HAD MONEY TO BURN AND IIEIRNED IT Timber Cruiser Scorches a . Twenty Hollar Bill PIPE IGNITES HIS CURRENCY Thoi. Bigby Hai Ptcaliar Experltscc Wbile Enroute U Dtpat Tbos. Bigby, a timber cruiser in the employ of some of the big tim ber land purchasers, was in town yesterday. There ie nothing par ticularly significant about Mr. Bigby'i visit to this city, as Hills boro is being visited by timber barons, timber cruisers, and timber sellers, these days, io myriads. But Mr. Bigby learned a lesion while here that will last him a while. He came io from the Ne halem via Glenwood and Forest Grove, and then made trip to the courthouse. From there he start ed to the train to go to Portland. While en route to the depot he lighted his pipe; when he reached the Milne place he knocked the ashes out of his pipe, which was a short one, and put the dudeen in his vest pocket. When he reached the depot he discovered that he was on fire. There was a pretty warm spot, and as he bad papers in the pocket, the spark got in some deadly work. Bigby went into the receptacle and pulled out the wad. A check on a Portland bank waB badly burned, but was still negotiable. Not bo, however, with a twenty dollar treasury note, which was all charred and unrecog' mzable, save one corner, on which was the big "AX, reminding Big by of the many cold birds and hot ties that his short smoke cost him. "By Gee!" quoth Bigby. "I've smoked away many a twenty in my 45 years of life, but that was a little the fastest smoking I ever did. Besides, it knocks the profit out of my trip, and there is no way I cao make it back io my expense account, for that is now loaded as much as it will carry." SIDEWALK NOTICE Notice ia hereby given that if prop erty owners do not at once make preparation to build, and immedi ately build defective sidewalks, or put them in a decent Btate of re pairs, the city will construct same and proceed to collect the cost of construction. This order also ap plies to cutting of briars and weeds alongside and interfering with the walks. John Dennis, Mayor. Hillsboro, July 25, 1907. Notice to Consumers The city water and light collections will hereafter be made by the City Treasurer, A. C. Sbute, at the Shute Bank, and collections will be made from the 1st to the 5th of each month, during banking hours. H. T. Bagley, Recorder. Hillsboro, Oregon, July 25, 1907. The county exhibiu at the Ore gon State Fair in Salem are always interesting, and big advertising feature for the sections represented. This year six counties will exhibit, as follows: Marion, Benton, Lane, Linn, Clatsop and Multnomah. The last two have never been represent ed before. The county courts Mult nomah and Clatsop counties have each appropriated 11000 to provide for an adequate display. Marion county will exhibit, but she will not compete for the prize. The outside counties say that Marion has an advantage to being nearer the fair. Accordingly she will withdraw and the other contestants will all have an equal chance Washington County should have an exhibit but it will not.
