voters of this
county signed the Mine. Ninety per
cent of the signatures were procured in
Multnomah county, most of them pre
sumably at a stipulated priee per name,
a great majority of the signers having
no intrrtst whatever in the measure.
At the -oplc in this area will he no
nearer to Portland by this change, ami
as. the voters of Washington county,
outside of this strip, are practically
unanimous against It, and quite a large
per cent of those within the district are
also opposing it, and as it will lie a great
injustice to the- county, without mater
ial hem-fit to any one, we urge the vot
ers of the state to vote no on the propo
sition."

J. P. Nunn, Federal judjfe at
Madisonville, Ky., was in the
city, Tuesday, for a few hours,
the jruest of J. A. Imbrie and
family, J ude Nunn eoniinp; from
the town wherein Mr. Imbrie's
sister, Mrs. V. H. P.ehne, re
sides. Jud;e Nunn was much
pleased with Oregon, and thought
the view of the Northeast plains,
from Mr. Imbrie's home, ex
tending to the Cedar Mills and
Phillips mountains, was one of
the prettiest sights he had ever
beheld. The judge has never
seen a hopyard, and he has par
tially promised to come out and
spend a couple of days with bis
host, who has promised to show
him about the plains. J. A. was
very much pleased to meet Mr,
Nunn, and speaking of his guest,
said: "lie is a Southerner; a
democrat; and an alfahle gentle
man, and I do not know that I
have ever met a gentleman whom
I have liked so well upon first
acquaintance."
Elmer Parsell, of near Seap
poose, and who has been work
ing at the liurlington sawmill,
was held by the U. S. Commis
sioner, Monday, to appear before
the Federal (irand jury at the
next Portland session, the charge
being assaulting Mail carrier
John Ryan, of Route U, out of
this city. Young Ryan stood
them oil' with a gun, but this
does not help Parsell 's case.
Harvey Dance, of near Laurel,
and who is farming the White
place on Chehalem Mountain,
was in town Tuesday.
W. K. McCourts and wife re
turned Monday evening from an
extended stay at Newport.
