WASHINGTON FIRES
16 UNCHECKED
Flames Sweep Over 1000
Acres of Timber.
GREEN FORESTS SWEPT
Blazes, Spreading In Spite of Ef forts
of Crew, Destroy One
Small Sawmill.
OLYMPIA, 'Wash.. June 17. (Spe
cial.) A forest fire which Btarted
late in May on the Coweeman river,
ten miles east of Kelso, "tonight was
etill raging unchecked in green tim
ber and was doing heavy damage.
F. E. Pape, supervisor of forestry,
was advised the fire has ravaged
about 1000 acres of timber, including
much small second-growth timber.
;in which the heaviest loss is sus
tained. The fire was not reported by
settlers when it first started and
was far beyond control when the
fire-fighting crew- was sent in.
A, large crew' has fought the fire
for two weeks without materially
checking it, Mr. Pape said.
Many loggers, both in eastern and
western Washington, taking ad
vantage of the cloudy weather the
past few days, have burised slash
ings they could not dispose of last
fall, Mr. Pape said.
ENGINE SPARKS SET FIRE
Flames in Forest at Onslow Are
Reported to Be Spreading.
ABERDEEN, Wash., June 17.
Sparks from a locomotive started a
fire in a large logged area of the
Kuhn Logging company at Onslow
last night. This morning the flames
were still spreading, but had not yet
reached green timber. A large crew
of men fought the fire all night, but.
according to reports from Carlisle
this morning, it is well under con
trol. A fire which started on the works
of the Stearns Logging company de
stroyed a small mill owned by Z. A.
Toye and several carloads of Jap
anese squares which had been cut
for the Japanese trade. While the
damage at the Kuhn works was
negligible, the damage at Carlisle
amounts to about $10,000.
FORESTERS CLOSE DEALS
6,000,000 Feet of Timber Sold to
Oregon Lumbermen.
EUGENE, Or., June 17. (Special.)
i J. H. Preston of the Washington,
D. C, office of the forest service;
F. E. Ames of the district office in
Portland; Nelson F. Macduff, super
visor of the Cascade national forest
with offices in this city, and E. H.
Hall, examiner in the office of the
Cascade forest, have just returned
from Oak Ridge and Landax, where
they looked after the sale of ap
proximately 6,000,000 feet of timber
to the Oak Ridge Lumber company
and the Landax Lumber company,
A sale of a lot of cedar poles from
the forest has also been made to
E. E. Smith of Oak Ridge.
This was Mr. Preston'a first trip
to this section of the' state, and he
was much interested in the timber
and in the road and trail work
under way in the forest, said Mr.
Macduff, who was a classmate with
him at the University of Michigan.
PECULIAR FLORA FOUND
Professor Sweetser Gets Speci
mens of Larkspur and Arabis.
UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eu
gene, June 17. (Special.) Profes
sor A. R. Sweetser, head of the bot
any department, has returned to the
campus after a month spent near
Kerby and Waldo in Josephine
county in classification of southern
Oregon flora with two unusual spec
imens. A red larkspur, which is fa
miliar as a bluish flower, and
purple arabis, which as seen in other
places i Oregon has always been
yellow, are the two specimens.
Paintings of 26 flowers In natural
color were made by Mrs. Sweetser
on the- trip. Although it was cold
the plant life was found in abun
dance and of such characteristic
types as to show that the region in
the Kerby quadrangle has a pecul
lax flora of Its own. .
