Loyalty to America means "loyalty to her chosen servants, from Dresident down." Bain bridge Colby, named as secretary state, declared tonight in an address at a "loyalty week" meeting in the city hall. General John J. Pershing also spoke on Americanism and pa- triotism. "We must stifle the voice of hatred and friction." added Mr. Colby. "We must realize that there is not a man in America who does not hold office as a result of the free choice of her citizens. It is a high patriotic duty that we should support and sustain the men who .have been placed in po sitions of difficulty, burden, responsi bility and even danger as the result of our suffrage. "An intelligent and conscientious opposition is a part of loyalty to coun try, but we must not. if we are loyal. seek to disperse our energies in s partisan warfare that Is waged with out regard to its consequences to the well-being, security or honor of the country." "We must look to this right promptly." he added, "it is a condition that must not be suffered to con tinue." Illiterates Declared Danger. In traveling about the country visit ing the various army; cantonments. General Pershing declared in his ad dress that he had found "in the people the purest sort of patriotism," but "they have allowed a certain amount of ignorance to grow up." He said that this is a "dangerous thing," and must be eradicated. "When the draft act was put into effect," he continued, "there was found to be about 25 to 30 per cent of illiteracy in the country. Now this number of illiteratesis too great for our safety. "I would insist that the English language be learned here in a given length of time. "We can remedy conditions through education by communities, each com munity must be self-cleansing, self' purging. "The greatest work America can do in the world Is to make herself truly American. When that is accomplished then we can exert the greatest pos sible Influence on the other people of the world." What . Univer sity of Washington defeated Unlver sity of California at basketball here tonight by a score or 29 to zs. cook. Washington guard and acting captain, making the winning point on a free throw after five minutes of overtime play. The game was the last of a two-game series. California won last night, 22 to 17. Accurate basket shooting featured the play of both quintets, and both teams checked closely throughout the game. At the end of the first half Washington led, 14 to 12. SAND STORM IS ANNOYING Clouds Hang: Over Oregon Shore, Which Is Hidden From Vancouver. VANCOUVEK. Wash.. Feb. 28. (Special.) .The strong east wind. began early yesterday, continued all day, all last night and all day today. The sand storm on Columbia Beach on Hayden Island continued so that ' it was impossible for persons living on the Washington side to see across the Columbia river. Across the two long fills .between Portland and the Co lumbia rfver interstate bridge the sand has been deposited on the west side to a depth of several inches in places. X The wind has caused considerable trouble on the telephone lines. There is much sickness and the old -timers are praying for an old time warm spring rain. H. G. DURAND RETURNS Connection Between Trip East and Postal Upheaval Denied. Harry G. Durand. who resigned as assistant postmaster as 'one phase of the upheaval that ousted Frank, S. Myers from the postmastership. re turned last night from a trip to New York. Mr. Durand left town soon after resigning, and it was reported that his trip had some connection with the posloffice situation. He de clined to admit this last night. say- Howard Adams, 21, Arrested. Howard Adams, 21, was arrested at Tenth and Stark streets last night by Inspectors' Collins and Coleman and charged with larceny of several articles of Jewelry and clothing from Mrs. H. Niss. who lives in the Tour ney building;. Second Taylor streets. Th police say some of the stolen property was found in the prisoner's possession. The theft occurred Feb ruary 27. v Woman Falls Five Stories. SEATTLE, Wash, Feb. SS. Mrs. E. F. Hunnicut, iJ years old. of Monroe, Wah., was taken to a hospital here tonight suffering from a fractured skull and other injuries sustained when she fell five stories down aa elevator shaft in the Cobb building here today.
