It was so deceptive that Cleveland democrats) r-gulU itandardists-would not sup - . V Again, the republican St. Louis flatfc-rm advocated that of which the Independent, that bawd of jour nalism and politics, has said: "It will decrease from one-half to two- third the price of every thing Ore-! goes beyond conception. Thepres gon has to sell," and "it will double I ident may as well go to the parting and treble tho debt of every man in the state." So it is clear that Tug Argus editor is not supporting and cannot support the republican "St. Louis platform" The Inde pendent editor will, howt ver, con tinue to support any thing labelled republican. With him it is a name nothing else. THE MITCHELL ORGAN. The recent editorial positions of the Portland Morning Tribune corrob orate the assertions made several days ago that the paper was a Mitchell organ edited and control ed in the interests of the politician and ex-senator. The Tribune is in a peck of trouble. It wants to see a middle-of-the-road ticket put out in Oregon, to be run in the interest of Mr. Mitchell. It editorially charges that Messrs. Young and U'Ren were owned by Corbett and Simon, and now, ai read between the lines, wants them retired, feel ing that a straight ticket, in their charge, would be adverse to Mitch ell's ticket. So it seems that the Tribune forecasts are viz: The tickets in the field will be, gold standard republican; Mitchell re publican; and the silver ticket put out by the unionists. The Mitch ell people fear the union ticket and want a "straight populist" ticket in the field to draw votes away from the unionists in order to give the Mitchell men success. People believing in bimetallism were led to believe tlie Tribune was a silver paper. They have now found that it sought silver support to gain a footing and immediately the time was ripe for financial sup port, switched to the Mitchell stan dard. It is no wonder the Tribune wants Young and U'Ren ousted and new men in control. A very enthusiastic republican and one who evidently favors the subject of hia inquirieB writes The Argus to know the editor's sincere and hidividual opinion of Ex-Sena tor John H. Mitchell. As the in terrogator takes this paper he al ready knows what that opinion is, but, as an answer is at this time re quired, as Portia said: "God made him, therefore let him pass for a man"." PAUTY PEHSONIFICATION. Mack Hanna has squeezed through the portals of the United States senate by one vote. It was a close shave and the syndicate corruption lost both cuticle and money. He was the logical choice of the Obio legislature which had several ma jority republican. The newly elec ted Senator is the beau ideal representative of the re publican party; he stands for cor porate interests which are typified and sought to he made perpetual through his party; he has dearly paid, personally, for his election, but republicanism has triumphed and Hanna should be proud to wear "store laurels" on bis sena torial crown. It makes no differ- itl ence to him or his parly that the legislature which elected him had, prior to the recent campaign stood with a majority of eighty-seven which was reduced by the poll to a majority of five! Six years will be enough time for Hanna in Congress. It is all he wants and his policy by that time will be either established or complelly overthrown. That he is representing a minority of his state by fifteen thousand goes for nothing. Take him as he is, it is a good selection the typical, chas e idea of syndicate power vthe ad ministration personified. We have him; we must bear him for over six years. A DEAD OH08T. Senator Ghatdler has had ah inter view with the president and ascer tained that he is for international bimetallism, provided we can get it through England's consent. This seems to satisfy Mr. Chandler, who occasionally tells the truth about the gold standard especially when the wages begin to "raze" around the Senator'8 New Hampshire home. But the Senator is too wise to be fooled by the president unless he wants to be deluded. International ; nonsense! What accursed foolish- j iiepo is nils rot tfiiiib even goou men will sometimes follow! Why any man of ordinary sense expects Eng- land to act against the best inter ests of those who control England and English laws the wealthy of the ways at once, for he will gain nothing by so much straddling. It is insulting intelligence to even con sider this international twaddle about our money standards. The "ghost" itself is dead and none but the unthinking huz it to the mind's i heart. COUNTRY IS SAFE. From the tone of a letter published in the Rosebnrg Review, which let ter is signed by the vice-president of the A. P. A., that society is again endeavoring to cut some promi nence in the coming campaign The A. P. A. has always been run as a side show to the republican party except when its officers have sold out to other parties just at the eve of election which, of course, is very seldom here in Oregon, as the "opposition" r rely has much plutocratic gold. The country is not in the throes of dissolution. It has nothing to fear from Catholic ism; nothing to fear from the Prot estants. . The A. P. A. has no cause for life in Oregon unless it is used for a Mitchell booster. The toler ance of the age does not admit of A. P. A.ism and this is proven in the fact that many men, seeing its political hoofs under the wonld-be virtuous garb cf "patriotism,'" have left the organization, sincerely ash amed of having made chumps of themselves. UNION AND SUCCESS. The people of Oregon who are in favor of American ideas of money and law will be able to put tTeir votes in the ballot box as a unit in the coming campaign. This will mean success. The unionists have votes enough to carry the state ticket and the legislature. They ought to elect both congressmen, beyond a shadow of a doubt. It is not not at all unreasonable to ex pect great gains over the vote of the past. In any event, we shall have practically a union vote. The people will no. brook division. The man who tries to divide the anti- gold standard vote in Oregon is go ing to meet with trouble and op probnum. 1 ricks that are viun and ways that are dark" are nut able to keep the people divided against themselves. GOD AM) THE PARTY. The strange and persistent fanatic ism which seems to permeate the latter day republican party in its leaders calling upon God and to God etc., is highly significant of that which we would rather not recognize in our nation No party has a "cinche" on God's dictums and when a boodler gets up and tells us about "God's reigning" it makes "citizenship, irrespective of party, profoundly" want to go out and puke, or purge, or both. The bawl of a hypocrite! When it comes down to God's love forarty all people expect it to be centered on the prohi's or Bryan supporters although modesty naturaliy keeps us from making our opinions pub lic. "God reigns!" what an insult to the Creator this coming from a boodler who believed that with his defeat would end the republican party. The wonder is that Mr. Brice did not send a telegraphic '.'Amen!" along with it to keep Hanna's telegram company. Whkn John II. Mitchell lent his voice and pen for independent free coinage of silver his supporters in ihe republican party were earnest advocates of an American system of money. It is noticable that as soon as he turned to support the ''irrational agreement" he fell from grace with tlie strength of his party. It is said that the newly elected Fenator from Ohio, immediately af ter he was chosen, sent to the pres ident this telegram, "God reigns and the republics n party still lives." There is evidently some mistake here. Hanna must have written, "Gold rained and the re publican party etc." The operator simply got lost. Thk, administration ought to rec oenice SDain's bel'irarenev with , out delay, and nut n stot to Cuban j butchery of Spanish patriots, poor ( indeed is a com try like ours when 1 it will allow the cruel Cubans to continue a savage slaughter of III- nocent Spanish soldiers, right on our very shores.
