taken" to Oregon City tomorrow to
be arraigned on charges of murder.
Thin was announced late yesterday
after, the place of the murder was
defiikVly fixed as near Boardman
station about two miles this side of
UreRon City and in Clackamas county.
Moore, one of the two youths

over 'the. scene of the crime yesterday
afterrrnon and he reiterated to of
ficials..every detail of the murder Of
the tsii driver. He told again how
!n a'lonely spot in the road near
Boai ilman station they had stopped
the car and he had left on some er
rand. Again he related how his com
panion had twice slugged the un
suspecting driver from behind with
the automobile chains.
Body Dropped From Brldsre.
He v told how he had returned to
the machine and assisted his com
panion in putting the body in the
rear of the car. Therf-he showed The

son City from which the body was
dropped Into the Willamette river. i
"I don't know whether he was dead
fr not when we threw him into the
river," said Moore. "He was uncon
Brious and didn't seem to breathe, but

said.
Under the direction of Sheriff Wil
son, efforts to find the body of Harry
Dubintsky were started at Oregon
City, but up to a late hour last night
the .search had been unsuccessful.
After Moore had told where the
body was thrown from the bridge,
several grapplers were sent out in
the hope that the body might be re
covered. The work is rendered ex
tremely difficult, however, owing to
the large number of eddies and the
strong current. At the point where
iho body was thrown over the water
is said to be SO feet deep.
Moore was taken over the scene of
the crime by Lieutenant Goltz. In
spector - Hellyer, District Attorney
F.vans, of Portland, and Sheriff Wil
ton and District Attorney Hedges, of
OreKon City. After it was definitely
learned that the crime had occurred
in Clackamas county arrangements
were made by Portland officials to
turn the two prisoners over to the
Clackamas county officials Monday.
Until that time, it was announced,
the two will be held in the county
Jail here.
Trip I'.at Planned.
Moore continued to hold yesterday
to the story told following his arrest
Friday night that the taxi driver was
lain that the two might take his car
and take their girl friends out joy
riding. He said they had also planned
on taking a trip east to see Brake's
I elatlves.
Lieutenant Goltz, who, with Lieu
tenant Moloney and Captain Circle,
headed the investigation which re
sulted in the arrest of the two lads
Hnd ;the clearing up of tho mystery
surrounding the disappearance of
Harry Dubinsky, said late yesterday
that lie was satisfied that the youths
had no other motive than the theft of
the machine. He said it was also
Apparent to him that Moore was now
telling the truth about the case.

A -letter which had been written by
Brake to his parents, but which had
not yet been addressed, was also dis
covered in his effects. The letter told
a Morv of his attentions to a girl who
he said was the daughter of a wealthy
government official here. He said
that: .the srirl's brother had given him
m ca.r and that he intended going east

Death Penalty Expected.
Police are of the opinion that this
letter was written with the Intention
of allaying suspicion on the part of
the .lad's relatives in the east when
he should arrive there with the car
of tho murdered driver.
Moore had lost his previous nerv
outness yesterday ana naa put on a
ort of stoical attitude.

Brake continued yesterday to main
tain his attitude of silence when
questioned relative to the murder of
Dubinsky. He declared lie - knew
nothing about the disappearance of
the -driver. W ith a smile and a con
tempuous life of the head he faced
the inspectors and declined to im
plicate himself in the murder.
Brabt Still Reserved.
"I'll tell what I know when the time
comes," he told Lieutenant Goltz with
a smile yesterday. "I'll tell my story
to tne judge," he continued.
This, however, was the nearest to a
confession that he would come. In
pitef of the fact that he had been
confronted with the confession of
Moore, who admitted the facts of .the
killing in his presence.
When Moore was led out of the
room following his confession in his
pal's presence. Brake smiled a chal
lenge to the Inspectors to get him to
confess.
The confession of Moore and the
other evidence collected indicates
that; Brake was the stronger willai
one of the two and that Moore did
as his companion told him. The two
said, they had been companions frorn
the time they met in Oregon City
while working In the paper mills
there three months ago.
Inspectors said last night that no
further effort would be made to get
a confession from Brake.
It was said that the two men might

their arraignment at Oregon City.
There -will probably be some delay
until the trial can be started and
during that time- the officials con
sider that the prisoners would be
safer in jail here.- I
Brake gave his' age. as 20 years
when he was bookfed on a charge of
murder at the police station. Idoore
said he was 19. Both men gave their
occupation as that of laborer.
The two prisoners are immaculately
clad. Moore explained a small mark
on his forehead by saying he had cut
himself there while shaving his eye
brows down. Brake carried a powder
puff when arrested.
Girl May Get Reward.
Police are of the opinion that the
greater portion of the reward of $1000
which was offered for the recovery of
the body of Dubinsky should go to
Miss Bertha Shodahl, 521 Irving street,
who gave the information leading to
the clearing up of the mystery. It
was announced yesterday that the
paying of the reward would probably
be made by a commission appointed
by the mayor to prevent any dispute
over the matter.
"I am not sure that I would accept
the reward, if it was offered me,"
said Miss Shodahl. who Is employed
in the office of John C. Shillock, at
torney, yesterday. "1 considered that
I was doing my duty in giving the
authorities what I knew."
"At that I didn't think such a thing
possible of Brake," she said.
Meetings Said to Be Frequent.
Miss Shodahl and her chum. Miss
Winnie Peterson, who is employed in
an establishment in the Pittock block.
first met Brake when they were out
strolling one Sunday afternoon. Later
he seemed to become quite attached
to Miss Shodahl and often called at
her home.
Miss Shodahl told of how Brake
called for her in the car last Sunday
morning before she was dressed and
how he waited for her and took her
out for a ride. She also told of no
ticing the blood in the machine which
he declared to be oil.
In the evening of the same day
after he had abandoned the machine
down town, Brake called at the Sho
dahl home. He was without the
machine although he had previously
promised to take her out in the car.
Miss Shodahl said that Brake told
conflcting stories when he called that
evening.
"At first." she said, "he told me he
had had a blowout and for that rea
son was unable to bring the car.
Later he said that he had discovered
that he got the machine from a couple
of crooks. He told of hearing a rumor
that a man had been killed in a
machine and was afraid his was the
one."
Girl Gives Information.
Brake also told Miss Shodahl that
he was afraid to bring the car out
because he had seen a man in it.
This fits in with the story told by
Moore, who said that he and Brake
returned twice for the automobile
after it had been abandoned. The
first time he said that they saw it
was watched and the second time
there were a number of policemen
about it.
When Miss Shodahl read the story
in the newspapers of the disappear
ance of Harry Dubinsky and his sup
posed murder, she told what she knew
of Brake's new machine to her mo
ther and brother. They insisted that

his father come west to exonerate
him.
Car Held as Evidence.
He had previously said his father
had sent him the money to purchase
the machine as a birthday present.
Miss Shodahl said that she had only
refrained from telling the authorities
what she knew by her desire to wait
for the arrival of Brake's father.
When Brake took Miss Shodahl out
in the murder car last Sunday she
said that she suggested a ride to Ore
gon City. Brake. however, made
some excuse and took her out through
Laurelhurst.
The murder car with its tell-tale
blood stains has been stored in the
city garage. Lieutenant Maloney an
nounced last night that it would be
held as evidence in the case. After
wards it will be turned over to
Dubinsky's relatives.
County Clerk Takes Wife.
Asa W. Battles of Prineville, county
clerk of Crook county, ostensibly In
Portland on a business trip, was
quietly married yesterday morning
in this city to Miss Leola "Estes of
Prineville, who is teaching school
in Portland. William B. Kollett, state
commander of the American Legion,
was best man. Mr. Battles is a mem
ber of the department executive com
mittee of the legion. -The ceremony
was performed by Rev. Van Cleve,
formerly of Prineville.
Industrial Club Meets.
ROSEBURG Or., June 19. (Spe
cial.) The first union industrial club
meeting to be held in Douglas county
took place in the high school build-
ng here today. The meeting was
called for the purpose of allowing
the club leaders and members to meet
Miss Gertrude Warren of Washing
ton. D. C, assistant national club
leader, who is making a tour for the
purpose of visiting the various indus
trial clubs of the state.
Alleged Distiller Arrested.
Richrad Walter, 805 Morris street
Sellwood gardens, was arrested yes-

distilling plant on the premises.

plans are under way for the basket
picnic and celebration which the rail
road men of western Oregon- will
stage In Albany on Monday, July 5.

The celebration will be held in Bry

cial.) Herbert Hoover has promised
to visit Washington to speak in behalf
of the republican ticket. This was
the announcement made today by Ouy
E. Kelly, republican national commit
teeman, who returned to Tacoma from

rangements with Mr. Hoover to speak
here during the campaign." said Mr.
Kelly. "No dates have been set as
yet. but Mr. Hoover is groins right

ily on the symmetrical crown of
Mount St. Helens?
Portland lovers of the towering
peaks that stand sentinel over the
Columbia basin yesterday centered
their gait on the snow-capped emi
nence of northern Skamania county
and noticed that for the first time
they could view the- sunshine inside
the great crater.
Mountain-loving citizens whose at
tention was called to the changed
appearance of the great white cone
yesterday were inclined to think that
a piece of the rim has broken away,
as quite a decided notch is observ
able from the distance of this city.
There appears to be a sharp and pro
nounced peak on the eastern side of
the rim. where before it was a con
tinuous smooth cap. 'Also, there are
two ridges visible on the eastern
slope a little below the apparent
notch, and it is the opinion of one
observer who studied the mountain
closely yesterday with the aid of a
powerful glass .that the crumbling
rim fell to the outside in a slide-underneath
the glacial capt which now,
with the meltlnpr of the outward crust.

BERRIES AT PEAK PRICE
Vancouver Offerings Held for 14
Cents Per "Pound.
VANCOUVER, -Wash..'- June 19.
(Special.) Strawberries are bringing
the unheard-of price of 14 cents a
pound, wholesale, this price being
paid by the Oregon Packing com
pany. The rain of the past week
has been unfavorable for the crop,
but tho last few days sunshine is
ripening them rapidly. Indications
are that the canneries will not buy
too heavily of the berry crop this
year, as sugar is so scarce.
While cherries will be plentiful and
are beginning to. ripen, it appears
that they will not be so large as
usual, owing perhaps to the cold
spring weather.

The Bank, of Italy, ol San Francisco,
has no present Intention of establish
ing a branch In Portland and rumors
to that effect circulated locally at
various times were without any
foundation in fact, according to L M.
MacDonald, assistant to the presi
dent of that financial house, who came
up from San Francisco to attend the
convention of the Oregon Bankers'
association at Eugene this week. He
came on to Portland where he spent

of Italy and Mr. MacDonald said that
the situation is so satisfactory that
the California bank has no need to
expand to this city.
ASTORIA BANKS MERGED
New Institution to Have Deposits
of More Than $4,000,000.
ASTORIA, Or., June 19. (Special.)
Consolidation was effected today of
the Astoria National bank and the
Scandinavian - American bank. The
new institution will be known as the
Astoria National bank and it will
occupy the Scandinavian bank build- ;
ing, which is to be remodeled and in-;
creased to five stories. The capital
stock of the Astoria National bank is
to be $400,000, with a surplus of S0.
000, while the Columbia Trust &
Savings bank, an auxiliary institution,
will have a capital stock of $100,000
and a $5000 surplus. The combined
deposits of the two Institutions are
in excess of $4,000,000.
While the officers will not be elect
ed until some time next coming week,
it is understood that George W.
Warren will be president and John E.
Wicks, vice-pfesldent. The active
officers of the bank will be C.t R,
Higgins. J. M. Anderson and W. A,
Tyler.
