Has no nse for Marcos A. Hanna A M KNACK OK IMl'OUT. The gravest menace of national history is now hovering over our institutions and this fall's elections will tell us whether we are to be committed to a policy that will mean blight to our nation", or whether we shall continue to grow in a national greatness that will distinguish us from all other pow ers. This country has since 1770 been an asylum for old world peo ple who desired to lie rid of the tax eating evils of militarism; the im positions of a growing soldiery on the purses of the producers, and the encroachments of a power that has no 'sympathy with justice that arts only as an automatic ma chine at the word of a few who may be able to dictate the author ity of a national administration. The German, while he naturally loves his Fatherland as being the scene of his youthful days, came here to avoid being ridden through life with a soldier astride his neck; the Englishman came here that he might have a fuller voice in the affairs of a country in which he lived. The intelligent of these classes, and of the Irish who are here, too well know that the posi tion our administration has taken has been a mistake. The embrac ing of militarism for conquest in strange latitudes means an auto cracy which lays popular govern ment aside as of no purpose. II tramples upon the right of citizen ship; it opens the door to a system that has in the end met disaster in all ages; it means the perpetuity of debt as a national power, snd that means debt for individuals; it means impoverishment. All of these things are not party considerations, only as parties take them up for endorsement or reject ion. These are matters of great comment, and a man should first consider them from the standpoint of a citizen not as an opportunist. The man who endorses this militar ism should be the first to shoulder hia musket to go where the powers dictate; he should be ready to have no voice in public affairs for when war is a feature of govern ment the commander in chief is the law. All this is contrary to the very essence of our government al ideas. This is not a matter of party. It is a matter of sense and justice. This should, and must be, a government aside from a mil itary autocracy, and the sober second thought of a great people will prove the force of this line of reasoning. Hillsboro is going to have a Fourth of July celebration this year that will be an event worth witnessing. Look out for the post ers the next few dav. Mr. Corbett's dream to again represent the people of Oregon in national senate has turned out to be a nightmare. Thus again is the partiarchal "old gentleman" bled for naught. Thk Boers are still putting up a Btrong fight against British troops, and it is a fight that is saving as possible of Dutch lives. The Dut ch republics stand today just where America stood when' the French came to our aid and without whose help we could never have attained our freedom. The Akqcs is ex tremely sorry to see the administ ration organs exulting over British euccess. But perhaps these same , organ are sorry that America ob tained her independence. Nc doubt! The age of the love of justice seems to have had its day. Our chiefs are become commercial- ists. , It is time that we had an ad ministration that has some regard for first principles. And, as Eng land had her Cromwell and her Gladstone, and will again have thorn, so. we," too, will again havi our Jetlerson and our I.i nonius THAT BEAVERDAM CUT-OFF The goml neot.le of lieaverduiii r cinot save the Union 1 "jjitdative ticket a great scarf in the twni ; flection Hiul st the same time held ! m,i a l,,o for lb. Cornelius ticket! which did not nearly iitaterialue. j It is a wellknown fact that the Bea verdant roads have vast travel. and they are badly cut up bv trav el from up county points. The taxpayers there feci that they have not, in the past, Iveen given t tiough aid for their roads and they allege their petitions for appropriations have Wen turned down by all coun ty administrations, irrespective of party. This election they fell that, inasmuch as they had returned a majority of li against Cornelius for county judge two years ago, they must now support the Cornel ius legislative ticket, as the change had brought tbetii no comfort. So a republican attorney, from Mult nomah county, made them a pro position that if the precinct wouid only return an overwhelming ma jority for Mr. Cornelius and his legislative colleagues, they would push a bill through, cuttinu off a large part of the precinct, placing it in Multnomah. The proposition was made, that is sure, lien and Mr. Haines, wjien the matter was made known, branded it as a 'Union lie." Last Saturday night a friend of the Union movement debated the ijnestion with the two gentlemen in the presence .of a large audience in the Union Hall He conclusively proved that it was mt a I nion he, bill tnat a Port land attorney had promised to de liver the goods. The matter was fought to the bitter end, and, in stead of the Cornelius ticket get ting one hundred majority, as they confidently expected, out of a total of i-2" votes, Ben received 27 ma jority; Haines received 10 major ity; Stilt received 2l (probably w?- cause of his prohibition sympath ies;) Buchanan, "2; and briggs, 'lh. The Beaverdam people feel that they have a grievance, and no doubt thev have, but it was un fortunate that the Union legislat ive ticket had to War the burden. By hard work toe slump was avoided, much to the chagrin of Messrs. Cornelius and Humes. The precinct gave the Union coun tv candidates a handsome majority owing to the hard work done at the polls by 'nomas .Miller and his friends. All this aside, the Cedar Mill district should have aid for its roids. Why? Because it is more than a local affair. Hundreds ol train? from outside precincts travel over the Beaverdam roads, thus in the tall and winter cutting up what little road that is put in re pair in the dry season. Mrs. Alice Miller, wife of John Miller, ex-sheriff of Clark county, Wash., is in the city, the guest of her mother, Mrs. Susan Lrown. SHERIFF'S SALE.
