THE SUNDAY OltEGONIAX, PORTLAND, FEBRTTART 13, 192i ' 7. JOSEF HOFMANN IS HERALDED AS GREATEST OF PIANISTS Artist Who Will IMay at Heilig Wednesday Night Give Advice to Ambitious. . ft i.- fir" X 1 '- ? n ' It . v. - ' - ' ' ' S JOSEF HOFMA3V, WHO PLAYS HERE THIS WEEK, HEAD. LIXED AS GREATEST PIAX1ST. JOSEP HOFMANN. who will play at the Heilig- Wednesday night under the direction of Steers & Coman, says: "No one who is a doer of thlosrs who does them well enough to be considered the excep tion thinks primarily of himself." He goes on: "Art demands complete recognition and sincere recognition of her pre-eminence before she un folds within the nature of the one atutorb'ng her. She will not, because it is a violation of her laws, accept a position secondary to the individual seeking to interpret her. This may astonish some, yet it is a fact rigid as any ambitious musician has to face. Perfect sincerity plus perfect simplicity equals perfect achieve ment If the capacity of the individual allows." Mr. Hofmann's success In America has reached Proportions far greater than that of any present-day pianist, said a critic recently. "There is i greatness about the man that appeals to a circle extending beyond the purely musical. Of this abundant proof was given at his New York Carnegie hall recital. The hall was filled and 600 people crowded the platform. In this connection it will Interest managers throughout the country to know that the receipts for this concert were a717.60." Mr. Hofmann has just returned from London, where the reports of his work are fully as enthusiastic as those of our own critics. - of this conspiracy. Is said to be the f first attempt of uch a conquest, 'inis lmoiiM. in other words, that the tue sian revolution is entirely led and controlled by Jews, which is another tvident lie. . No one will deny that among the bolshevik leaders there are many Drominent Jews. Trotsky-Bronstein being the most conspicuous example. They are. however, in the minority and do not control the situation, Thus the bolshevik: cabinet consists at the present moment of 17 members, of whom Trotskv alone is a Jew; the others are all 100 per cent Russians amonsr them Lenine: Chicherin, the foreign minister; Bubarln; Bykof; Krassin, the famous London repre sentative; Kalinin, president of the central soviet. Lenine, whose real name is the purely Kussian Oolianof. beiongs to a Russian squire family of the province of Bimblrek. his ances tors having been for generations in the Russian provincial government service. Among the numerous bol shevik commissars, or officials, the Jews are by no means in the major ity; the Russians outnumber them everywhere. Besides, there are many officials belonging to other national ities Poles, Magyars. Letts, etc. As a matter of fact, there even de veloped lately among certain bolshe vik elements a violent anti-Jewisb feeling. This is the case, for in stance, with the so-called extraordi nary commission, which is at the head the bolshevik secret police. Tnls commission has unlimited powers for tne prosecution of political crimes and is responsible- for most of the bolshevik reign of terror. It is di rected by three men, none of whom is a Jew. one being a Pole (the most cruel Djerzinsky) and the two others being Letts. They lately professed to have, discovered a Zionist plot at Mos cow, directed against the bolaheviki; in consequence 75 persons were ar rested for their anti-soviet activi ties and for their correspondence with the western powers and repre sentatives of Kolchak and Denikine. Surely If the bolsheviki were led ex clusively by Jews, such happenings would have been absolutely impossible. Though the secretary of war, Trot sky, is a Jew, his general staff, con sisting of 20 members, is composed exclusively of non-Jews. This Is also the case with many bolshevik minis tries, filled with Russian Gentile officials. On the other hand, vastly more Russian Jews of the most representa tive tyoe were and still are devotedly fighting bolshevism and suffering all sorts and manners of persecutions. One can find them among the promi nent leaders of all the anti-bolshevik political parties. The Menhseviki and socialist-revolutionaries, who are among the bitterest enemies of bol shevism, have very many Jews in their ranks; for example, Martof, Lle ber, Dan, Chernof, Bunakof. Minor, Berkenhelm, Zelheim and many oth ers. PROPAGANDA OF HATRED HELD TO BE AIMED AGAINST JEWS Ancient Accusations, Branded as Lies, Revived in So-called "The Protocols and World Revolution, Declares Baron S. A. Korff. BT BARON S. A. KORFF, LL. D.. Formerly Vice-Governor of Finland. Reprinted From the Ontrook. . NTI- SEMITIC propaganda has A ereatly increased of late In the J TT.i.-j soles. Among other things, there has been assiduously spread a pamphlet entitled "The Pro tocols and World Revolution." .said to be the minutes of meetings, some where in Switserland. of "Zionist Men of Wisdom." and .ccompanied by detailed commentaries of a certain To Ncasual reader this pamphlet might seem unspeakably stupid a concoction devised by blooming idiots who want to play a bad joke on the credulous public. Unfortunately, clos er examination reveals a deeper mean ing of an insidious propaganda of hatred against Jews, basedvun false hoods and misrepresentations of a most dangerous kind. These protocols are no new thing. They were made use of In the past for many vears bv Russian reactionaries and po"lice officials. Their first ap pearance dates back to 1901, when the Czar s government was uuij nn mnnsr the Russian people feelings of hatred against the Je;s, hoping to divert the nation's attenuon irom me increasing social discoiftent. Many horrible pogroms were the awful con sentiences Of this policy. These documents reappeared later, m the time of the revolutionary troa bles of 1903,. with the evident purpose of putting the whole blame on the .Towish race. Finally, in 1919, these ulvm.J, .u II'-",- - and rewritten in order to meet cer tain criticism and new conditions, were again circulated, first in Ger many and later in England, by a group of Russian and German reac tionaries clustering around the edi torial offices of a small Russian pa per called the "Sunbeam," published in Berlin. During the autumn of 1920 these protocols were reprinted In Boston and sent around to different people in the United States. In the former editions the editor or author, Serge Nilus, was called chamberlain of the Czar, professor and marshal of nobility; but, as it was easily proved that the lists or chamberlains, pro fessors and marshals never mentioned such a name, these alleged titles were dropped in the American' edition. This man, seemingly, was a minor police official in Moscow, employed by the gendarmes of the Czar for the spe cial purpose of disseminating antl- bemitic propaganda. Protocol Story Old. The story told In the protocols la a very old one. dating back several cen turies and reviving ancient accusa tions against the Jews, who were said to be intending to conquer the world and avenge themselves on the Gen tiles for the centuries of persecution, similar stories were very popular 4n the 17th and 18th centuries. In the middle of the 19th century there also was a period of intense anti-Jewish propaganda in Germany, started in the year 1868 by a man called Her mann Goedsche. A well-known English writer, Luclen Wolf, has exposed recently (in a let ter to the London Spectator, dated June II. 1920, the striking" similari ties which exist between the argu ments of Nilus and those of Goedsche, and which prove conclusively their common origin. These documents have done Im measurable harm in Russia, as they were widely circulated In the Kol chak and Denikine armies and helped (their ultimate disintegration. One of the most patent lies spreae by the protocols is tne assertion that the Jews never repudiated or denied the statements contained therein, thus tacitly acknowldging their authen- Jews Individually and through their organizations have repeatedly un covered these falsehoods. There was published not long ago in the United States, for instance, a detailed pro test, signed by a number of the most influential Jewish organiza tionsnamely, the American Jewish committe, the Zionist Organization of America, the Union of American He brew Congregations, the Union of Or thodox Jewish Congregations, the United Synagogues of America, the provisional committee for an Ameri can Jewish congress, the Independent Order of B'nai B'rith, the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the Rabbinical Assembly of the Jewish Theological seminary and the United Orthodox Jewish Rabbis of America. iney ail solemnly assert that there never existed any secret organization called the "Zionist Men of Wisdom," which is supposed to have planned the conquest of the world through bolshevik revolutions and wholesale murders of the Gentiles. The English representative Jews have also published a forcible protest. signea oy men like Kothschild, Mac nus, Samuel, Cohen, Monash and many utile rs (see the London Morning Post, April 23, 1919), confirming the same denial of the existence of such a con splracy. Plot Held Disclosed. It is alleged that the protocols dis close the existence of a Jewish plot for the establishment of the domina tion of the world by t,he Jewish race. Tne Russian DoisneviK experiment. accomplished through the influence CAMPAIGN WINKER CROWNED KI.VG OF CHl'RC'H. r t7 -liillS f-fiWH riifii-if LtiiM I V J. A. Wisdom. J. A. Wisdom, 1512 Union ave nue, who as a result of his In dividual efforts raised $592 to enlarge the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal church, was crowned "king" of the church recently when the re sults of the campaign were an nounced. A total of $3597 was raised as a result of the campaign and the amount obtained by Mr. Wisdom was far in excess of that turned in by any other individual. The team which he commanded also surpassed the record - of all other teams by turning In contributions amounting to $692. Work of en larging the church will be started In the spring, it was announced. One can Judge of the way the false hood about the Jewish leadership of bolshevism is spread by the misstate ments in the list given by Dr. Simons to the senate Overman committee, re orinted on page 79 of the protocols and showing how little Simons under stood the Russian revolutionary movement Among the "most impor tant bolshevik leaders" he mentioned the names of Chernof, Dan. Parvus and Lieber, three of them having been violently opposed to bolshevism, and he fourth. Parvus, being simply a German agent in the employment of the Berlin secret police. The constitutional democrats, nsu ally called "cadets. the prorqmen Russian liberal party, also count manv Jews among their ranks: for instance, Vinaver (chairman of thel central committee), Sliosberg. Pasma ink. Kamlnka, Landau, Friedman, Hessen and many others. All of them oerslstently fought bolshevism and urderwent all sorts of hardships and certainly represent the Russian Jews much better than the few bolshevik leaders of Jewish origin. Charge Is Exploded. If we could suppose for a momen that such a secret organization as the "Zionist Men of Wisdom" did ex ist, there arises the question, whom did it represent? Certainly not the JewiBh race as such, because the best type of Jews, the most influential and prominent, have always unanimously denied the existence ot tne organiza tion and vehemently repudiated Its alleged alms, at great cost to them selves, too, as nanyi of these Jews suffered personally from the bolshe viki. Bolshevism, as a communlBtlc the ory, is very repugnant to tne jews, who value greatly the idea or per sonal property. The communistic principle, denying private property. alone would suffice to estrange the Jews from the bolshevik revolution ary movement. Unfortunately, we know only too w.Il at the present day that bolshev :sm is a social process or disease, If ore likes to call It so, that developed among the Russian people. It is gen uinely Russian, and not in any way "created" from the outside by Jews or Germans. I say "unfortunately" on purngse; It would have been so much easier to fight bolshevism if it were an artificially created disturbance. Seme of the snti-bolshevlk move ments would have succeeded long ago in putting bolshevism down if the lat ter had been the handiwork of a few fanatical Jews. Failure Held1 Evident. The protocols charge that the Jews desire to dominate the world; they disclose even a whole "strategic plan for united action of the Jews as a na tlon or a people." If such an Insane plan ever did exist, one must admit at present that it utterly failed. There never was any "united action" of the Jews, as most of their race and all of their organizations and best men have Invariably repudiated even the mere thought of such an action. They all are unconditionally opposed to bolshevism and to the Moscow gov ernment, as I -have already indicated. In no way did bolshevism or the Rus sian revolution succeed in establish ing a "Jewish domination over the world." On the contrary, it helped to foster anti-Jewish feelings. And it is a noteworthy fact that so many prominent Jews take an active part in this fight. The nnonvmitv of the protocols, as wen i at all anti-Semitic propaganda, stands out in glaring contrast in this respect. How could the domination of th world ever be achieved by anonymous writers or unknown organizations If such Jewish organizations did really exist and did plan the conquest of the Gentile world, how could they continue to keep hiding behind the veil of anonymity? Would not they and their names have been known to thA nntide world: Ana wnat reaso would the bolsheviki, and Trotsky, their irreatest cvnlc. have still to lrppn this extraordinary secret, espe cially if these Jewish conspirators . a the Drotocols assure us, so v.rv rnnfidnt of their ultimate vie torv? Numerous statesmen during these last decades foresaw and pre rtloteil Korrial disturbances. This was nnt difficult, considering tne many sisrns of coming troubles which were .vii,nt in dtfferent countries. Ana much Is probably still to happen all over the world. The point would be. hnwever. to Drove that, when such oriseji came, tne jews creaiea uiem, These proofs are never given, ana ror ,n s mole reason mey ao noi rtat. The THE VALUE OF CHARCOAL Few Pronle Know How Turfa! It Is in P.-eservlncr Health and Heauty, Kenrlv evervbodv knows that char coal is the rafest and most efficient disinfectant and puWfier in nature, hut few -ealize its valu6 when taken nto the human system lor tne same cleansing purpose. Charcoal is a remedy that the more vou take of It the better: it is not a drug at all, but simply absorbs the gases and impurities always present in the stomach and intestines and carries them out of the system. fThnrrr?l s-weetenn the -reath after smoking and after eating onions md other odorous veeetaDies. Charcoal effectually clears and lm proves the complexion, it whitens the teeth and further acts as a natural and eminently safe cathartic Tt absorbs the injurious gases which collect in the stomach and bowels: it disinfects the mouth anc" throat from the poisdn of catarrh. All drue-e-ists sell charcoal In one form or another, but probably the best harcoal and the .:ost for the money Is in Stuart's Charcoal Lozenges; they are composed of the finest powdered Willow charcoal, and other harmless ntiseptics in tablet form or rather In the form ejf large, pleasant tasting lozenges, the charcoal being mixed with honey. The daily use of these lozenges will soon tell In a much lmprovea conai tion of the general health, better com plexion, sweeter breath and purer blood, and the beauty of it is, that no possible harm can result from their continued use. but op the con trary, great benefit. A Buffalo physician, ip speaking' of the benafits of charcoal, says: "I ad vise Stuart's Charcoal Lozenges to all patients suffering from gas in stom ach and bowels, and to clear the com plexion and purify the breath, mouth and throat; I also believe the liver is greatly benefited by tte daily use of them; they cost but twenty-five cents a box at drug stores, and al though In some sense a patent prepa ration, yet I believe I get more and i better charcoal in Stuart's Charcoal ' Lozenges iian in any of the ordinary charcoal tablets." Adv. pogroms of central Europe are notori ous. The czar's government has done a good deal to keep up a feeling of hatred against the Jews among the Russian people. All this sufficiently explain the fact . that many Jews have a strong feeling of resentment against the Gentiles. Trotsky proba bly Is the best example. ,Xt is quite likely that in his psychology there Is a strong desire for vengeance. But how can this in any way prove that the Jews in general want to conquer the world? The Jews invariably are the first to suffer from the attempts at destruction of the existing social orders they always are the f'rst ones to lose their property and to forfeit their estates. Charge Called Lie. Further, the insinuation in the so ca.'led protocols that bolshevism or Jewish domination has anything to do with Masonry or the 33d degree of in tlation is another malicious He. In former days the rhnrch, especially the Catholic church, laid many sins at the doors of Freemasonry. Similar accusations are now brought for ward in the case of bolshevism. Free mosonry never had anything to do with bolshevism, which is not a po litical action, but a deep-seated so cial process. We have no proofs wnatever of Masonic organizations taking part in bolshevik upheaval. Freemasonry is a very conservative force, and counts among Its ranks most prominent citizens, kings and prime ministers of England and 1.1 presidents of the United States, Washington included. Is it plausible to suppose that all these prominent Masons never knew of the Jewish Zionist plans to conquer the world in conjunction with their organization? Or. were they possibly fooled by clever Jewish leaders? This is sure ly asking too much of the credulous public The whol story of the protocols i would really be a husre joke if Its I implications were not so tragic and its consequences so dangerous to the Gentiles themselves. There Is noth ing worse than arousing feelinxs of hatred. Every honest and patriotic citizen must in every possible way endeavor to combat this insidious anti-Semftlc propaganda. One single thought in the proto cols, however, deserves attention and comment, namely, "that it is vitally necessary that the American Jews fhould by worl and dwed express their condemnation not only of bolshevism, but of any plan or programme for world domination" (page 140). The need of such a protest Is evident and pressing; it would help Immensely the' fight against this social scourge. The Jews have protested already many times, but must persevere In their efforts to combat bolshevism In every possible way. Phons your want ads to The Ore- gonlan. Main 7070, Automatic 660-95.
