Be Hem la the Bimetallic Standard. Dear Monej aeas Debased Property, ad Profitless American Product. Our Consequent loss is our Creditors' Gaio. Bis eo am for Marcos A. Hanna THE INCIDENT CLOSKI). Hon. John H. Mitchell has been elected to the United States Senate by the aid of democratic and pop uhst votes. This may be. and it may not be, good plitien. That is neither here nor there, lie is elected. . There wan imminent dan ger of a deadlk. and as it was, it came near being that way. With out the (icaavrntic and populist vote if was a deadlock, or Corbett. We do not think the man Corliett oould have been elected, therefore. The Arovs feels disposed to, and does, endorse those votes which tave Oregon a senator, one that will make a much better represen tative, all things considered, than Mr. Cor bell. It takes a great deal of nerve to vote for a republican in such cases, but there are times when parlianship ceases to be virtue. As to the future of the democratic party in the state, and the bearing their euding the dead lock will have as to success or de feat, that is a matter of mere spec nlation. We all remember how re publicans voted for Neemith when the democrats were divided, and we know that the republicans soon thereafter gained power and held it ever since almost uninterupted ly. It may be for good or bad. The individual voter will deter mine this result. This is a repub lican state, and the chiefest news- paper is repuDiican. it win sup port any old ticket that happens to bear the republican brand. So it is needless to cavill as to results. The people will choose as to nation al policies. If expansion with its concomitants, all of them evil, are preferred to democratic doctrines, then the state will be republican. Otherwise, it will be democratic. The Arqub further believes, though, that Mr. Mitchell can and will do more for the state, locally, than Mr. Corbett could have done. loinoseoi ihe argus persuaB sion, politically, who disagree with it as to the propriety of the demo crats having voted for Mr. Mitchel it will Ray that it respects their opinions, kt cannot agree with them. This is very likely more than they will say of the opinion of The Argus, but this is what Th Argus is accustomed to bear in all its efforts. And so the inci dent closes. - Mb. Corbett baa been retired He contributes his reflections and tbey are not of roseate order for adornment of the Oregonian columns in Tuesday's paper, and his wail is rather amusing. He tells of fighting for principle for forty years, and criea because Mr Mitchell baa been elected. Truth is Mr. Corbett has done more to debauch Portland politics than any other possible agency. He has had a gang with him which had no other motive than to rob the poor old senile sinner. His candidacy for the senate has in jected improper practices into pol itics clear to the country districts, where we would at least expect to , find some semblance of decency. Under the direction of Mr. Cor bett's lieutenants primaries were tolen outright last June not packed, but stolen. His retire ment is a just retribution for such pothouse practices, and a proper rebuke, anyway, to aspirants to high positions who have but one recommend, and that recommend a dispensation of boodle. Oregon ; might have done better than to have elected Mr, Mitchell but it ' oould not have done better than it did when Mr. Corbett was retired. Mr. Corbett has a right to blow his "dough" for whatsoever pur pose, whether it is for charity or Salem and Portland bilge water and doom, bat the good people of Orejon did not want him . for sen ator and he is not senator, even if If ho la. aa tha anintlv (IrecnniRn 1 " , ' ' " 0 uuuhm o urn, hiiu pernaps aeatn, tt Mid, "Iht NobletRonjan'oflbytheuseof three or four doses! tricru all. Again, a Riley Give would say, wo are not sure but that Mr. Mitchell's election and Corbetl's defeat "is a direct blow at the bead of the gold standard in Oregon. Tub Oregonian has suddenly dis covered that the administration is opposed to the Isthmian canal. If the Oregonian had political sense and it has plenty of it it should have long since known that. And, no doubt, it has known it All of the great railroad corporations were keen for the election of Mr. MiKin-ley- and so was the Oregonian This being the case, is it to be ex peeled that the railway corporations do not expect a decent and pro per return for thoir efforts and their eompaign contributions? And, the proper retan in this case will be to keep the canal project in "hock." And there it will be kept, beyond doubt. The democratic senators at Washington have done yeoman service in temporarily delaying the progress of the ship subsidy bill,' and by so doing have conferred a benefit upon the country at large. When men like Jones. of Arkansas, and Vest, of Missouri, take the for um for elucidation of the public on these question of robbery, some thing drops. If we only had a tew more men like these veteran ser vants, we would get wholesome legislation. Boss Hanna may in deed tremble whea his pet schemes for private enrichment at the ex pense of the public are unrolled for public scrutiny. The cracker is sometimes pulled off the party whip. W HO IS KKSFON8IBI.E? Yet, what would have been her new ia cord in this rtspect bat for the action of certain democrats? The session was witbin a few minutes of the end, and in l heir bitter factional division, the repub licans sat sullen, defiant, and hopeless'? impotent to agree upon a senator. A deadlock at that moment was as certain as death. It was then that democrats, democrats who have t .-en called "revo lutionists," democrats who have been called "repodistionists," threw aside party prejudice and made it possible to carry out the law for election of senator.
