Last week' Independent, edited bv the "bosses," contained about two columns of rot, the gist of which was assault upon The Argus. The Boss contends that it is all right to "flop," and holds men like Hare, Sewell and others as 'Hoppers.'' Let us see. Every man who knows anything of public affairs in this county knows that Mr. Hare and Mr. Sewell went from a majority party to a minority pirtv; every one knows that they had supported the majority party until it no longer held to the bimetallic plunk; then left it to go to one which con tained a bimetallic plank, similar to the one the majority party had carried for years. This, then, is the way they flopped.' They merely . remained true to their convictions. On the other hand, Mr. Furnish ' left the minority party to go to a - majority party, and that, after he bad supported a party which had aicjpted silver plank after silver fXjnd after he had used the e-MMOTMM UarlV to -IUUK6 Lit wealth umler the old fee t ystem. Hundreds of repul licans will tell you that Furnish praetic-iily gain ed bis nomination bv the use of hoodie; they will tell you that Mr. Furnish never nude a business success of any private business, until after he had made bis thou sands out of oflicial life. In com pany with John L Sperry.of Uma tilla, young Furnish encased in the commisslo i business. The experi ment was a failure. He then was successively deputy U. S marhel and sheriff of Umatilla county, and here is where be made his thou sands, getting the Mart with which he bought the assets of lh bank w hich be now conducts. He Work ed the "wlib-key-to Indians'" racket to a farewell. That is where he made money. He had office as -heriff under the old fee system, i:d that is where he made his money, i'hat he spent thousands of dollars to get his nomination, is the prevailing idea. Hundreds ff republicans in his own territory are fighting him a a dangerous man to elect. On the other hand, Cham berlain has held office in Linn and in Multnomah counties. He has been faithful to his trust. He is not a rich man and for this rea son he is to be beaten if we accept the Scott-Carey combine for author ity. Chamberlain it a plain man of the people and he has never for gotten his friends. He is a true blu, a scholar, and a gentleman No" mark of corruption has ever tainted hh official career, and he is a man generally beloved for his sterling qualities. He has splen did executive ability. For his manliness and his unspotted career thousands of republicans will vote for him rather than for Furnish wtio it is sua, will have a desperate struggle to carry his own county, 1'he peooTe of Washington countv . . c are an intelligent community, it is a mark ol rare discernment to hear manv heretofore reniihlic.ma say that they are going to vote for a ciean nun io nandle attairs in the governor's chair for four years, wishes will more than likely pre- vail, indeed, there is hot, lin.ln doubt that Geo. E. Chamberlain will be our next governor. It is said that Mr. Huston has an ulterior motive in striving to elect his ticket. He is said to he very desirous of having the ''ha-ha" on the p ipulists who would not support him for the state senate in 1890. His eggs may not hatch un til after they are addled and he may not succeed in his desire to take a delegation to Salem! Thk Argus asks every reader to vote for the direct legislation amendment. It.will give the peo ple power of making laws, and the power to repeal obnoxious laws. Do not miss this opportunity to vote for this measure. If the amendment be defeated.it will be years before you will again cet an opportunity : to vote yourself into p-wer. Direct legislation will mean the more power for you Do you not want all the powernosi-ible power that is rightfully yours? Why let the politicians give vou law?
