CHILDREN'S DIET BETTER Many Families Double OrIor to Give Proper Food to Tts; School Statistics Tabulated. When the Oregon dairy council, the teachers and club women inter ested in the subject of child welfare in. Oregon discovered that one-fifth of the school children of Portland were getting no milk in their regu lar diet, they viewed the situation with alarm and straightway com menced active work to raise the per centages of milk-users. As a con sequence In many districts the boys and girls now receive at least a pint of milk a day and many families have doubled their milk order. As the survey progresses through out the state it is found that in the rural districts many echools report one-third of the children are with out milk as a part of their diet. I" More General. Dr. D. W. Mack, chief dairy and milk expert of the bureau of health of Portland, said yesterday that Portland has high-grade milk and that families are doubling their use of milk. As a result, the health rec ord of the city's children Is said to be good and the rate of Infant mor tality Is low. He declared that the milk survey and the educational work of the dairy council Is of great value to the city and state. A surprise of the milk survey mui the showing that in Marion. Slarlon county, the home of Vive la France. Oregon's world-famous Jersey who broke all records, there are, in one school. 33 children out of 53 who aro getting no milk in their diet. At present. Miss Lutie Sterns, of Milwaukee, Wis,, a prominent club woman and lecturer. Is In Portland, telling mothers why they should give their children "balanced rations" in which milk is an important factor. Survey Figures Compiled.
