Within a few days a party of ban dits, commanded by the Arellano broth ers, burned a large part of the village of Tlapocoyan, causing an undetermined number of casualties. Another attack by Pedo Gabay, falsely reported killed, on the Alvarad orailway .near Salinas, claimed la passengers and 15 soldiers as victims. The only military success registered was the attack on a military train near Tierra Blanca, on the Isthmus railway, at a point known as "Devil's Back bone." by forces under the rebel lead ers, Vlllegas and Lagunes. When his parents met him in Port land he was fresh from the battle front where for 32 months he had helped bold the Hun at bay. And throughout ail that time received not one scratch. Sergeant Cook, when asked what was the hottest battle In which he was en gaged, said that it would be hard to decide between several such as Pas schendale. Vimy ridge. Hill No. 70. Wellington Cook is one of three Cook boys who were in France during th war. David and Marvin are still there. David ls a member of the old Third Oregon and his brother, Marvin, is with the aviation corps. Wellington was in British Columbia at the time of the breaking out of the war and cast his lot with the Canadians. FIGHT ON "HOPPERS" WINS Farmers In Harney County Are Saved Immense Sums. OREGON AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE. Corvallis. July 6. (Special.) Farmers of the Harney vallsy estimate that sev eral thousand dollars has been saved them through the campaigns against grasshoppers waged last year and again this season under the direction of B. C. Thompson, special field agent of the United States bureau or ento mology, co-operating with the college extension service. Mr. Thompson has Just returned to the college. Last year It was estimated that 1:50, 000 was saved the farmers and this year the work was even more effective. In some sections the grasshoppers were completely eradicated by means of the poison distributed. A PROCLAMATION. We the representatives of the various Portland unions who voted to strike for Mooney. and the delegates of the Cen tral Labor Council's Mooney committee. yesterday sent a resolution to the Cen tral Labor Council and the metal trades council ot tnis city, urging an worKers this locality to cease work on July Fourth at 12 noon for five consecutive days, as a protest against the continued mprlsonment of Thomas J. Mooney. As union men, as workers and as men we appeal to you. do not fail when the test of your strength comes on Monday and Tuesday. July 7 and S. The United States naval transport Lake Elizabeth, the big relief ship char tered specially by the American tlea Cross to bring supplies to Rumania, has arrived with great quantities of food, oil. soap, hoapital supplies, ctbthing. sheets, thread, needles and sewing machines. The American Red Cross is endeav oring to meet the great need among the poor for clothing. It already has given out such a great number of gar ments that its stocks have been great ly depleted. But Colonel Henry W. An derson. chief commissioner of the American Red Cross for the Balkan states, who came to Rumania on th. Isake Elizabeth, said he expected soon to receive several thousand additional tons of clothing from America. HUN SURRENDER SURPRISE "Y" Secretary, Armed With Cane. Gathers in Three Boches. Capturing Germans was not 'one of the duties imposed upon T. M. C. A secretaries in France, but it fell to the lot of one secretary to gather in three bboches and turn them over to Corporal R. F. Oavies, 130th Infantry, 33d divi sion. "When our division captured Hill 304 on the morning of September 26, said Corporal Davies in telling of the in cident, "we moved into the village or Germania from which the Germans had been driven. That same after noon our T. M. C. A. secretary came un with a sidecar motorcycle loaded with chocolate and cookies. Looking for a place to open shop he entered a cellar. "It was rather dark. As he came out thnee Germans were following him, two with their hands up. He turned round and saw them and noticed what one was carrying a machine gun. The only weapon the 'V man had was a cane. I happened to be going along there just then with some oth-er prisoners we had taken and he called me over to relieve him of his unexpected captives. The department of civilian relief of the Rumanian mis sion of the American Red Cross, which Is under the direction of Major George Twose of Chicago, and Miss Florence M. Patterson of Burlington, Wis, now has relief stations and canteens at Constanaa. Galatx. Jassy. Buzeu. Ilfov, Pitestl, Campalone, Bucharest. At Focsanl alone more than 60.000 meals are given out weekly to the des titute population. All these cities are centers for a large number of villages.
