WASHINGTON". March 10. The enormous and growing importance of the motor truck in the economy of farm management is brought out striklngrly in a report by the depart ment of agriculture of a survey of the ownership and use of motor trucks by farmers. The survey was conducted jointly by the office of farm management and the bureau of crop estimates of the department. The in formation secured by this inquiry an swers many questions which have been asked repeatedly regarding the extent to which motor vehicles are used for farm hauling. The figrures on which totals for the nation and the several states are based were secured from approxi mately 35.000 selected crop reporters who were asked to report the names and addresses of farmers they knew who own motor trucks for farm us. Pleasure cars and trailers for use with pleasure cars were excluded and the reporters were asked not to take account of trucks which are used pri marily for general custom hauling or on regularly established routes. This survey, the department of ag riculturo says, can hardly be consid ered a complete census, for it Is proh able that in some localities tho crop reporters were not acquainted with all the truck owners, but it is certain that a very large per cent have been listed. It is believed that in no state were less than 75 per cent of the trucks reported. If not complete in every respect, the figures show the relative distribution very satisfac torily. At least B&.000 farmers in the United States own motor trucks which they use on their farms. "It is best to drain the oil from the crankcase, rinse the case with kerosene and refill with oil suit able for warm-weather driving. Rinse the radiator by opening the drain and turning a stream of water through It, then fill with clean water. "It is advisable also to have your battery inspected. Spark plugs should be tested and faulty onea discarded. "After the engine runs well there Is a temptation to let everything else po. But such matters as dragging brakes may absorb power and con tinue to do. so all season without at tracting attention. Hence It is wise to test for such trouble. With the car on jacks turn one wheel to see if the brake drags. Then try the other. If either or both drag the brakes should immediately be adjusted. "Tires should be examined for minor cuts and bruises. Slight repairs now may save large bills later. Begin the season by having your tires prop erly inflated and keep them so." went out in the garden and picked them. The snowbound inhabitants of Ohio and northern Michigan were treated to a pleasing sight as well as to a new record-breaking feat recently, when 600 Buick valve-ln-head motor cars plowed their way through the heavy drifted roads from Flint, Mich. This single day drive-away of Buick cars was not only a new achieve ment in factory deliveries, but was one of the most fortunate things that could have happened In the opening of blockaded traffic conditions, which under ordinary methods would have taken many days to accomplish. The bliszard which swept this district for two days was the worst storm ex perienced in the past two years, par alyzing traffic conditions in every direction. As fast as the snow fell a 50-mile-an-hour wind rapidly filled the highway with heavy drifts rang ing In depth from two to five feet. Road commissioners and farmers found the use of graders and snow plows worthless and were finally compelled to give away to the ef ficiency, power and endurance of the motor car. Headed by several pilot cars fur nished by the factory, this fleet of Buick cars successfully accomplished the task of breaking the first trails into Detroit and northern Ohio towns and restoring traffic to Its normal condition. This 600-car drive-away is so far the largest single overland delivery In the history of .the Buick Motor company, and will probably establlsll a national record for all manufac turers. Keep out of car tracks. 281 STOLEN, 34 RECOVERED California's New Anti-Thief Plan Not Vet in Working Order. SACRAMENTO. March 20. C. a Morrill, state superintendent of the bureau of criminal identification and investigation, announced recently that 281 automobiles were stolen in Cali fornia in February. This was a drop of 100 under January's total. Recoveries for the month were be low normal, totaling only 11 machines. Morrill explains this circumstance by the fact that the bureau for the past several weeks has been busily engaged installing -a new checking system. Under the new system that has bees. Installed, said Morrill, 31 stolen automobiles have been recovered al ready this month. One of these ma chines was found abandoned in the streets of Oakland before its owner, a Fresno clergyman, had reported the theft to the authorities. CASCADE GARAGE PURCHASED C. A. Elliott and C. C.
