Dear Money means Debased Property, and Profitless American Product. Our Consequent loss is our Creditors' Gain. Ha no use for Marcus A. Hanna THE KANSAS CITY CONVENTION The Kansas City convention can not he said to have been a partis an body in any considerable re spect. It was the voice of people who have been in touch with the whole people of the United Stales. The platform espouses liberty for all ople who know enough to fight for and enjoy liberty; it be upeaks for the oppressed a justice; it endorses the spirit of rectitude to all; it asks that the letter and spirit of our constitution be fol lowed and it demands a democrat ic government. It.isksthat tnon oply take its hands off the throat of government and in this, as in all other demands, it has the sup port of all our people, at heart in sympathy with American institu tions. The platform does not please all but who are those not pleased? The administration journals and the peanut politicians who can't distinguish between a Dutchman in South Africa, fighting for liberty and a Boxer in China, fighting against a government established for six thousand years. It is only the other day that The Akgvs edi tor was asked why the Kansas City platform did not sympathize with the Boxers. The msn asking the question is high in oflicial life and heartily endorses the administra tion in all its phases, in fact, he is a "cuckoo" of the worst kind. He thinks Oreat Britain, no doubt, is justified in forcing its govern ment on the Boers and no doubt holds that the sturdy Dutchmen who are bghting Khoclesism are "Boxers" of the Chinese order. This man is not in touch with Am ericanism, ana his question is in dicative of the state of mind of the big and little journals who sup port imperialism and government by the banks and trusts. These people are afraid of a democracy They want dukedoms and dummies to rule. They want princes and parasites, for that means eternal debt and toadyism. It is not for such that our forefathers resented the encroachments of a domineer ing king; it is not for such that men bared their breasts that a de mocracy might live. But for those who love freedom who love justice; who love honest expression; free speech; who love plain people and for those who be lieve Americanism the "paramount issue," the Kansas City platform presents the ideal instrument and one that is a new dispensation To its support will be gathered ail those whose votes are not coereed by a commercial and toadying press; all who dwell outside the pale of prejudice and all who fully understand the importance of government giving the greatest good to the greatest number. European countries, come to us an nually to escape imperial govern-j merit and are we now to give them j that from which they ran? Are we ouiselves to give thesj people a eovernnient which is against the best impulses of nature? Are we to give them a "one man" govern ment? Are we to follow the f hH bteps of the dark ages an.l belie the very instrument on which our liberty is founded? Are we U surrender the liberty our constitu tion grants us by giving our rights a w a v courting a condition which makes war, like it has been with the English possible all the time? We believe the solier sense of our people says no. It is evident that B. P. Cornel ius has caught his second wind and is again pushing on that ele phant. The Argus cannot help but admire his persistency. Ben has all the qualities of a statesman, hv.r.osh! When it comes to a staver," Ben, vou 're "it.'" Two weeks ago and the Hanna ion rnals were telline us that the j uionev question was settled beyond le reach of the democrats and that declaration in that regard would a work of "supererogation." Now that the democratic platform contains a specific declaration, these same journals tell us that it is the paramount issue, and that it is a menace. Ul ail ioois in exisieme, the political fool is the most su preme idiot. "Cuckoo," you little cusses," for you will not be in af ter awhile! Mark is going to be retired in November. The Arocs published the repub lican platform when it was adopt ed. This week it publishes the democratic platform. Every read er of this paper should read this instrument and read it carefully. Reed it twice and read it to rind the good in it. Read as you would read a business proposition. Read it as an American should read it, with a desire to find the truth of the statements. When you have lone this you will have done your self credit and you will have dis covered a platform that is far reaching and true to Americanism. Tub Hanna papers all over the land are trying hard to convince the temperance people that the canteen" question is not a men ace to our soldiery. The canteen proposition is one entirely of exe cutive leniency, and if the Presid ent is a Methodist he is not living up to the tenets of his chuch and hence is not a good Methodist. The more army we have the more num- erous must be me canteens ami Imperialism is one of the best schools for drunkenness that can obtain. Men who have time to throw away, will find devilment and lime for canteens. But why do notour ''cuckoo" journals come out and say that that class of men who have no ambition but to soldier in the regular army are generally men incapable of doing anything else and want a good time and plenty of booze." The following is the list of letters re maining m the HUlstioro post omce un claimed: D. Wilsou, Mr. h. J. Morgan. All Utters not called for by July it. iooo will be sent to the dead letter otfice. Connell's. . Marshal Gheen has been d iiiy some Rood work lately on the city sidewalks and thev look business now. Let the good work go on. Those journals which are support ing Mr. McKinley simply because they follow the dictation of bossism are not expected to have a good word for simplicity ot government They are mere tools nothing more and tiothing less. They have appreciation of liberty; neither they have any conscience in the matter as to whether they are right or wrong. With them it is merely a matter of what the great boss says. They forget that im perialism and democracy cannot go hand in hand, they forget that force and republicanism are antag onistic elements, but they know and withhold their honest convict ion, because in so doing they give their masters the best service. ' The veriest school child is aware that Europe is our greatest object lpRsdn of lmrerialisav There is where we find the down trodden and the poor; from there we draw our immigration. Thousands from European shores and from all The Independent has suddenly discovered that the Union party has a machine in this county, looks very much like it. Mr. V. Morgan stays in the clerk's of fice; Mr. Bradford stays in the sheriff's office and Capt. Collins stays as janitor. Mr. Wann's se lection as deputy, Robert Wirtz, of Forest Grove, is the selected deputy for the recordership. But as the Independent has seen 8) much machine work which of course hurts its feelings it imagines that all things are done by a machine But right here is pre-eminently the time to recall the Independent'! attention to the fact that there was one machine; and one which was well oiled and ball bearing, which refused to carry its load at the re cent election. The Union "ma chine" appears to be a 1900 model with all the latest improvements and it carried the majority of our people in the recent election, to say nothing of the hundreds more wh were kept from so doing by the powerful voices of the Independent ami Oregonian, the Washington County first and bull fiddles ask ing the dear ' people "to save the country" to "bossism."
