A MATTER OF
KNCE.
INDIFFER.
The election of last spring is still
fresh in the minds of the people of
Washington County. While The
Arous baa always been partisan,
at that election it laid aside its
partisanship to participate in a
campaign which would mean more
of purity in public life. We all
remember how the Corbett lieoten
ants in this county carried pri
maries by corrupt methods; we all
know how primary larceny abound
ed and how openly these corrupt-
ing innueuces were carried on.
Thi Arous made and based its
fight against a furtherance of such
work. Proceeding as it waa the
yileness of the practices going on
under the gtiise of practical poll
ics was oouna to leave its impress
on the youth coming into his pow
ers. Thk Alices, with all its
feeble ability implored the people
of Washington county to rebuke
the practices which in private
life would have been called theft
and such a rebuke as the county
never before witnessed followed.
We now find a man elected on the
Union ticket gone over to the Cor
bett fold, thus representing not
single vote cast for him and mak
ing mean and miserable the prin
ciples on which his election rested.
The Washington County delega
twn in the legislature went there
unpledged as to United States Sen
ator but the question of one of
them going to the corrupt Corbett
regime waa remote and absurd. For
something for some reason and
that reason is easily discerned bv
those who understand how Cor
belt's boodlers work, Vincent has
gone into the filth out of which the
county waded at the last June
election. Thk Argus owns no
body; it has nobody controlling it
but it does know that this breach
of faith is painful and humiliating.
It does know that the balance of
the delegation must feel the action.
keenly, of one who should have
stood by them.
When it is considered that the
people of this county felt that we
had enjoyed a moral and political
waahday, so to speak, and then
find thM corruption has found one
who was elected aa a moral protest
against unclean politics, they must
feel in sympathy with this paper
when it holds that we should stand
ready to endorse almost any move
that will remove this old gentle
man Corbett from the field of Ore
gon politics, and with his removal
that of the Graham Glasses and
his immediate political helpers. If
the vote last spring is indicative ot
anything, it would appear that the
people of Washington county
should stand ready to sanction any
move that will mean political bur
ial of this gross, corrupting force
in Oregon politics Corbettism.
We do not think that any faith
would be broken in scotching this
element, and if this wholesale pur
chase goes on and it will by
Corbett and his people, it would be
no political sin for the balance of
the delegation to find a way to ac
complish Corbett's permanent re
tirement. Any decent republican
would answer.
A CROWN OF SHAMH.
Oregon's crown of shame is that it
has a governor whose preachment
is so laudable while his actions be
lie, the text. We all remember
how this man Geer has again and
again been charged with selling a
public office, without prosecution
following the scandal, if it be a
scandal. We all remember how
one Hi Plummer publicly stated
that he bad paid Geer one thousand
dollars and for his money, Geer, if
elected, was to pay him back in an
offloe of state employ. The vari
ous newspapers of the State, barr
irj the two dailies in Portland,
five the matter the prominence it
emanded. In one little paper in
Kiwtern Oregon the Governor
sought to reply. The defenee was
very weak and ailly. The Qorern
or's defense should have beeo the
courts, but here is where he waa
afraid that Plummer might pro
due overwhelming proof of the
charge. -
This man Geer now publicly ad
dressee the Oregon legislature and
aska for probity. If they follow
the executive's lead, we ahall have
a pretty session of grafting. Let
us hope, however, that the legisla
tors will be true to their trust, and
et us hope, when 1902 rolls around
that Oregon will rid itself of tbie
crown of shame the man with a
voice but sans action and purity of
motive. What a farce must the
gubernatorial message be to those
familiar with his career.
A BABE BETRTAU
The question is now being asked,
"Who is this man Vincent, a
member of the delegation represent
ing Washington county in the
house of representatives?' And
well might the question be asked.
Ibis man -a so-called man is
a reputed homeopathic doctor re
siding at Tualatin, in the south
eastern portion ot this county. For
several years past he represented
himself to be a populist and affili
ated with that party. In 1S9S the
the populists, democrats and silver
republicans effected a union and
nominated the candidates on the
union party ticket, which this so
called man supported. . At the last
state election, the union party
still being intact, nominated its
ticket, and A. W. Vincent was one
of its nominees for representative.
He accepted the nomination, sub
scribed to the declarations of that
organisation, and waa elected.
It is doubtful whether any of the
candidates on the union party
ticket could have been elected had
there not been a division in the re
publican ranks upon the issue of
"Corbett" and "anti-Corbett." It
is a well known fact that large
numbers of anti-Corbett men voted
for the candidates of the union
party organisation of this county,
including this man Vincent It is
needieaa to say that the members
of the anion party organization of
this county were and still are
equally opposed to the candidacy
or election to the U. S. senate of
Mr. Corbett, or any other republi
can for that matter.

as an open book to this so-called
man Vincent. And jiow what do
we see? Against the earnest pro
tect of the other members of the
delegation from this county, and of
the union party committee, this so-
called man deliberately went into
the republican caucus and thereby
assisted in the organization of an
admitted "Corbett house!" He
voted for all of the caucus nomi
nees. including the republican
speaker-elect, Reeder, as against
one of our own members of the
house, Representative Edson, who
was the regular caucus nominee
of the democrats, populists and
silver republicans for that office
Briefly, then, we have the record oi
this so-called man Vincent
there a man who possesses a thim
bleful of brains and can not un
derstand tbe moving cause of this
startling change of, heart? Who is
it that refuses to believe that here
is another "Corbett vote" secured
in the "good old way?" If the
Almighty was unable to admiuis
ter adequate punishment merited
by Judas Iscariot, it is to be hoped
that for the safety of hie Satanic
Majesty the Almighty has con
ceived, by this time, a method of
future punishment commensurate
with the crime this so-called man
Vincent has perpetrated against
society and his constituents. Men
of this stripe should be socially
and politically ostracized. Many
men have suffered this' for crimes
not nearly so black as this which
the man Vincent is now guilty of.

the old veterans of the first five
regiments of the Cay use War yet
in life. Why cannot Oregon give
these men relief instead of appro
priating to monument funds?
What is there wrong about this?
Did not these old men practically
save the country for the country?
Have they been honored? Are
they not entitled to being honored?
The Arotjs believes that Oregon
would do well to remember then
in their hour of age. Congress
does not seem disposed to read his
lory ind find out that we ever bad
an Indian war out here in th
early days of the Pacific North
west.
