courthouse. From there he start

his vest pocket. When he reached
the depot he discovered that he
was on fire. There was a pretty
warm spot, and as he bad papers
in the pocket, the spark got in
some deadly work. Bigby went
into the receptacle and pulled out
the wad. A check on a Portland
bank waB badly burned, but was
still negotiable. Not bo, however,
with a twenty dollar treasury note,
which was all charred and unrecog'
mzable, save one corner, on which
was the big "AX, reminding Big
by of the many cold birds and hot
ties that his short smoke cost him.
"By Gee!" quoth Bigby. "I've
smoked away many a twenty in
my 45 years of life, but that was a
little the fastest smoking I ever
did. Besides, it knocks the profit
out of my trip, and there is no way
I cao make it back io my expense
account, for that is now loaded as
much as it will carry."

A fellow drove through town at
noon today, having a team that
was a curiotity. The horses were
not much higher than the average
Shetland pony, and their legs, nat
urally, were very short. Io length,
however, their bodies were fully as
long as tie average horse, and the
span looked like a pair of German
dachshund!. Their peculiar for
mation of bodies, however, did not
seem to interfere with their travel
ing abilities, as they could strike a
pretty pace. j. w. Bailey was
particularly taken with the team
and tried to buy them to use as a
vacation team, but the owner re
fused to sell.
