night and levied a four and hall
mill tax, which wll raise about

park fund will probably be taken
up tomorrow night, when the coun
cil again meets to either buy the

The fruit meeting of 11 Saturday
failed to materialize owing to alio)
attendance, the dates having been
mixed several time. The week
before there was a large number in
town and there was no meeting,
owing to a conflict in the date of
another call at which Inspector
Harris was preent. List Satur
day Mr. Harris deoided to give
plenty of notice and have a rousing
meeting.
It was decided to have an or
ganization erfected here on Sat
urday, December 2'.), at 1:00 in the
afternoon. I nonet-tor Harri will
be here, and will make a practical
demonstration on some of the near
by orchard. Mr. Harris mrans
btmine thi year, and if you have
an orchard it will be well to at
tend. A horticultural Imard will
be organized and oflicers elected.

Il is stated on good authority that
Harrinon Allen, District Attorney,
will resign Lis office about Janu
ary 1 to join the law firm of which
Cbas. Carey is a member, with of
fices in Portland. Mr. Allen has
given eminent satisfaction, and bis
term would have held until the
next general election.
It is stated that Governor Cham
berlain has consulted with Allen
in regards to the proposed resigna
tion, and Chamberlain has agreed
to permit Mr. Alleo's old deputies
to stay. The Governor, it is said,
want the new District Attorney to
come from Washington Counly.nnd
it is stated en good authority that
John M. Wall has been selected as
the man to succeed Mr. Allen Mr.
Wall has been practicing law in
Hillsboro for a number of years,
having studied in the law office of
B. B. Huston. He is high in the
Pythian Grand Body of the state,
and bos a large acquaintance over
the judical dintrict. If the change

After the ceremony the wedding
party was seated to a wedding
breakfast. Mr. and Mrs. Millard
leparted on the evening passenger
for Portland, where they at once
commenced housekeeping. The
happy couple have the beBl wishes
of a large circle of friends.
WOLFE MERRILL
One of the prettiest weddings of
the season took place in Cornelius,
Sunday, Dec. 16, at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Merrill when
their daughter Alta was united in
marriage to Mr. bcott Welle, a
popular young man of this county,
n the presence of about thirty in
timate friends and relatives.
At two o'clock the bridal parly
entered the parlors to the Btrains
of the wedding march played by
Miss bcbolneld, and were met un
der a bower of English Ivy by
Rev. Exon who performed the cere
mooy, during whiott Aliss Hender
son rendered "0 Promise Me."
The bride was winsome in
drees of ivory white taffeta silk
with yoke of duchess lace and car
rying a beautiful bouquet of brides
roses.
The rooms were tastefully deco'
rated with trailioe vines, ferns,
mistletoe and carnations. After
an elaborate wedding dinner Mr.
nd M-s. Wolfs left on the four
o'clock traiu for an extended wed
ding trip. The popularity of the
young couple was evidenced by the
numerous and valuable gifts re
ceivrd.

Prof. B. W. Baroea was a Port
land visitor yesterday, and while
there visited the manual training
department in schools. He will
talk the matter of a manual train
ing department with the Hillsboro
Board in the near future. Forest
Grove has already decided to have
such a department, bat it is bard
to Gnd an instructor at this time.
The boys, commencing with the
Fifth Grade, are taught wood work
and the girls are given lessons in
needle work. School authorities
say that these departments add a
great interest to the schools and
are the redemption of many pupils
who are otherwise a source of much
trouble and anxiety.
The rains of Tuesday, yesterday
and today, have been very heavy
and high water will surely result.
Washington County, however, oth
er than making the road soft, will
experience no ill results, aa the
cleaning out of the Tualatin in the
year of 1S95 and 1806 has stopped
the backwater, giving a lower high
water level in the river and its
tributaries. The last real damage
by high water waa in January,
1905, when the county lost $12,000
by bridges being washed out.
