(la Trapper's Costnmel Oiioatd to Gold Mono metallism. Be Uera la the Bimetallic Standard, Dear Mom; aeaas Debased Property ad Profitless Americas Product. Our Coasofscat loss is our Creditors' Gain Has ao ase for Marcus A. Hanna 8IMPLK MA.TTEK UK BUSIXKSS. All Washington county is natural ly interested in the growth of Tort land, for that city is 'our market. Perhaps no county in tlte state ao much solicitous of her welfare, We have here a county rich in re sources, and the more Portland shall grow the better market the city will afford lor our creamery and farm products. But popula tion will not ootne to Portland un loss that citv bestir herself. Port land wants manufacturing institu tions and railroads leading into the coal 6e!ds. The Xehalern coal fields can furnish fuel for Portland cheap, but utiles there is some thing done, and that quickly, Ta cow will be the winner. The Northern Pacific is heading that way, and it will build the road perhaps, even if' Portland shall build. The business men of Port land must begin to consider the possibilities of expansion at home If Portland is to bold her greatness her oititens must take opportunity by the forelock. The days of send iug oat a dollar to return within a year with another dollar are gone and gone forever unless one has ' money enough to get into a trust. Portland can make no better in vestment loan to put money into the Nehalem road. There is more wealth in the city of Portland proportion to her population, to day, than in any of her opposition trade centers. Portland has the money. Will she use it? That is the great question. It if only matter of business. JVHT A TRIFLE, DON'T KICK For the laat year or two the Pacific coast has been the hotbed of small pox, in rather a mild form, to be ure, bat sometimes fatal When the pesky little germ gets acclim . ated for he comes from the Phil- ippinea be will wax fat and feed on corpuscles with a vengeance. Here we have one of the attractions expansion. The next thing we ahall have as a result of benevolent assimilation will be the leprosy and then we shall be strictly in it. But what matters if we do have a lot of noseless and lipless citizens here on the coast so long as ex pansion furnishes fat army steals and big gobs of officialdom. Go to kickers, and if you get the small pox or leprosy remember it is for the glory of your country and the edification of Marcus A. Hanna, the only living and sacrificing pa triot of the new century'. Soke of our administration pa pera are jeering at the opposition because Mark Hanna is not to ac company Mr. McKinley on his western tour. Do they suppose that Mr. Hanna has not sufficient control over his servant that he cannot allow him a month's rest, particularly when he Is away from Washington? Besides, why not look at things in the right light? Perhaps Mr. Hanna is staying in Washington to see that the departments conduct things in sympathy with the trusts and cor porations during the presidential jnnket. Now that Corbet) is to have a fair in 1905, he will be able to re coup his senatorial expenditures into the didn't-get-there-rat-hole by increase of his rentals along the line of his famous rows of White chapel habitations. No one has ever questioned Mr. Corbett's busi ness ability exoept the man who got away with $1500 at Salem last winter, ! JlillHf ! CONTEST NOTICE. !
