Joe Meek was born in Wash ington County, irgmia, in 1S10, and died m Y ashmtrton County, Oregon, in 1875, his remains resting m the i uala tin Plains cemetery. He went to St. Louis in 1S28 and ar rived in the Rocky Mountains, as a trapper, m 1&29. fie was the companion of Kit Carson and made his way through to San Diego in the thirties.' Re turning to the mountains, he remained there trapping until 1839, when he left for this val ley. In 1843 he was instrumental in getting G. V. Ebberts, Ca leb Wilkins and another old trapper by the name of Mc Kay, all of the Tualatin Plains, to accompany him to Cham poeg to vote in the cause of Amt rican provisional govern ment. He succeeded in get ting them to go with him onlj' after three visits to them, and had they not accompanied him the great domain of Oregon, Washington and Idaho would possibly now be British terri tory. Had she not been cared for at the time she would have soon been worthless. Anyone knowing who owns the animal will confer a favor by notifying the owner.
