The Commoner' seems to be giving the administration much anxiety, and the poetai department hae made a ruling that sample copies can not be sent out, even if paid for, because The Commoner, the department says, is "advertising theory." This is indeed, rich, and even the Oregonian, whose editor in-chief has always hated Brvan for his worth and brains, says: "It is a remarkable and not pre possessing ruling made by the Post Office Department that Brvan Commoner is advertising, if not of merchandise, at least of a "theory or "doctrine." This far-fetched ar gument is wide of the question and conceived in asininity. Free copies of newspapers are not mailable ur der the law at second-class pound rates. The law is enforced impartially upon the Oregonian and all other newspapers. The pound rate is prescribed for regular subscriptions only. There is no reason why Bryan's paper should be made an exoeption to the rule, And still congress fools with the canal proposition. It begins to look, more than ever, that TheAr gus was right when it stated that it would be doubtful if anything j i . .. . were uuuo aiong uua line inis ses sion of the National legislature. Ihk little cold snap that has been hovering over the Northwest , for a week, when mercurv reached but twelve above zero, is nothing aa compared with the Mississippi states, where it frequently, in the .North, goes forty and fifty below Oregonians have seen the coldest spell for some yean, and they re gret its appearance. But it has been good for fruit; good for grain 1 . 1 n . . uu muse easterners wno are . spending their first winter here think that if this is the worst they will meet, that Oregon has a ell mate that is the finest anywhere. And it has. When Joe Simon was doing nas ty work for H. W. Corbett, it will ba remembered that his every ac tion tacitly received the endorse ment of the Corbett press, all over Oregon. Now, however, that some of the more influential papers are after Joe's scalp, they think a repe tition of Joe's unholy work is bad bad medicine. Joe is no worse now than when he was putting up machine to support his banker friend, Mr. Corbett. He is just as good, and just as bad ; "no better nor no worse. That he should be eliminated from Oregon's politics, "o wuu mows eiiner nim or his methods, disputes -but it is ridiculous to see his old-time jour nalistic supporters after him on the grounds of "dirty politics." Ob. Sayi-ob, of Sherwood, who recently was a candidate for city honors and who received a total of six votes, takes exception to notice which appeared in a recent number of The Argus, and uses a half column in the Independent to unburden himself. Dear Doctor, if your phyic is one-half as lament able as your use of the English . language, the good people of Sher wood are in sad need of sympathy. As to the Doctor's charge of "politi cal jobbery and trickery" The Argus knows nothing. The Doctor was on the tail end of the Corbett ticket last year and it is surmised that the defeat he received has turned his pneumo-gostrio nerve awry. And, as a finale, when The Argus wants advice, he will apply to some one who can give it in plain English. It isn't much wonder that the dear people of Sherwood gave him but six of their votes Abuse The Argus all you wish, Doctor; you may enjoy it : and it rH not hurt the religious journal. The Argus is accustomed to abuse. Bat, for the sake of the nag, our public schools and the man who invented the Anglo-Sax on language, write in that mode o fi V ......... C . 1 1 . . . iMrauru. auu uun t pive us Volapuk. Tho Argus can't afford to have a controversy with a man who says he has never seen The Argusaud then contradicts him eeu oeiore ue closes the sentence containing the sUtement. Concerning Hon. Vm. J. Bry an's tour through the East, the Boston Post says; "A most pleas ing impression is created by the visit of the Hon. William J. Bryan to Aew Kngund. There is no pos sible political significance attach' ing to his tour; all that is elimi nated, and the publio which has known him heretofore as a fiery party orator, biasing like a meteor through a hot campaign, now makes the acquaintance of an ami able philosopher and high-thinking citizen of the republic who teaches the civic virtues in fascinating dis course. The addresses which Mr. Bryan has delivered in several of the principal cities are in many respects models of oratory." It is not ofteu in this day that anybody says advertising does not pay. Some forms of publicity are too expensive for the results they bring; but without some publicity nobody but the burglar can suc ceed. The fact that a man has a Bign over his door is proof that he thinks advertising pays. The news paper is a medium which a man can use according to his means or desire, and if the best paper for the purpose be selected it will pay ac cording to the space used. Ex. In Washington county this means The Argus. Those little misunderstandings in South America have disappeared almost as rapidly as thev cam. Ihe Chile-Argentine affair ended as soon as the newspaper correspond ents ran out of "hot air" material for sensational news perhaps the cool winds blowing over the Andes were too frigid to sustain such trop ically atmospheric ideas, and in Paraguay the country was made safe for at least a week by the kill ing of a senator and the wounding of three others. Mr. Paul Oakerman.of Reedville. who is attending the Farmer's Short Course at the Corvallis Agri cultural College, writes as follows of that Session: There are now about twenty students. consisting mostly of young men, at tending the Short Course, but there are attending, men who are over three score and women, middle-aged, who take deep interest in the discussions and lectures. After these lectures, we are permitted to ask questions, which brings vm. our.uiug Biuucnis wian to snow. We have five of these tectum dniu The first week we had practical work in butter-making, which consisted in learn ing the separator, to put it ud. to et h speed required; taking down; washing; ouu gciiiuK mieniptrature 01 the milk to be separated; how to test milk, cream and butter milk. This is lecture No. 1 by Prof. Kent. The second is lecture No. 2. bv Pmf Knisely, which treatson chemical terms, the chemical elements, and those im portant to agriculture. The third is by Dr. Withycombe (formerly of South Tualatin, our county) and treats on the principles or digestion, problems in feeding, balanced rations ami diptio li eases of farm animals. The fourth is by Prof. Cordley and teaches the experi ence of man with the insect world, methods of insect warfare and the story of the wormy apple. The fifth is by Prof. Lake, treating of plants as the farmer sees them, the work of plants and how to direct it t,A essentials of seeding and planting from me plant's point of view. The second week folln'wa nn thu n of work in the different branches, except " Biuuics, mncn is supple mented by a study in bacterial diseases in domestic animals and how to prevent them. This is a verv important uu and is conducted by Prof. Pernot, State Bacteriologist. For example, last week the lungs of a pig were sent here to be exainmea through a microscope which magnifies 2,300 times. By this weans many of the germs could be seen. Rut to ne sure ot the causes of death, these germs are inoculated in a euinea niir (kept here for the purpose) and if it be a fatal disease, the irerm will kill th. guinea in 24 nouro after inoculation. In this particular case the iruinc .iu,i in twelve hours, and then, by dissecting, it wns found that the germ which was laiai was mat taken from the swine.
