ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY BY The Argus Publishing Co. Sabaer'jtlom On Dollar per Annum is Months, 80 CU; Tbree Month Una, Another Northern "mob" liar burned a negro at the "take aa a fitting retribution for criminal as aault, and it is now high time for the milk and water element to talk about "law taking its courfe." Hu man nature ia human nature, and it matter not hether it be north or touth of the Mason and Dixie line, the while man will avenge criminal assault by the negro with death. It is just a question of what kind of death shall be meted out to the perpetrator, and if one's stomach is too weak to contemplate burning at the stake as a penally, then his stomach is too weak to de fend his own home from the at tacks of such vermin. The shot gun route has long pi nee censed to be much of a deterrent to such crimes, and it is either lynching or burning, and, when men with iron in their blood assume the role of avenger, they stop at neither. Even in Oregon, where the chief paper of the state has time and again assaulted lyr.ch law on such occasions, Southeastern Oregon gave a negro the halter as a penal ty. And Southeastern Oregon JiJ just exactly right NOW IS THE TIME. POPULAR NORTH BEACH. The present sale of the bankrupt stock of Gilbert Bros, offers excep tional opportunities for economical buying. Those who are planning their vaca tion this year will be interested 111 knowing that the popular excursion steamer, the T. J. Potterqueen of river boats goes into service June 27, and that she will leave Portland, during the seasrn, every day from Tuesday until Saturday inclusive. To see the beauties f "the pietur esque and mighty Columbia from the deck" of the Potter is a treat never to be forgotten. For speed and grace nothing in river or lake service in the entire West equals this side-wheeled beauty. Five hours from Portland and one from Astoria, through the famous fish ing waters of the Columbia, pa.-1 scores of salmon traps and nets and as many white winged fish boats, lands the passengers at Ilwa co, where close connection is made lor beach points with trains of the llwaco Railway A Navigation Com pany, whose cars stand on the wharf awaiting the steamer. The beach is twenty-seven miles long two hundred yards wide at low tide, and so bard tbat carriage wheels scarcely leave a mark. It is an ideal place for driving, riding. wheeling, or walking, and the surf bathing is unsurpassable. The ex cetlent hotels and boarding houses provide good accommodations, at prices ranging from one dollar to three dollars per day. The round trip rate from Port land to Astoria is $2.50; to Ocean Besch points, $4 00, good until Oc tober loth. On Saturdays, during July and August, round trip tickets are sold to beach points at $2 50. good for return, leaving the beach the following Sunday evening. The Oregon Railroad fc Naviga tion Company has just issued 1 new summer book, (free for the asking) which tells all about the delightful resorts of the Valley of the Columbia River.
