The K)litical atmosphere is very light nnd transparent, as yet, to the casual observer, but then is brew ing in the republican ranks, a storm of no mean magnitude. The em issaries ui Dolph are buBily engag ed in rot king and priming thepri nisrie for the coming fray. As yet the work is being neatly cohered, diplomacy being considered the best proceeding. , When the several county, conventions make their nominations the Dnlnh men will be L.l. n .1 iVna Hill MAl.W tl 1 t. , DM, I IT, 111! WIVJ v.'.MV taw. ing meir nanus oii iuc unci, n present it is desirous of having whole precincts of harmony built up so that the Anti-Dolph and free silver elements can be thrown back into line after the nominations. There is being some smooth politi- eil wire-mitting done, and the chances are that the next legisla ture, if it be republican in its ma jority, will have a repotition of the senatorial fight. To insure this majority, they will not, it is said, put up for election or defeat any of the members of the legislatorial body, but nominate practically new men, dress up the old pledges in holiday array, make new affirmations of reform and sail into the campaign. Of course, none of them will try to defend the last legislature's shortcomings and all dampened ardor will be dried out with a few songs in which no men tion will be made of the '-thirty." It is supposed that a gold plank will be placed in the platform, none whatever, and that in any event the free eilver element will fall into line. Thk republicans contend their meeting at Portland was not to out line a policy nor pass judgment upon what the party had done, or was to do. What did they meet for? To hear the quintette sing a bawdy song or two and administer a drubbing to the "recalcitrant" thirty? Tbentliuse and promote harmony was their intent and they were successful. The Argtjb is not inclined to grieve because Coggwell bolted neither is it surprised. That $2000 attorney fee of his which he pushed through a republican legislature last winter, clearly showed to even verdant newspaper men, that the doughty Southern Oregon states man was no stranger to republican sentiment. The Independent says the songs suiig by the Wondburn Quintette Jhad uo point, except coarse pro fanity. The Independent could have said worse than that and still confined itself to the truth. Parliament has convened 111 London, and a busy session it will be. If the two houtseg succeed in unravelling the kinks put in the British Lion's tail, they will have done well. If the present Congrftus would ex jiipRH little more Solicitude for this tuition find a little less for foreign "subject matter, it would le -better for all concerned. The "thirty" nenn nil to spirp rte tho. little joke perpetrated upon tlit in by tbeir fellow repub licaii leitgut rs. Which is as nts ex jf -ctrtl.
