CLAIMS are made that the large American flag that hangs in the court
yard of the posiofice department building at Washington, D. C, is the
largest in the world. It measares 71 by 37 feet and weighs 90 pounds.
Major-General H. C. Rogers, U. S. A., was recently decorated in the Italian
embassy at Washington by Colonel di Berraezzo, Italian -military attache.
General Rogers received the order of the crown' of Italy for his services in
the world war. - ;
Does. the photograph . tell tales on the great commoner? ' Was . William
Jennings Bryan asleep when his brother Charley received -the nomination as
governor of Nebraska?
In the cement-testing laboratories of the bureau of standards is an air
analyzer capable of sifting particles of cement of microscopic size. ' The finest
screen-produced is a 200-mesh sieve, yet the government's new machine does
work that would be done by a 1000-mesh screen, were it possible to create one.
Air introduced into the glass bulbs separates the fine particles and carries
them vp the slack.
The proposed National Academy of Science building wilt be buUt onthe
mall in Washington and will face the recently completed Lincoln memorial.
It is planned as a focal point for students' of scientific research.
With the delegation of 100 American women, members of the National
Good WUl delegation, who sailed recently for France on the liner La France,
were three gold-star mothers. They are Mrs. William B. Abbey of Philadel
phia, Mrs. Herman H. Bimey, also of Philadelphia, and Mrs. Otto Brewer of
Wichita, Kan. The good will delegation is under the auspices of the Ameri
can committee for devastated France.
An airplane equally at home in all of the three elements, airland and
water, has been successfully tried oat by the navy department af Anacostia.
It is a Vickers Viking, made in England. It has a pontoon for landing on
water and wheels on which it may run on earth. Its wings are large enough
to carry six people. The engine is a 650-horse power Napier. It takes
off in 9 seconds on land and in 11 seconds on water.
