Ir the Isthmian cansl shall pass both houses of Congress this ses sion it will be a surprise to the many who hare watched National legislation on this great proposed water way for years. Tactics of delay are already being furthered at the threshold of tbe Senate, and when the measure gets back to the House it will not be known by its friends. It is really very funny, and quit in the comio opera line in one aspect of it: "Capt Chadwick, of the New York, gets $14,025 in prize money as the result of the naval battle of Santiago, although his craft did not fire a shot and was nearly ten miles away at the time of the surrender of the last ship in the Spanish fleet. His share ia nearly one hundred times more than that of Admiral Schley, wbo has been awarded $149. Ore gon City Herald. Arthur H. Noyea, the Alaska J udge who made himself so obnox ious by his contemptible decisions against beach miners in Nome has been fined $1000 for contempt of Court Noyea was the tool of the bin mining ring that appeared to have the sanction of tbe former administration in its nefarious reign at Nome. Evidently the money behind this thieving com pany, of which Noyea was the tool, contributed of its opulence to keep Noyea from going behind the bars where he belongs. Oregon Inde pendent. When the campaign advances the Oregonian will forget all about the injustice we are doing to the Philippines in the matter of tariff, and all about, the injustice of the trusts, and the1 robbery of tbe trust barons, and get in and howl for the only blue blooded party in exis tence. It's easy to back-back. It was very easy for the papers to gig and bolt down the anti-expansion ideas after Mr. Hanna had de dared them to be improper, and it will be as easy for the kickers to getback into line on the matters of trust and Philippine injustice. Things are getting interesting in Multnomah county for Senator Simon. The commissioners' court of that county recently appointed the judges and clerks of elections. and the Oregonian contends that . they an all members of the Simon machine, excepting those who were sandwiched in where tbey would do no harm. As a matter of fact, there are many on that list who have been judges and clerks of elec tion in the past, and who then war counted as the most iatelli gent and honorable citizens of the county. They then belonged to no machine bnt of a sudden, change comes over the spirit of tbe dream and they become "machine men." Well, What of it? A ma chine man is just as virtuous now as a year 0? so ago, is he not? Whose ox is getting gored? Whose ambition is getting bagged in the kneoB? Will "not these men count aa honorably in the future as they did in the past, when gun-plays were made by their masters in the interest of "decent" politics? Go to, kickers! Simon and his politics are rotten enough, God knows, but "Father of Abraham," give the Jew his just deserts. He is no bet ter nor no worse than when he was a little tin god and led the "only honorable men" in Multnomah ' county to defeat and victory. Every few years our friend, Hon. H. W. Scott, is mentioned as a United States' senatorial possi bility. Mr. Scott would make an excellent senator only for the facta that he is a monomaniac on the money question, standing al ways for the debasement of product; a procurer for bank rag money trfMla: a tiddler on tariff, being be- ttrixt and between and never right, eutirelv; palterer on the tru?t; question, yet standing in will) trust when it comes along election time. But for tbeee few little iJio syncracie, The Argus would hum bly support Mr. Scott for United Stat' seuator. Aud for these uu righteous characteristic lie s (o be denied the support of thU religious journal and be is also wrong, by the way, on the prohibition ques tion. We humbly submit that Scott ia not acceptable' to The Ar gus. Personally, he is a Dice gen tleman; politically, heSs the great est and most unmitigated flirt iu the Oregon political arena. We all remember how he flirted with the imperial idea, only to favor Philip pine retention when forced by the bosses. Gov. Gcer U having plenty of com pany these days. Every little politician from Baker to Ashland ta out after the nomination that should go to Geer as a matter of party usage. The tall syca more of tbe Waldo hills may have to go back to his farm, after all, before he has had the honors of the office two terms. Oregon will give the beat exhibition in 1905 that has ever been shown to people of the United Slates. The Northwest has abundant resources and can exhibit anything, and of the best, from a gold mine down to fruits of the minor order. Senator Simon ia to return to Portland and take part in the primaries.- This means that the Hon. Joseph is ia trouble and that he feels that he has 'a hard fight to make now that the big daily has deserted him. Bat why has it de serted him? One of the leading gypsies, of the camp south of town, had an alter cation in the livery barn last night with E. B. Sappington. It seems that the gypsy went there to pro cure a team to have himself taken home. He was loaded with booze and Sappington refused to hitch up a team. Blows were exchanged and the man finally put out of the barn. Later on he was arrested and placed in jail over night. He had his trial before Justice Everitt this afternoon. After hearing the evidence, Judge Everitt concluded that the defendant was guilty and imposed a fine of ten dollars and cost. In default of the fine ' the prisoner was committed to the county jail to serve out the appraisement. i . is. . t, r, tN rv, i tt ti A GENUINE CLEARANCE SALE ! a In order tn moke room for our Magnificent Spring Slock we are iniu.gura.ting a Clearance Sale to continue 'ral weeks.
