Staver. He was out to this place,
Monday, greeting Ins friends.
Milton Stingley, of Reedville,
who had a farm back of the Palma
teer place, died last Friday evening,
aged about 70. He leaves a wife
and three children. The funeral
took place Saturday in the Hilla
boro cemetery.
Rev. and Mrs. W, D. Ewing, for
some years residents of this city,
have purchased property at Uni
versity rark, and have moved
there to reside. Mr. Ewing is an
old-time and pioneer minister, and
came to Washington county in the
fifties.

Forest Grove, was brought to the
city Monday, and examined by
Dr. W, D. Wood on fceing charged

Kansas or Nebraska, and his ail
ment seems to lie of religious ex
cess. Sheriff Sewell and T. K.
Weatherred conveyed him to Salem
Tuesday morning.

Silaa Bennett, well known here for
many years, having been a resident
north of this city, two miles, for a
a long time, met death in I'ortland
last Friday night, about five. Ben
nett was working for Lind A Man
ning, street contractors, and bad
been engaged in loading wagons in
a pit, and had started out with the
last load. While attempting to go
across a bridge on Corbett street,
the structure fell, carrying with it
the team and Mr. Bennett, the man
who was driving making his escape

parents of Bennett have resided in
I'ortland for a number of years. It
s thought that the city of Portland
will be held for damages for the
benefit of Bennett's minor heirs.
The funeral occurred Sunday at
Portland, interment being in the
Lone Fir cemetery.

Joseph Q. Dillery, aged 58 years,
and for some years a sawmill man
of Reedville, died near Beaverton,
October 12, and his remains were
buried at the Greenwood cemetery,
roriiana, luesuay. Dillery was
well known in central Washington
county, and he will be remembered
as having been a party to a law
suit over a team of horses; the case
going to the supreme court and
back two times, Dillery finally los
ing the case. lie was formerly a
sawmill roan in the days of lumber
glory in that state.

Hoyt, who was elected Major of the
First Battallion, First Regiment.
Portland No. 2 gave the visiting
Kank a splendid banquet. The pa
rade waa one of the finest ever seen
in Portland.
Founders' Day waa observed at
Pacific University yesterday, and
Hon. W. N. Barrett, of ihif city,
delivered the ''Founders' Day Ad
dress." W. O. Hale, of this city,
represented the Alpha Zeta Society,
at the exercise, and Mie Minnie
Heidel, of Hilloboro also, gave an
impersonation as "Mary, Queen of
the Scots." Victor Emmel, of
Scbolls, gave a review of the ath
letic work and its relation to the
institution. Fred Vrootnan was
heartily encored in the rendition of
a solo, -The Red, Red Rose." Mr.
Barrett, the speaker of the day, is a
gradjate of Pacific University, '79,
and still has a warm feeling for the
University.

new mill will manufacture rough
and dressed lumber and will have
the latest improved machinery,

John Blum, for over twenty vearB

neighborhood, died near Gaston,
last Saturday evening. Deceased
leaves four sons, Sterling, Basil,
Edward and William, and two
daughters, Mrs. Joseph Thomas
and Mrs. John McLeond, all resid
ing at or near Gaston.
H. G. Starkweather, representing
the Oregonian and a mail box con
cern, was in the city Saturday eve
ning, and went out into the coun
try the first of the week to see if he
could place some of the boxes along
the mail routes.
