Connell and Wesley and Miss Bessie end Jack Hoover leave this week for Newport for a vacation at the beach. j Miss Etta Schulmerich returned Monday from an extended visit with her sister, at Hot Lake, and with friends at. Biker City and Sumpttr. Fred Rufener, of Helvetia, was in a few days ago, getting a permit to burn slashing. He savs that the hill yielded the beet crop for years, this season. Postmaster B. P. Cornelius ha received a consignment of new post office lock combination boxes, twenty in number, and they will be installed this week. Fires from the Scappooee and Portland mountains have mad big runs, and are getting dangerously close to the line over at West Union and Bethany. H. A. Hinshaw, Travelling Freight Agent for the Southern Pacific was in town Monday, on business for his company. He was . accompanied by his sen, Harold. Civil Engineer Abry and bis corps, of Banks, were down the first of the week, putting in the cross-section of the mill spur for the tiulsboro Lumber Company. James Meacham, son of J. J Meacham, of Mountaindale, was in town Tuesday, and while here Dr. A. B. Bailey removed a formidable piece of emery from one of his eyes W. C. Jackson, of Glencoe, was in Tuesday and states that winter wheat is going from 30 to 40 bushels in that section. He had 12 acres that yielded 40 to the acre. Hop pickers are notified that picking will begin in the Milne & Schneider yard, near Leisyville, September 5. Those engaged will please govern themselves accord mgly. Stoccman J. Hensley, of Con don, was in town the first of tbe week, bringing in some drsft and standard bred horses. He leaves the last of the week for his eastern Oregon home. Jos. Sax, of Tigardville, was in town Tuesday. He reports the Tigardville office as discontinued and-Tigardville people must now get their mail through Keaverton and Sherwood rural routes. Day, one ot tbe elo quent ministers of the Baptist per suasion, was in town, Tuesday, greeting bis friends. Mr. Day at one time was the local pastor, and made many friends while here. J. C. Schulmerich, of Banks, was in town Monday, and says that the little town at the head of tbe gap leading into the upper Dairy Valley, is rapidly taking on metropolitan airs, and is doing a large business. An Illinois party writes to know if anyone knows anything about one Robert K. Blair, who is alleged to have resided within from Ave to twelve miles of Hillsboro between 1831 and 1888. Blair should now lie about 76 years of age. He was a native of Ireland. Arthur Powell, the eight year old son of J. T. Powell, of West Union, fell from a hayloft, Monday evening, and was rendered uncon scious, sustaining a severe con cussion of tbe brain. Dr. F. A. Bailey was called, and states that tbe boy will recover. The fall was 18 feet, and the lad struck foremost on his head. Directors Collins and Bailey re port that tbe Hillsboro public . schools will not open until the fourth Monday in .September, tbe 24th, owing to the fact tbat hop picking is soon opened. Were school to open earlier there would be h small attendance, as hundreds of psople will be in the hopyards lor several weeks to come. Leo Scbwander and Gotfried Schlaefli, of above Mountaindale, were in Tuesday and hauled out a wagonload of wire for tbe new tele phone system the farmers about Mountaindale are putting in The line will put up its last telephone at the Buridorfer place, eleven miles out of Glencoe. You can't fool an authority on a good cigar. A. C. Shute, Cashier of (he Shute Bank, W. H. Wehrung, J. W. Bailey and John Hou-itr made a trip to tbe Breakwater, below Lin ton, Sunday, after bats, making the run in Mr. Shute's automobile. Zimmerman and wife, of Unseland Farm', below town. SALEM STATE FAIR CAMPERS There is every indication of fine weather for Oregon State Fair week, September 10-15. This kind of weather means that that camp grounds will be crowded and Ibal tbe late comers will have to go to the old grounds northeast of ther.
