These are two rad lcally extreme views and one is about as reasonable as the other. I have recently visited the Verdun section and traveled by automobile and army truck all over the famous battle field. Beyond Verdun at Romaigne where there were 20,000 American sol dlers in camn. including 8000 negro warriors. I was greatly impressed with the American national cemetery (the Argonne cemetery), where about 30.000 of our boys will rest under French sod. Up to June 9. 13.801 had been brought in and burled and on that day, June 868 were placed in their final resting place, being taken from the graves on the battlefields. Working by the aid of a great electric lighting system, the work goes on by night as well as by day. Near Cuperly I saw another American cemetery where several thousands of our lads lie. - At Verdun I found signs of returning life, for there are a couple ot hotels and two or three cafes, to say nothing of soma small stores operating. But It is a ruined, blasted place, surrounded by trenches, crossing and criss-crossing with dugouts and shell holes dotting the country. The bell of war has swept hill and plain. It Is understood the proceeds of this dance will be used In the purchase of a pulmotor and life line for the bath ing beach. Chester Olcott. eldest son of Gover nor Ben W. Olcott, was a recent ar rival at the West Hut. Mrs. Olcott. with Richard Hutton and Gordon West, reached Cannon Beach July 4 and will remain for the season. Mr. and Mrs. H. I. Patten and son. A. P. (Special.) Motor parties to Neah-Kah-Nie were the popular mode of travel over the Fourth for a week-end stay and then on to Seaside. Cannon Beach or Tillamook. Among those who enjoyed the hos pitality at the Tavern were Mr.- and Mrs. Maud Spencer and son Frank Jr., John Ker and family, and Mr. and Mra Stanley Jewett. who came In from Sea side and reported the road in excel lent condition. A light rain failing Friday night made travel back to Port land most pleasant. Many people took advantage, too, of the week-end train put on Saturday NEWPORT, Or., July' 12. (Special.) Boy Scouts of this city hiked to Wald port on the 4th to take part in the patriotic . parade. Ths march was made in four and one-half hours. Professor C. M. McKellio and Mra McKellip of Portland are- occupying their Newport cottage. Professor Mc Kellip is suffering from a . nervous breakdown and expects to stay here a year. Mrs. Delia Crowder Miller of the faculty of Willamette university and son Orvil were here for the week-end. Mrs. Pat Cowan of Revelstoke. B. C will spend the summer visiting rela tives here. Mrs. Frank O. Jones of Pasadena, CaL, arrived Tuesday and will remain during tbe summer. Rev. Mr. Jones will join her. later. Mrs. Grant A. Covell, daughter Mar garet, and sons.
