A MATTER OF PLEASURE.
That Eugene Loud, of San Xte,
Cl., has been defeated for Con
. grees, is a matter of much pleasure
to those country newspaper men
who have watched that Congress
man's policies in the lower House.
Loud has always worked against
the country newspaper not be
cause he despised them, bnt because
he was working for the big news
ag-ncie. Every thing he could do
against the country publisher was
- his forte. Petition after petition at
each session of Congress has found
way to Washington, asking mem
bers of Congress to look out for
Loud and his various bills against
. the country newspaper. Loud lived
in a district where the country
newspaper was overshadowed by
the bigger papers and he was not
fearing the weekly paper. His tie-
feat is sufficient balm to many a
country publisher who is dissatis
fied with ths way elections went in
North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
The suicide of C. A. Pitch, once
editor of the Oregon City Herald,
at Lakeview, Oregon, came as a
surprise to those who knew him
Filch was much of an optimist as
people knew him, but underneath
there must have been a morbid
strain in his nature. He leave a
wife and two children. Fitch was
a forceful writer and an effectiv
speaker. His last act was the only
cowardly one against his record.
Secretary Shaw Bays that the
law requires national banks in re
- serve cities to keep 25 per cent of
their deposits on hand, but he in
sists that the secretary can exer
cise discretion in the enforcement
of the law, and in his discretion he
has decided not to enforce it. The
president seems to feel the same
way about the criminal part of the
anti-trust law. The administra
tion seems to be more strenuouB on
on the stump than in the attorney
general's office. Ex.
- Coi.eb made a phenomenal run
in Greater New York, but the vote
in the state outside shows that the
- people at large had no faith in the
. Hill ticket. Where Coler was
known there he received the largest
vote Coler voted for Bryan and
had the indorsement of all factions
of the party in the city. Had Hill
kept out of the New York fight it
would have made very little differ
ence m .New York city and might
; have made enough difference in
the country to have elected Coler.
Odell receives over 12,000 plurality
Julius Kah.v, the author, or sup
posed to be one of the authors, of
,: the Mitchell-Kahn exclusion bill
has been defeated by Edward J
Livernash, Union-Labor and Dem
ocratic candidate for Congress in a
ban Francisco district. Kahn was
; originally for rigid exclusion, but
, upon petitions from the wholesale
district asking for a less rigid bill
he "laid down" and now he gets
his reward. Here will be another
chance for those papers who call
union labor "slave labor" to expat-
late upon the evils of trades
unionism.
, .v, a. Hill is reminded that
"'tliere are others than Mr. Bryan
who lose elections. And, further
he will find that no matter how
-much people may want relief from
present conditions they will hardly
go to the gentleman from Chemung
county for advice as to statesman
ship.
Notwithstanding the fact that
Rofsevdt and all h;s cabinet were
out campaigning for the Republi
can ticket the opposition made no
material losses taking the results
a- fo'ind Nationally. This h not a
very strong recommendation con
sidering that where the re-organ- i
ir r In the Democratic parly won
t the real Deumcra's fought them
and where the real lVmoerats had !
control the re-orgmuers voted the
Republican ticket. Taken as a
whole, on the popular vote, the ad
ministration has lost as compared
to the vote of the last election.
Tiik Oregonian has Roosevelt on
the brain. This is bad for Teddy as
an angel never gets just deserts,
and the slaver daily gushed over
the president '"since Scott left home
would make King Dodo Mush.
Wm. R. Hearst, of the San Fran
cisco Examiner, the New Yrk
Journal and Chicago American,
has been sent to Congress front one
of the New York districts. Tlii is
an innovation, as very seldom a
millionaire is sent to the House of
Representatives. Hearst is one of
the few young rich men who hits
"kept busy" all his life, and he has
earned the distinguished honor.
There is no good reason why all
can't be pleased over the elections
The Bryan men can be pleased that
the straddling Boies men in Iowa
were scooped worse than ever; that
Ta;gart's straddlers in Indiana
were defeated by bigger majorities
than ever; the re-organizers can be
pleased that the Bryan men lost
what the Oregonian calls a "few
rotton mining boroughs" in the
west, and the Roosevelt Republi
cans can feel pleased that they
haven't lost the whole darned
shoo ing match.
