Hazeltine. stricken last Saturday with paralysis, died at bis home at Canyon City Tuesday evening;, a youth he removed t ith his parents to St. Charles, 111., and from there with his brother he departed in 1853 for California. They established themselves as photographers in San Francisco and In 1855 Mr. Hazeltine interested him self in mining at Colona, Cal.. where he remained until 1SC0, in which year he reached Canyon Creel:, then the richest ged 82 years, and was burled today. Judge Hazeltine had been a resident ef Canyon continuously since 1860, one of the most prominent of Eastern Ore gon pioneers and among the last sur vivors of early mining days. Interested all his life in mining as well as other business affairs. Judge Hazeltine also entered prominently into the public lairs of Grant County. He was County Judge for eight years and served term as County Treasurer, as well as hoUlng the office of City Recorder of Canyon City for upward of a quarter of a century, resigning from that posi tion'only a few weeks ago. George Irving Hazeltine was born In Cattaraugus County, ew York. When . placer diggings in Eastern Oregon. He established the first pack train service between Canyon and The Dalles and with his father-in-law, A. R. McCallum, built and placed In operation the firs (louring mill in Eastern Oregon, at the present site of the village of John Day. He married In snasta jouniy, au fornla.
