A IX LOCAL WHEAT BIDS HIGHER Cables, However, Do Not Reflect the Chicago Advance. Local wheat bids advanced yesterday In line with the Chicago rise, the Novem ber delivery being up 20 5 cents and De cember 203 cents. Cables, however, did not reflect the Chicago advance and new export business remains out of the Ques tion. A moderate demand was reported In the coarse grain division. The California state crop report said: Harvesting now on with yields slightly better than forecasted last month. Acre age yield . 85 bushels per acre, versus 33 last year and 83 the tea-year average. About 20 per cent will be out for ensilage." Br 00m hall cabled: "Our Argentine agent raised his preliminary estimate of the wheat crop to 120.500,000 bushels surplus available for axport from the 1822 crop. Minnesota red river Ohlos failed to recover from a similar decline and closed slow and weak at $1.5001.05. During the month of September and October, potato shipments throughout the country were about one-third larger than for the same month last season. Shipments from all sections for the season have been one-fourth larger than last aeasoa and about one-third larger than for the same period In either 1919 or 1918. The weekly volume has been falling rapidly and Is now below average of the early weeks of No vember la recent seasons. BREAK IN BCTTKR PRICES COMING CmuMriw Cat Butterfat Quotation, to Prepare for Change. A ener4 break In butter prieei Is be lieved to be not far dl.tant and In prepa ration for such a chans. the local cream eries will on Monday out the burins price ot butterfat 2 cent, to 45 centa, delivered Portland. Butterfat price, have been out of line for aome time and It la the pur port of the manufacturers to straighten out this ancle before the seneral readjust ment of butter values takes place. The weakening factor of the market Is the early arrival of Australian butter on the coast. A bis shipment of 6300 cubes. each of 56 pounds, is due at San Francisco from Australia on November 22. This but ter which is said to score 03 points will be laid down at San Franolsco at 38 cents. Another large lot -It due on December 20. New Zealand butter is also coming in De cember and more la offered for January delivery. While not much -of this Australian but ter may come to Portland, It will have the effect of closing the California outlet for the surplus butter of Oregon and other northern statea. Australian eggs are also on the way to the coast, but they are too high in price to compete seriously with the domestic product. Egg receipts are increasing In the local market, but the demand Is strong enough to take care of all the arrivals. DRESSED TURKEY MARKET BREAKS Dealer, Offer Beat Stock at 40 tents, but There Are No Buyers. The dressed turkey market was In a bad way yesterday with a large supply on hsnd and no demand, Shlppsrs rushed In their turkey, to tak. advantage of the hlsh prices that recently prevailed and the result was a .lump. The top price asked on the street was 40 cents and No. 2 turkey, were offered at 30933 cents, but there were no buyers at any price. Most of the birds sent In would have been Im proved by another week of feeding. There was a wide difference of opinion . to the prices that will rule in the Thanksgiving trade, but most of the poul try men look for a market lower than last year's. One large handler predicted 3.1$ 38 centa as the general range. All agreed that a successful retail season could only be carried through thla year by hold ing prices to the consumer down to a rea sonable level, and this would mean lower wholesale prices and lower price, to the consumer. Live poultry prices were steady and un changed, but a break In the market Is generally expected. CHEAPER ONIONS NOT KXPECTlSD Market at Present la Quiet, but Tone la Stady. The onion market Is quieter, but prices are ateady at $4 to the grower, and it Is not likely the market will be any cheaper this season. In the consuming markets of the east a stesdy to firm tone continues with a mod erate demand. Eastern sacked yellow globes. NEW BOND ISSUES SELL QUICKLY Absorption of Offerings Hhows Sound In vestment Demand. NEW YORK, Nor. 12. With trading on the stock exchange reduced by two holi days, interest this week shifted to the broader field of finance, commerce and in dustry. Inquiry for high-grade securities, which sttended the recent fall in money rates, lost much of Its impetus, but the speedy sale of many new underwrltings offered cumulative signs of a sound investment demand. Eliminating the oils and equipments, which dwarfed all other Issues in strength and speculative importance, ths stock mar ket presented few features of interest. Ralls were irregular at beat, becoming heavy in spots when it developed that the leading eastern and western railways had Joined forces to cut wages. Recovery In the price of oils and by products was the most constructive fea ture. Domestlo sharea probably owed their strength lsrgely to recurrent rumors of salt water In the Mexican fields and gen eral dissatisfaction with conditions there. In the industrial aituatlon the most significant event was the large decrease in bookings reported by the United Statea Steel corporation for October. This wss the more disappointing because Septem ber's slight sain In tonnage, the first in more than a year, had encouraged hopes of a turn for the better. The diaarmament conference waa the subject of discussion In high- financial quarters, chiefly because of the conviction that it will bear, Indirectly at least, on the large foreign debts to this country Announcement that the British govern ment had arranged to make monthly in. terest payments gave rise to Intimations that France and some of the other allied nations may aoon make known their at tltude in this same connection.- It Is pointed out by international bank era. however, that the ability of the con tlnental countries to meet their payments to the United Statea rests largely on the outcome of affaire in Germany. - Further decline of the mark to a level, bespeaking economic paralysis. was. viewed with greater apprehension, 'especially in London and Paris. Parai-rtent buyinr by .ftron.? commission houses and shipping interests save a big upward swing today to wheat. Pricea closed strong1, 3c to 4o net higher, with December $1.00 to $1.00-14 nd May $1.13 to $1.13. Corn gained c to lo and oats Ho to 0 7.0. .Provisions finished uachansed to li'c lower. It wu current rosslp that ths buying of wheat was largely dut to a combina tion of eastern interests acting on ths basis that wheat pricea were too low and that an important advance waa to -be expected. Furthermore, advices told of country selling being limited, with primary receipts greatly reduced as compared with a year ago. Continued lack ot moisture was also reported from ths southwest, where new winter wheat seeding has been delayed and the crop has been handicapped by drouth. In addition, miller were after yellow hard winter wheat here, a grade which of late has been a drug on the mar ket. Exhaustion of the stock of No. 1 Manitoba in Liverpool and prospect of 1 decrease In the Uulted States visible sup ply total Monday tended likewise to help the bulls. The close was at practically the day's top. Corn and oats were moderately active and higher In sympathy with wheat. Sea board messages reported an active Euro pean demand for corn. Packers' selling of lard had a depressing effect on provisions. The Chicago grain letter received yes terday by the Overbeck tfc Cooke company of Portland follows: Wheat The strength of foreign markets was the chief stimulus here today and the close was at net gains of 8-Vit to 4 V. cents over Thursday. The extreme ad vance waa tn the December delivery, which was a reflection of the Improved milling demand for all grades of wheat. Stocks of contract wheat In Chicago are not large and any broadening of the outside milling inquiry easily cr nates a strong position before the end of December. Bearish news from Canada was without Influence. A Winnipeg meatiage reported bids out of line and said it looked aa If Winnipeg prices would reach a level under' the United States market which, will enable their wheat to come Into this country duty paid. The pronounced strength in securities has created a feeling of optim ism as to business conditions and com modity values, especially in the east, and buying of wheat from that section of the country la of such proportions that prices are apt to work irregularly higher al though we would like to see an Improve ment In the export situation before taking an aggressive position on the buying aide of futures. Corn It waa a strong market through out the session and responded readily to the advance in wheat. Receipts for two days were estimated at 810 cars and the cash market was firm at about one Cent advance. Shipping sales reported were 22(1.000 bushels. Including 64,000 to ex porters Country offerings to arrive are only fair despite recent predictions of an early and heavy movement of new oorn to market. Prices are at a level where the Investment side off era better oppor tunities. Oats Held firm with other grains and on buying led by commission houses and cash interests. Receipts were estimated at 115 cars and the spot trading basis waa firm. Country offerings to arrive light. Rye There was a fair trade In futures with shipping houses removing and placing hedges here against shlDnlnc sale and country purchase?!. Cash rye wae inactive with little offered. Leading futures ranged as follow: WHEAT. upen. High. l.oa CORN. -58 "4 OATS. .82-5, 3.-4 NOTICE!
