The sketch ahowa 'one of the entrances to Shat tuck school , In South Portland, a splendid example of city achool archi tecture of the modern type. Most building, or portions of Uvero. when clomly inspected, carry some faint message to most of us. For some reason this school entrance seems to uggest an atmosphere of rest and even study, holding out an invita tion to enter and take mental gym nastics. It is difficult to place the bit of architecture sketched above In any of the well-known schools, for It is a composite product. In it are com bined the Tudor and English college Gothio styles, wkh modern modifica tions. Architects have found, in tholr search for plans that would fit edu cational institutions, that by takinr the beet of these two schools of archi tecture and combining them, eliminat ing the two-foot walls of the past and substituting additional windows for more light, that they nearly ap proach the ideal. America has no true college type of building all it own, unless the Colonial-Virginian, such as has been used to great effect in some colleges In the outh,may be given that honor. However, the trend now is to try for subtle effects in school buildings, to merge them with the landscape when possible, and to get as far from the bizarre or striking as possible. The reason for this is that the predomin ance of massed structures detracts from the atmosphere, as It Is best In seats of learning to strive for sub dued end inspirational effects rather than the glaring. OLD-TIME PROSPECTOR BEGINS GOLD SEARCH IN SISKIYOUS "Death Valley Scotty," SpectacularfFigure of Boom Days, Hopes to Make Another Rich Strike, GRANTS TASS, Or., Jan. 21. Spe cial.) Alone, tramping the ls klyou mountains with a pack train, a dog and a gun for com panions, "Death Valley Scotty," one cf the most spectacular figures In the reining world during the'boom days In Kevada, has recovered from serious gun-shot wound's several years ago, and is seeking gold In this vicinity. While or. a trip in the "Sucker creek .district, George S. Barton, local min ing man connected with the Boswell mine, recently encountered . the old time prospector, whom he knew at the height of hla. prosperity, nearly 15 years ago. Mr. Barton declined to say where "Scotty" was prospecting. "Death Valley Scotty," named be cause of his mysterious trips Into the famous, .Death Valley district, from whence he always returned with a targe poke o gold, Is to celebrate his 69th birthday April 3. In spite of his years he has lost none of the keen ness of eye that caused men to hesi tate before drawing, a gun In past Cays. Reticent as to his activities. "Scotty" gave out no reason for his tramping the hills, nor why-he should be in Josephine county, when the gen eral belief Is that all he has to do Is to make one of his mysterious trips Into Death Valley and return with a load of gold. All attempts to learn his whereabouts since he was last be fore the. public eye failed. He ad mitted having been seriously wounded several years ago, and Is but now re training full use of one arm. News papers at the time carried an account of his death In a California dance hall, following the shooting. "Scotty," who Is a dry pan miner, having learned the game in desert country in 1867, still clings to his method- Water, applied to mining, has no attraction for the oldtlmer. He pans an usual, and makes his own as says. That his method Is not entirely unsuccessful is attested to by Mr. Harton. who saw samples of the ore, which, he said, showed color. Men who knew "Scotty" would at first fail to recognize him, declared Mr. Barton, who says the prospector row weighs about 160 pounds. In the old days "Scotty" tipped the Bcales at better than 200 pounds, but follow ing his sojourn in a. hospital, dropped to 75 pounds. Wl'th the knowledge that "Scotty" is still alive, mining men In this lo cality and others who know of his career are calling to mind tales of Death Valley Scotty" that used to fill the press. Among many stories Is that of his habit of chartering a special train, upon returning .from one of r's trips to Death Valley, and spending two weeks or so at a time In New York, where his extravagance brought forth much comment. Upon reaching the end of his gold, "Scotty" would dis appear for a time, and then suddenly come back with a sack of gold. A story Is told of his coming Into a saloon upon his -return from one trip, calling upon all to drink to his health. A large sack was tossed carelessly Into a corner. Those who were curious sought to learn of its con tents. Upon being opened it was found the wily prospector had caught a rattlesnake which he had .placed upon the gold, guarding It from tres pass. "Scotty" realizes he Is not as young as he might be, and Indicated he would retire from an active life upon making another strike. Commenting upon his exploits? he remarked that "He thought he was old enough now to show better judgment." Mining men are at a loss to under stand why "Scotty" is Interested in or looking over thjs section, as it is gen erally believed he has several rich caches In Death Valley, to which he alone knows the way. They cannot explain why the old prospector does not return to the fields with which he Is familiar. Instead of roaming the Sisklyous. ELKS TO ENTERTAIN POOR Minstrel Show to Be Staged at ' County Farm Today. The entire mlnstxel crhow staged by members of Portland Elks' lodge No. 142 will be given this aternoon at the Multnomah county poor farm for the benefit of the 400 Inmates of the Institution. Arrangements for this entertainment were made by Charles S. Rudeen. chairman of the county commissioners, who plans to provide some sort of entertainment for the poor farm at least once each month. A special car to carry the minstrel troupe to the farm has been donated to the Elks by the Portland Railway. Light & Power company. The enter tainment will begin at 2:30 P. M.
