FII.TON? For a good many years Hon. Chas. Fulton has len connected with the S ate' Senate. Aside from that legislation which was of class na ture, such as fishing laws, and which looked toward votes for po litical furtherance in his own coun ty, what has he done? Where if any constructive legislation of which he is the author which had for its basis a proposed benefit at large lo the tax payers of Oregon? Will some one please rise and sta'e it? s As a matter of fact this is not a democratic fight, and the Argus knows that Mr. Ful'on has many supporters among Washington county repuDiicans. cut one is constrained, nevertheless, to con sider the fitness of public officials If it had not been that Fulton was connected with politics of the pea nut nature he would have long since had a political death from his inane service. His sta'esman- . ship is not of the constructive or der. He simply has been for the r best interests of Fulton. He is the author of no law that had for its ultimate the public weal. He can be best designated as a precinct statesman, and that precinct the fishing groundsill the lower Colum bia. He, has . never known solid ground on great public questions. On the money question lie was first a silverite, and theniiext what the "party" said' he should be. Even had Mr. Fulton constructive quali 1ies, this ical to be with bis party ori this great question would nomi nate him as an opportunist. He staid with his party, against his own. public utterances because he hoped the "party" would some day send him to Washington. Will Oregon do herself credit to send such a man to the senate? Does Oregon desire an opportunist there? Then send Fulton! But if the state desires a man who is a con tractive statesman; one who is not afraid of the voice of the people as Mr. Fulton was last spring, when "he objected to his name going on the republican ballot as senatorial candidate; lot it leave Mr. Fulton at home. . Oregon is entitled to a senator, .who" can conceive some thing not a mere party follower. And, furthermore, it should have a man at Washington who is not likely to switch on great public questions. Moreover, a iolitician who is afraid of the Mays' law isn't entitled to public consideration. CLASSES AXD Cl.AS.SEH. A country newspaper is generally . looked upon as a poor dissemina - .. tor of thought, and a poor mentor in political affairs. Of limes this is true in the main. But today it behoves the country newspaper to take up economic questions as nev- er before. It lays at the door of the country newspaper to make public the fact that, as much as we' deplore the situation, there are . classes and clas legislation. When ever you hear a would-be saee tell ing someone that "class should not be arrayed against class," you mav depend that he is either ignorant ol the. question, or prejudiced against the people in the lower WMkT of life the farmer, the la 'borer, the artisan, and his fellows, Who is there, as a matter of fact , nt recognizing the lac that finan cial trusts of the country the . lwji:.;,f coal, manufacturing, banka, etc. are not dictating the National laws? Who? None save the man who does not study, ".. those who are interested in t trusts, or those whose political wel fare, as a personal matter, seems to hinge upon the welfare of the trust party! The big corporations as sume that they are the Nation and, so far as legislation goes, are tley not? They are already in control of nine-tenths of the rerjub- l!:m daily press, and all of the big alleged democratic pre save the Hearst papers and who dUumtoe this? It has become a matter of class. It is the trusts and the trust principle against all other classes. The parting of the ways must come before Ions. The Na tion cannot stand for trust pilfer ing much longer. It is rapidly becoming purely a class question, and farmers cannot always remain blind to so patent a fact. For this reason country newspapers must go into these questions, and discuss them, it even feeblv. Since the president is so eager to give the people of the South negro postmasters; and since that he is supported by our Northern party press in this, the wonder that he doesn't give the North a taste of this business, continues to intrude into the editorial cocoa-nut. Just for instance, how would the ediior of the New Age, the "Afroh-Amer ican organ of Portland's Parktown look as Portland's stamp seller. And just think what a feature he would have been during the Lewis & Clark Fair, advertised as a descendant of York. Mrs. Dye's Ethiopian of Lewis & Clark fame The criminal clause of the Sher man Law is taking a very lengthy vacation. And, by the way, Phil ander Knox doesn't seem to be urg ing its return to Washington. - Real Estate Transfer.
