The Forest Grove Timet, thinks thai Cleveland is a synonym for democracy. Not at all. From the plaudits the Prophet receives from the republican press it is not im probable that he will head the next republican ticket with Roosevelt for second place. In that way and only in that way shall have a Cleveland administration THE CAMPAIGN. Eugene, Ore., May 18. A. E, Reames, candidate for Congress, has 1246 majority to overcome in the First District. In the June lection of 1902 V. J. Furnish, Re publican candidate for Governor carried the First District by a ma jority ovar George E Chamberlain of 124. It is not logical to compare the present campaign for Congress w'th that which was fought in 1902 be tween the late I nomas n. tongue and J. K. Weatherford, respectively republican and democratic candt dates. Mr. Weatherford is a man of highest character and strong with the voters. But he was run mng against a man woo also was of distinction, was in office, was in the midst of the most brilliant Congressional career ever ex per ienced bv a Congressman from Oregon. Mr. Hermann is not situated with respect to the voters as was Mr. Tongue. Mr. Hermann rests under dark clouds that obscure his official character, to put it charit ably, clouds that do not brighten political horizons and preesage vie torious coming days. Ralher. tliev indicate that a storm is about, to break over his head and floods destroy his political house. Furthermore, A E. Reames has passed the most searching inquiry has been subjected to most severe scrutiny, and has emerged from the ordtal with unquestioned repu tation and brilliant endorsement from the fairminded voters of the District. The present situation, therefore is like that which existed in the 1902 state campaign for Governor, excepting as to the popularitr of : Mr Cfaambvlain, which was equal -to bis fine character as a citizen and lawyer. " ANALYSIS OF THE VOTE The 1902 vote for Governor is thus analyzed, for the First Dis tnct: Furnish ....21,349 Chamberlain 20,103 Today was one of the dullest days here for many a month. The town was completely deserted ex cept a few of the home guard, who didn't care whether they mw the president or not. Thi morning at 10 a. ni neither man nor horse was teen on either ot the business streets. H. L. Locke writes from Santa Crui that he can t stand to miss a number of The Argus He sends his retards to his old G. A. R comrades. The Arsus will, in a fortnight move into the building next door south of Pope t photo gallery. Ju"t make up your mind to ce!e brate in Hillsboro thi year. "The best ever." provtmtnta of our rivers and harbor. We demand the passage of effective laws routrolliuir trusts, ami sincere efforts to enforce them. The public lands belong to the people. and any attempt to alienate said land contrary to law should be condemned at the bar of public opinion, and we there fore favor n honest administration of the Land Department as well as of all other departments. The sdminist ration of Governor George . Chamberlain, justly receiving the commendation of all people, irrespective party, and the record ol the Demo cratic party in the recent Legislature, reflect honor upon ti e partv, and will redound to the welfare of the state; we commend their earnest endeavor to cur tail public expenditures in the interest of the taxpayera. J. A. Vandehky HERMANN KEEPS IT SECRET Furnish Majority 1,246 FURNISH COUNTIES Benton, Clackamas, Coos, Curry Josephine, Klamath, Lake, Lane, Lincoln, Tillamook, Washington Yamhill Counties gave Mr. Furnish a majority of 2206. CHAMBRELAIK COUNTIES Douglas, Linn, Marion, Jackson, Polk gave Mr. Chamberlain a ma jority of 960. reames' home stronghold According to the most astute politicians in the Southern end of the First District, Keames will carry the First Judicial District, comprising Jackson, Josephine, Lake and Klamath Counfes, b more than 1000 majority over Hermann, lo place it at only 1000 is to assume a most conserva live attitude, for close figures who know the ground in many instances name 1500 to 1800 as the correct ' estimate. these counties gavb furnish 270 MAJORITY OVER CHAMBERLAIN To carry them with 1000, Reames will have wiped out the Famish majority, and have 24 votes to the good, II the remainder of the Dig trict be as it was in 1902. But, Washington, Clackamas, Yamhill which went for Furnish heavily, will beyond much doubt not give Hermann heartiest sup port. Presume them to be a "standoff" and the 753 majority - they gave Furnish will be sub tracted from the Reames opposi tion to make up for possible losses everywhere Hermann's normal strength, which he should inherit from the from the Furnish vote, crumbles to pieces in all of the remaining Counties of the District. In Lane, Benton and many other counties he has lost from the votes that were cast for Furnish, until Reames election seems to be practically as sured. ADVICES ARE FAVORABLE At (he Reames Headquarters here, advices are received from workers in all parts of the Dis trict. These advices have been .tabulated, and it is found that, af ter taking the figures on their face, and discounting them most liber ally, a majority for Reames remains. Last week for a day or two came the critical time. - It passed with the flood still running in favor of Reames, as it has been from the beginning. With Hermann upon the defensive, a weak position for any candidate, he loses constantly. Confidence in the outcome is ex praised at the Reames Headquar ters. Returns justify that con- Ziwtm. I The statement that comes from Washington concerning the order stopping further surveys of land in Oregon is: Washington, D. C May 15. The Commissioner of the Genera Land Office has decided that there shall be no further surveys of pub lie lands in Oregon this year. The fradulent taking of lands by alleged settlers for tee benebt of corpora tions and syndicates is the cause This decision of the General Land Office grows out of the frauds prac ticed and exposed daring the Her mann administration of the lan affairs and which brought about Hermann a removal. "It is regretted at the Depart ment here that the innocent are compelled to suffer with the guilty tor many persons in good faith have gone upon 160 acres of un surveyed lands intending to make bona fide homes and fulfill the provisions of the law. "Bui. owing to the course pur sued by the former Land (Jommi sioner, and the necessity of going to the bottom of the matter, it louna to De necessary to cease working surveying the lands, which will bedeferrel to a time so die tant that great hardship will be wrought upon the working peopl who have gone into Uregon an begun to build homes. GREEN'S REPORT INACCESSIBLE 'The special report of A ureen, appointed to examine into the fact?, is on file with the De partment as a confidential docu meat. It is the custom of the De partment, in cases wherein three re ports are accusatory of any official or reflect in any manner upon his integrity or efficiency, to mark 'confidential' and retain them from the public. This has been done with Green's report, and only through the consent of the Her mann people could it be released for publication. "Efforts have been made to se cure it, bu. they I ave failed. A request from the Hermann neonle of Oregon would operate to remove the baa of secrecy, so it is believed here, indeed a hint was thrown out in a manner to indicate that such a request would end all difficulty in getting at a leport that seems to be largely the crux of the whole question.'' The Democratic party of the First Con gressional District of the State of Oregon, in convention assembled, reaffirms al legiance to the time-honored principles of government as promulgated by TboM Jefferson. We are unalterably opposed to the present trnst dictation of our finan cial and tariff legislation, especially as exemplified by. the Aldricb and Fowler bills now pending before Con gress, and declare such eontrol as subversive of good goverment. There is an overwhelming demand from a vast majority of the people for a revision of the tariff along rational line.
