Issued Ktery Tharatlay -BY-LONG MckUNNKY The democratic convention ia to nominate a candidate for president today or tomorrow most likely tomorrow and the Cleveland wing ib in control of the body. While it now looks like Parker will bi nom bated, Cleveland may be sprung in the convention and hit name placed on the ticket Whether Parker or Cleveland, we shall have two National platforms appealing to the ''business interests " By this term i meant, of course, the big f-llows, and not the class that produces the class that is be tween the millstones of commer cialism. It begins to look like a personal straig'e between the ad herents of Wall street, or not un like a factional fight in Multno mah county politics. The wealth instinct of the classes will smeil from both panies.and legislation for the common good can go begging, no matter who is elected. Roose velt will have the pole, and the on ly thing which can defeat him will be New York, New Jersev and In diana. The Cleveland wing gain ed control simply because the south was tired of negro federal officia's, and they risk any and everything to beat the party in power. In this they are more to be pitied than b'anied but they are liable to lose some of their state governments before they are through with this sort of politics It is to be hoped that the sub scribers to the celebration fund will interpose no objections to spplying the $200 balance towards a perma nent pleasure ground for the use of the city and surrounding vicinity. The Sewell grove, southeast of town, could be made to answer this pur pose nicely. Public spirited citizens will subscribe to this fund, and it will not take long to raise money enough to pay for a portion of this grove, and have it fixed up, mak ing it an inviting place to pass a few hours of each summer Sunday, For public occasions like the Fourth, it could be used. It is handy to the railway track, and not too far distant from town. Washington county has a good balance in the treasury, and tire new officers elect will have no debt to embarrass them in their administration. All of the newly installed public servants are men of reliability, and if they give us as good an administration as the Union officers they need hardly feel a fear or doubt of re-election two years hence. Guglielmo, the Italian who kill ed his sweetheart in Portland a few weeks ago, has been convicted of murder in the first degree and will have to hang. There is no probability of a new trial, and the supreme court will most likely af firm the decision of the lower court, as there is no error of any magnitude in the record. County treasurer Lichlenthal, of Heppner, Morrow county, shot himself on the head with a revolver yesterday. He had been county treasurer for tbtee terms, and was recently defeated for the iourth. He left a check for $27,000 payable to the county treasurer. The of ficials think that he is not short in his accounts, and hold that humil iation over bis defeat led to the rash act.
