HILLSBORO ARuuS, SEPT. 13, 190 Kntored at the Poet-ofAc) at Hlllaboro, i Oregon, aa aerond-flaaa mail matter. LUCIUS A. LONG, Editor. County Official Paper ; SuWription : One Poller rr Annum, j Six Months, 60 rta. ; Three Months, X5 eta. laeaetl Everjr Thursday I . -BY- WSQ McKIWRY FAILS TO SIEZB ! Washington Official Pulls in I Horns PROBABLY INSPIRED BY JEALOUSY Hillsber Urrgse Csndeiisfd Milk Coin pa ay Fights McDonald i i f State Food Commissioner E A. McDonald, of Shuttle, sent out n Deigned circulars lately, stating that he had declared the Oregon Grape brand of condensed creau), of Hilliboro, an adulterated pro duct Dr. Tamiesie went to Seatt'e to ee the official, but he kept out of the way. He then potted a re ward, and published it in the daily papers, offering 11000 to any one ahowing any adulterated sntstance injurious to health in the Oregon Grape cream. Under the law the cornmieaioner is supposed tosieie adulterated food product, but this has not been done, and doubtless will not be. , The commissioner gave as bis grounds for the circular that the ream contained annato, a coloring that is a preparation made from a South American tree, and it is used by all the cheese factories and br many dairies in the country. In fact, nearly every dairy article in the State of Washington is colored with annato, and if the commis sioner sieies the Oregon Grape cream hs will be compelled to siezs everything in the dairy market in the city of Seattle The law compels the official to piete adulterated product, hut Mc Donald fails to so act This make it look aa though his actions are in spired by a business jealousy, ss the Hillsboro people have been shipping carload after carload of cream into llu Washington mar ket, which was thought to be secure for other condensers. This jealousy extends even to Washington coun ty, and the Hillsboro people say that there are parties here who are reporting that they must shut down, owing to the action of tie n asningion official. On the contrary, the Hillsboro condenser has cream on sale every where in Seattle and Sound cities, and the commissioner ib not sies ingit and most likely will not. The state law does not prohibit col oring that is not injurious, and au thorities ajve annato the right of a? for dairy products. Dr. Tamiesie is reliable, and his offer of $1,000 reward is open to the food commissioner. Dr. Tamiesie is quoted as follows in a Seittle daily: "The fact is." says Dr. Tamieaie,"that all dairy products are slightly colored, not for adulteration, aud not with any deleterious effect upon the goods, bat imply to make them more pleasing to to the eye, and this is done because the customers insist on bavins: it so. The coloring niat'.er usually employed is an nato, which, as is stated in the United Butes Dispensatory, the official and rec ognised work on the subject, is used chiefly for coloring cheese and butter. According to the same authority anna to not only is not deleterious but it has in the past been used medicinally as a tonic. It is a preparation made from a tropical tree grown in South America, aud is the reddish pulp surrounding the seeds in the fruit of Bixa Orellana. If it use excludes one article from the market as a violation of the pure food law, the same rule most apply to all oth er articles, and the cheese sod butter people will find that they, too, must cbsnge their methods of preparing their merchandise for the market. The fsct is, however, that the use of snnato, in minute quantities, constitutes neither an adulteration nor a compound, and the courts of other states hsve so held, as will doubtless the courts of this state, When the question is fairly presented to them." The Seattle press is wondering why the commissioner select this one arti cle for exclusion and permits others to go unmolested; and why the officer does uot siei th cream but be doe noth ing but bluff.
