We don't eat much candy, bnt
what we do eat, we want to be of
the best and most wholesome qual-
ty that the market affords. Have
you tried the "Den of Sweets" for
goodies? They make candy every
day, and you are invited to etop
and have a look. They want to
convince you that their candy is
pure, and made to eat, and not
merely to sell. 35.
Washington Cabler, who was ar
rested on complaint of Morritz Ze
rek, last week, at West Portland
Heights, in this county, so a charge
of eUaling lome tools belonging to
the latter, had a hearing yesterday,
before Judge Bagley. Zerek failed
to identify as his own, the tools
which were found in Cabler e pos
session, by an oflicer armed with a
search warrant. Cabler finally said
he did not know whether he tools
belonged to him or not, although
be at first wsb positive they did, as
there were no distinguishing marks
upon them. The Court discharged
Cabler.
A son of Jake Schneider, who
lives on the Milne farm, north of
town, met with a peculiar and
painful accident Monday, while
watching his father, who was split
ting a log, by driving a steel wedge
into it with a steel Bledge. While
thus occupied, a splinter from the
wedge new off and entered a corner
of the boy's right eye, penetratiag
behind the eyeball, and just miss'
ing the brain, by the thickness of
an ordinary piece of writing paper
The boy suffered much agony, and
was brought to town, when Dr.
Tamiesie extracted the splinter, af
ter an anaeetbetio had been ad
ministered by Dr. Wood. It is the
opinion of the doctors that the boy
will fully regain bis sight.

Six
Warrants on the County road fund
are being indorsed, after registra
tion by the County Treasurer as
"not paid for want of funds." They
will draw G per cent, interest un
til paid. Ths reason is that the
county road fund is exhausted.
The levy for both road funds for
this year was one and three quar
ter centB, or 11.75 per hundred.
The gross amount of taxable prop
erty upon which this levy was
rasde, was $12,040,573, and each of
ths two road funds received $10,
500, or a total of 1 2 1,000. The
balance of County road fund, left
over from the year previous, on
January 1, 1!X)7, was $7,473.08.
Tbs amount of money diverted
from the general fund to the coco
ty road fund, einca January 1st,
wss $1C,500, making a total of
county road fund expended thus
far, this year, $31,473 08. This
amount has nothiog to do with the
district road fund. The unpaid
warrants will not be redeemed un
til after the next tax collecting
time, which will be in the Spring
of 11)08.

Business in Hillsboro seems to
go ahead just about sb usual. Our
business men all have good stocks
of goods, and the farmers have
plenty of produce to sell. Not a
single Hillsboro business house has
failed, and there is no likelihood of
failures, so business men say. In
tbe meantime it is said, by those
who claim to know, that the finan
cial horizon is clearing in the East,
as well as in the West, and that
business on this Coast will soon be
running smoothly, as of yore.
