Hanna THE GOV EKN O USH 1 1. All day long reports have been eon tradittory as to whether it is Gov ernot Chamberlain or Governor Furnish.,-JSaph party headqnar! era at Portland claims the election and H is the closest contest ever witnessed in the state, Mr. Cham beriain .feels confident that he is Sufficiently ahead to assure htui the election. It is apparently very close. ' ' Just before noon the re- pork was ; circulated here that Furnish had crawled a few votes ahead and there was much jublia tion by the Furnish people. About two o'clock another report came that Chamberlain was enough ahead that the Oregonian conced ed his election. As to Matt he wo. the state republican chairman, he will not concede the election until the official count is in, and there the matter stands. Thousands of Republicans over the state voted for Cbamberlai rather than for Furnish. . Wb.il much of )his is charged to the Geer-Simon bolt, yet the real tie cisive vote that went to him came from Republicans who really lieved in Chamberlain and that he was a much better man for Ore gon's executive than Furnish. In this county there were many such votes, and all over the state this was the case. It was inevitable that Furnish wou'd go behind, be cause he was a politician, not a statesman. No ona ever, heard of him, except as a politician, until his banking status gave him the nomination. You can tool some of the people for year, but you can't fool them every year pir ticularly, Oregon's people! Forest Geove, in the death of Grandma Sloan, loses a character long identified with the history of a historic town'. Perhaps no worn an in the Northwest, with th ex ception of Grandma Munra, of Bonneville and Meacham fame, was so well known to the travelling Northwest as this estimable wom an, Mrs. Sloan. There are hund reds of travelling men knights of the grip and hundreds of travel lers in the Northwest, besides, hundreds in Washington county, who will miss this kindly soul from bar usual place in the hostelry at Forest Grove and many of the "boys", as she dialled her guests, will feel as though one of their dearest friends had passed to the beyond. From all appearances, the state Eas given the Initiative and Refer enduni amend men t a suflicienl majority to make it a part of our constitution. This is cheering (n '. the face of the fact that few hut the Democratic and populist papers were aupporting it with any di dree of earnestness. It in a god thing tb have a check on class leg islation and the measure becoming organic law will tend to purer leg islation and a healthier condition instate affairs. Thu Fultonsarid the Brownells will have a harder time than in the past. You can depend on Oregon doing the right thing if you will just gijie the state a chance. Furnish lost Umatilla county by three hundred voteA. This wa Furnish's home, and it is eignifi oant that where he was the best known there he found his weakest support. Tb county has been wpublicah since 1898 The best i of a man's worth is the vote of lit home county and when a man m a ticket of a party in the ma-. brity, loaes, there is something rrong. It is useless to charge it to wkmu or fcuvy ... Thai iaiht nf r. tiw TOtes, but it seldom af- Oheo.v never before had eo close an election on the office of governor. At 5 P. M. Chamberlain is 335 head with returns practically all It is Gov. Chamberlain. Thk two Hillsboro precincts were majority for Union, and thtt is considerable satisfaction where the supporters of both parties and the candidates of both rartie. were well known. there t no place like home! Ccb. has been given hr iivl pendence and her wish of hundred of years has been realized. Now if Cuba shall bo wise sha will ap ply for admission as a territory a did Xx after that territory hts wrested her independence from Mexico. IIii.i.stsoRo's two precincts did nobly for the lnin ticket and we're ail prou of the har.itaome support received at the county seat, north and south. Here 1 was where better than elsewhere the respective candidates and thei supporters were known and here is where their cause was not for gotten Ik Chamberlain is elected the United States will not give up the Philippines until we are ready The Argus predicts, however, that it will not be many years until th Philippines will get their liberty just m Cuba has hoisted her fiSg. The American flig has been "pulled down" in Cuba and the country has not gone to the had. Some tunes partisans make themselves very ridiculous over these things Thk Boer war is ended and th Transvaal is again to be quiet where for several years has waged a war seldom equalled in history The English government is signed to provide funds to re-slock the Boer farms, to pay ior the cost the war, and to grant a government which will be practical indtpend enc9 so far as home affairs are con cerned. The British army is to b withdrawn. The trip to Salt River this month of June will ba a Union af fair in every respect. Candidate from both sides will make the trip and to keep from being lonesome it should be a consolation party There is no sociability in the de faated candidates of both parliet making the journey alone and one launch will answer the purposes ol all. The defeated candidates who were en the Union ticket, start at once to be done with theexcursion H1LI.SB0110 is all right. Tim two precincts d'd nobly for Chamber lain, carrying one by 10 and the other, south, bw 35! The town al so did finely for the ntire Union licket with one or two exceptions Here was the storm center and where all the various phases of the campaign were freelv discussed Columbia also went above expecta lions. Bean, the Republican su preme judge, gets over 500 in the county. The Unionists should not complain The return (,f. Sheriff Sewell, Clerk Morgan and County Judge Rood for another term is a tribute to the judgment of the people of V ashing'.on county. This is a re publican county by over .500, and it is a good thing to know that parly lint s are not closely drawn where merit is involved. These oflicers have satisfied thi people ihiit their labors have been con scientioua and the party whip could not keep votes from them when the citizen was in his booth It is not too little to say that had republi cans been eieoted in their Btead that tjey might have given equal ly as good satisfaction as these of ficers but it is up to us all to ad- rait that the county has exhibited a splendid spirit of fairness.
