There were some very spirited con
tests in the bicycle races given by
the Native Son laet Saturday and

they intend to hold their reputa

als, they seem to be well satisfied
and all say they will try again.
The course was very heavy and

E. A. Dailey lost a little time
and gained considerable sleepless

of his fingers injured, in a hayfork

Two little children, w hose par
ents, the McCoubreys, reside in
North Hillsboro, yesterday morn
ing clambered into a vehicle which
was standing on the street near
their bouse. The horses started
and threw each out after a spirited
run. Neither was severely hurt,
although it was surprising that a
fatality did not ensue. After the
team broke loose from the vehicle
one of the animals broke down the
street and ran to the Luce place,
where it spent the forenoon wal
lowing in the grain.

Tuesday afternoon a fire broke
out in the bouse occupied by L. A
Long, Seventh Street and owned by
Mrs J. L. Adkins. lbe blaze
started by a defective flue, as near
as can be ascertained. Tbe build
ing was an entire loss. Insurance,
over I4UU. otning was saved
from the kitchen and from the up
per story of the building, although
nearly all else was safely taken
out. Tbe personal loss will he
covered, perhaps, by $200.

spot in forehead, left ear cut, in

J. H. Stanley, who was at one
time the principal of the Hillsboro
schools, but who is now engaged in
the superintendency of the St.
Johns school, was iu the city Mon
day, doing business with the pro
bate court. Mr. Stanley has a hoet
of friends in this city who are al
ways pleased te see him. The
gentleman is recognized as one of
Oregon's ablest educatois ana he is
rapidly gaining distmctiou in his
profession.
News wa received here last eve
ning that John B. Gates, who was
taken to Hsppner the first of the
week in the hopes that bis health
would be improved in that section,
was growing rapidly worse. This
is sad news for the family and Mr.
Gates many friends in this city.
