Ulrich Haas Jr., accompanied by
his wife, after a long visit with his
father, Ulrich Haas Sr., of West
Union, left today for home, in
Claremont, Iowa.
Alex Chalmers, the Centerrille
stockman, took a fine herd of his
Shorthorn cattle to Portland, last
week, and entered them in the big
Lewis & Clark stock show.

Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Hollenbeck

Holies beck's mother, Mrs. Wilson,
the aged lady who was killed last
week, by a street car on Williams
Avenue. The driver of tbe car was
Frank Armentrout, who formerly
resided at Greenville and Forest
Grove. He feels very badly over

Speaking of progressive little
towns Cornelias is just now lead
ing anything in the shape of a city
on the West Side with a popula
tion anywhere near its numbers.
The business buildings are all neat
ly painted, the streets are kept
cleanly, and there is a general air
of prosperity everywhere. It is
surprising how much a little paint
will lend to the appearance ot a
small place or a bis place, for
that matter. Its new buildings
are all occupied, and Cornelius
promises to be a formidable rival
of Hilleboro and Forest Grove.
C. K. Henry, of South Hillsboro,
is putting in a fine private water
system on his Fair Acres property.
The system will consist of three
wells, which will be operated by a
gasoline engine and a dynamo.
Walt Taylor is putting down the
wells. Tbe supply will givs Mr
Henry all kinds of water for irriga
tion as well as for domestic urea.
S. T. Wslker, of Forest Grove,
writes the weather bureau as fol
lows: "Hop picking, prune dry
ing, clover hailing and grape gtth
ering have all been pushed the
past week and ths first three are
practically done in this neighbor
hood; the rains have started grass
and home early sowing is coming
up; some plowing being done.
P. M. Hermeos, who has been
three years at Sublimity, Ore
where he is in the creamery busi
ness, is down on a visit, and wm in
town Tuesday, with his father,
Wm. Hsrmens, of srboort. Mr
Hermens is looking over the ground
with a view of patting in a cream
ery in this county.
Benj. Birdeell, of Forest Grove,
was down Monday evening, accom
panied by Cbas. Harvey, of Ben
clare, S D., an old time Iowa
friend of his, whom he had not
seen for years. Mr. Harvey start
ed east Tuesday, and from tbe way
he expressed himself, may later
move out to Oregon.
Hop picking is about wound up
all over tbe countv. except a yard
here or there which was delayed by
tbe rain Sunday and Monday.
Jas. H. Sewell, of northeast of
town, would have finished Wednes
day, but for the wet weather, and
Wm. Bagley Sr. would have bad
his crop harvested.
Joseph Young, who was riised
on tbe Hawthorne ranch, east of
town, and who hasn t seen Hillsbo
ro for 30 years, srrived here from
Goldendale, Saturday, to spend the
day. He met many of his old pio
neer friends. Mr. loung is
nephew of the late J. Q. A. Young,
of Cedar MilL
Frederick Geisler, of tbe Jackson
Bottom, has received notice from
the government that he will be
shipped some brook trout in a few
months, to stock bis artificial lake,
mile south of town. It will take
a year or to for the babies to grow,
however, after they are landed
the new home.
Tbe floor has been laid on tbe
Jackson Bottom bridge, and tbe
sway braces and railing corns next
Tbis is ths longest wagon bridge in
tbe county, and affords a convent
ence, through tbe Winter, to
large territory over in the South
end of the county.
Grant Downing, the Vernonia
merchant, was here Sunday, after
load of merchandise for bis store,
Grant says that business is pretty
fair over his way but the peopl
over there are anxiously awaiting
for tbe Portland & Nebalem rai
road.
L. H. Atwater, working for John
Dennis on ths dsiry ranch in East
Hillsboro, fell from a chicken bouse
roof, where he was shingling, Mon
dsy forenoon, and broke one of his
ribs and otherwise bruised himself.
Dr. F. J. Bailey attended tbe pa
tient.
Mrs. Ruth McCurdy, aged
years, died in Portland, September
23, 1905. Deceased was a natiye
of Ohio. She was a mother of . A
McCurdy, of Cornelius, and tbe re
mains were shipped to tbat place
for interment.
