and that said repfanking be done with one
length of good, sound planks 16 feet long,

said Gity of Hillsboro and the remaining
one-fourth to be borne by the owner or
owners ef the lots, tracts, or parcels of
land emitting upon and adjacent to said
streets where such improvements are pro
posed to be made, and that said City Coun
cil will proceed to hear and determine ob
jections, if any, to said proposed replank
ing and improvements at the next regular
meeting to be held on Tuesday, the 8rd
dav of October. 1906. at 8.-00 o'clock P. M.
at the Council Chambers in said City of

the memory of the pioneer
and empire builder by its at
tendance.
Joe Meek was born in Wash
ington County, irgmia, in
1S10, and died m Y ashmtrton
County, Oregon, in 1875, his
remains resting m the i uala
tin Plains cemetery. He went
to St. Louis in 1S28 and ar
rived in the Rocky Mountains,
as a trapper, m 1&29. fie was
the companion of Kit Carson
and made his way through to
San Diego in the thirties.' Re
turning to the mountains, he
remained there trapping until
1839, when he left for this val
ley. In 1843 he was instrumental
in getting G. V. Ebberts, Ca
leb Wilkins and another old
trapper by the name of Mc
Kay, all of the Tualatin Plains,
to accompany him to Cham
poeg to vote in the cause of
Amt rican provisional govern
ment. He succeeded in get
ting them to go with him onlj'
after three visits to them, and
had they not accompanied him
the great domain of Oregon,
Washington and Idaho would
possibly now be British terri
tory. Joe Meek was appointed the
first United States' Marshal
by President Polk, his com
mission, signed bv two presi-
dents. Polk and Buchanan, af
terwards president, being pro-

took np a cow tlist strayed into tbe
neighborhood, and ths owner can
have same by paying charges of ad
vertising. The animal is red, with
large white spot,ander body; horns
large, turned upward ; cat in right
ear; has large bell. Tbe bovine
was fresh, and ber udder was high
ly inflamed, causing the teats to
break in several places at the sides.
Mr. Leis doctored the injuries and
has the animal in pretty . fair con
dition. Had she not been cared
for at the time she would have soon
been worthless. Anyone knowing
who owns the animal will confer a
favor by notifying the owner. Af
ter a reasonable time if tbe owner
does not appear it will be neces
sary to post notices and have the
nearest justice of tbe peace have
her appraised and sold for costs of
care. . ,

Tbe morning papers give a great
ease or rapia growth by a Uorvallis
boy, stating that this is ths only
case on record where such phenom
enal growth obtained. Dr. A. B
Bailey states that Oonld & Pyle, a
medical authority, cites many cases
of not only precocity, but of
growth, one where a boy grew six
inches in height in 15 days; anoth
er where a lad grew 44 feet in three
Jears; and still another, in ancient
istory, where a brother of the Ro
man King, Antlgonns, grew to a
man's stature at the age of seven
years, and married and raised a
