The Altai's' reporter's note book burned last week and as a matter of course a number of memoranda for news purposes went up iu smoke. Shriff J. W. Sewell has engaged the bouse owned by J. C. Hare, on Main Street and will soon take up his residence in the city. Mr. and Mrs. Sewtll are general favorites in Hillsboro and they will be a welcome addition to the commun ity. Geo. H. Carleton was at Port land this week, visiting with an Eastern friend at the Imperial. Information is received at this city that an insane person a wom an is at large in the vicinity of Farmington. She is supposed to recjntly have come from Wash ington state. She wanders about from house to house and acts very strangely. The proper authorities have been notified and the unfor tunate woman will be looked after. Kenyon Crandall has gone to New Whatcom to spend the sum mer. He may engage in business of some kind in that sectioa. Judge E. D. Sh attack, one of Portland's pioneer attorneys, is seriously ill at his home in that citv. Judge Shattuck was one of Washington county's fiist school superintendents, and has a large acquaintance among our early pio ueers. Mrs. J. E. Lone, of Portland, was last week the guest of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Leisy, ef Leisyville. The Lrdas, of Gales Creek bad the misfortune to lose a valuable horse by accident yesterday. Four horses went over a steep enbank ment resulting in the death of one. None of the other three was badly injured. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Colestock were in the city Sunday from Port land. ' E. B. Sappington returned from the mountains this morning and will go after his family at once. He states that nearly all the camp ers are returning home on account of rain, which of course, makes it very unpleasant for resorters. J. N. Grable and family and Henry Wehrung and family have gone to Newport to spend the sum mer vacation. Now that the Forest Grove post office struggle is over there will be no more fun there until the pri maries are again on hand. Kimberlin has returned from his trip to JNome, arriving here Thursday evening. He thinks that the exodus will be great out of that country. The family of F, M. Heidel have gone to the mountains for a fort night's camping Mr. Heidel will return to the city in a day or so and (hen will receive samples from the farmers for the fair at Salem this fall. Rev. T.
