Bechill ware hostesses at luncheon on Tuesday at Mrs. Radell's home, 1188 Taggart street. Mrs. Morton will be here for some time visiting her mother, Mrs. J. H. Free. A number of delightful affairs are begin given in her honor. Mr. Seitz has been the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Dant. She left for California Wednesday and will sail for China soon. Dr. and Mrs. bandford Whiting, ac companied by Mr. and Mrs. K. L. Webster and Mrs. B. L. Gates of Seat tle, left the first of the week, for New York, contemplating sailing on the Imperator for Europe September 9. While away Dr. Whiting will attend surgical clinics In the east and Europe. Mrs. John Claire Monteith, who is pending the. summer in southern uaitiornta with her parents, will re turn to Portland early in September, at which time she and Mr. Monteith will make a short motor trip to the sound cities. Announcement is made of the en gagement of Miss Slgrid Elizabeth Olsen of Providence, R. L, to Pierre M. Baldwin of Portland. Miss Luclle M. Broderick has re turned to Portland after a year's visit in the east. . Mm. Harry King Smith (Id Ran ay) left last week for Plymouth, N. H., where ehe will join her hus band. She will stop for a short visit with relatives in Wichita, Kan. She Is accompanied by her niece, Miss Aline Davis, who . ill make her home with her. y Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Crlssel have returned to Portland after a month's trip to Mew York and other eastern cities. Miss 'Margaret Williamson, daugh ter of J. A. Williamson, has left for California to visit friends and rela tives in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego. Mrs. Eugene Anderson and her two daughters of Kankakee, '111., are the guests of Mrs. Anderson's sister, Mrs. J. S. Hammack. They are now at Gearhart for a two weekB' visit. - . The Misses Madeleine and Gladyce Barrette have - returned from a trip to Seattle, Victoria and the San Juan and islands. A number of teas luncheons were given in their honor I while they were on. their trip. Mrs Frank L. Maynard and Mrs. J. T. Quigley entertained with a farewell dancing party at Mrs. Quigley'd home at Seaola, near Seattle, in their honor. Congratulations are being received by Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Freed upon the -birth of a son, born Wednesday afternoon. He will be named Fred erick A. Freed. Mrs. Freed will be remembered as Miss Elise Oberdorfer. Miss Irene Campbell, who have been visiting in Victoria and Vancouver, B. C, and Seattle, Wash., returned to their home in Portland this week. a Flower and messages of congratu lation are finding their way to Mr. and BIrs. Fred H. Carlstrom (Flor ence Hoesch) of Oak Point, wasn., upon the arrival of a baby daughter, who will be known as Pauline feophia. The little girl arrived on Sunday, August 15. Harold Hurlburt, acoompanled by Mrs. Hurlburt and baby, sailed August 13 from New York for Europe. Mr. Hurlburt recently presented in New York a vocal course based on a book he wrote in this city wnich was in dorsed by music critics and grand opera singers. He intends to present this course in Paris, Milan and other will musio centers. The Hurlburta pass several months in Italy. a Miss Annie Blancho Shelby, who has been spending the summer in Victoria. B. C. Is plannii.g to return in time ,lo be present in Albany, September 6. at the sacerdotal silver jubilee and in vestiture as protonotary apostolic ad lnstar of her cousin. Rev. Arthur Lane. Miss Blanche Edlefsen and S. H. Graf of Corvallis were married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Edlefsen. on Willamette Mrs. Max Friedenthal and her two daughters, the M'-ses Hanita and Maxine Friedenthr.L will leave short ly for California, where they will spend the winter. Reed, while there and to Portland about Sep- Mlss Helen Louise Lamar, daughter Of Mr. and Mrs. C Walter Lamar, and , Ira Francis Berkey were married Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock at the Fourth Presbyterian church. The church was artistically decorated with autumn leaves, golden rod and golden glow. Sylvester Wilhelm sang ''Until" and Miss Alice Johnson played the wedding march. The bride was attractive in a sown of white crepe satin with pearl trimming. Her veil of net was caught with orange blossoms and she car ried a shower bouquet of Cecil Brun ner roses and white sweet peas. Miss Helen Von Cleff was maid of honor and the Misses Elizabeth Werren, of Portland, and Mildred Rose Conn, of Butte, Mont., were bridesmaids. They wore pink net over white silk and carried pink asters. Little Dahrl La mar was ring bearer and Jean Lamar was flower girl. Edward Humphrey of Corvallia was best man. After the ceremony, a reception was given at the home of the bride's par ents. Assisting about the rooms were Mrs. Paul Lamar, Esther Bodraan and Margaret Kubli. After a trip to the beaches, Mr. and Mrs. Berkey will make their home in Portland. - a a a Miss Esther Merrill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred T. Merrill of Portland, and Sheldon R. Coons were married Wednesday afternoon. Their wedding was a surprise to their many friends Mrs. Coons is a graduate of St. Helen's Hall. Mr. Coons, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph D. Coons of Wilkesbarre, Pa., was in Portland a year ago as an advertising manager. After a trip through California and the east Mr. and Mrs. Coons will make their home in New York City, a a Mrs. Lawrence A. Lambert and two children, who have been spending the summer in Calgary, Canada, the guests of Mrs Lambert's mother, Urs.B Maxwell Bilton, have returned to Portland, They were joined at Van couver, by Mr. Lambert and the fam ily passed some time at English Bay, Vancouver, B. C. a a a Mrs. Robert D. Inman and daughter Alta are spending a few weeks at the St. Francis hotel, San Francisco, be fore leaving for New York, where Miss Alta will resume her studies. a a a Miss Katherine S. Arnold, a former Portland girl, is the house guest of Mrs. H. H. Northup. She is a gradu ate of Mount- Holyoke and has bean a member of the faculty for several years at Downer college, Milwaukee, Wis. She has been the inspiration for much informal entertaining during her visit here. Mrs. Northup was hostess for a tea in her honor on Tuesday afternoon. About 60 of Miss Arnold's friends called during the afternoon. Mrs. Will Northup and Mrs. Harry Northup presided at the tea table.
