Or., July 20. (Special.) Women who have come to the sea shore have not forgotten the needs for women's service In the war. There Is abundant evidence of this in the good attendance at the Red Cross work rooms, where many dressings of sphag num moss are daily being made and by plans for benefits for war work soon to be held. Saturday. July 27, will be Forget-me-not Day under the auspices of the Oregon Committee for Relief of Children in Belgium and France, and It is expected that the citizens of Sea side and the visitors will be very grate ful for the opportunity of helping in this splendid work of mercy. All the workers are most enthusiastic and s eplendid result is expected. Mrs. Julius Louisson is general chairman for Sea side, with Miss Oertrude Talbot chair man for Gearhart. An attractive programme is being ar ranged for a concert and jitney-dance to be given for the benefit of the Red Cross of Seaside, Saturday evening, August 10. Mayor Paget is chairman of the committee which is undertaking to procure the best possible talent for the concert. A splendid attendance of the War Welfare League was held Friday at which forty housewives were completed. Mrs. Ruth Schweitzer, president of the League, is the guest of Mrs. Henry Wftzger for a few days. Hon. A. S. Bennett and Mrs. Bennett are at their cottage on Tenth avenue. Mrs. Herman Metzger and Miss Mar Ian Bauer, who have been the guests of the Marcus Fleischners for the past week, returned to Portland Sunday. Mrs. Emil Frank is the guest of the Henry Franks in Murlark Cottage. Judge Gilbert W. Phelps and family, of Pendleton, have arrived for the sea son. Judge Phelps Is a devotee of golf and spends, a great deal of time on the links at Gearhart. Col. David M. Dunne was a week-end Visitor with his family. Mrs. John 'Clemson, who was a guest of Mrs. Wm. H. Boone for a fortnight, has returned to her home in Portland. Mrs. Boone accompanied her and re turned Saturday with Mrs. Flangus and son, who .will be her guests for a ehort time. Mrs. Albert Simon Is the guest of Iter daughter, Mrs. Harry Meyer. Mrs. Samuel Margulles and children tnotored down from Portland with her brother, Edward Cohen, and spent a few days at the Hotel Moore. Miss Marian Citron is the guest of Mrs. William H. Ehrman for a few days; Mr. Ehrman was a week-end visitor. Mrs. Alice Benson Beach spent a few days with her children at the Shamrock Cottage in the grove. I. N. and Marcus Fleischner spent a few days in Portland and returned on Saturday. Mrs. W. K. Smith is the guest of the Joseph Harper Smiths at their attract ive cottage. George W. McMath spent Sunday 'with his family. Mr. and Mrs. Plowden Stott are vis itors at the Lansing Stout cottage on the north board walk. Miss Anne C. Chalmers Is the guest of Mrs. F. S, Belcher at the Piper cot tage. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Delovage and daughter, Mary Lou, of Butte, Montana, are making an extended visit; they are at the Hotel Moore. Among the Astorians who motored over last week were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Callender. Miss Getta R. Wasserman has gone to Portland to remain for a few days, accompanying her brother-in-law. Dr. R. J. Chipman, who was a week-end visitor at their cottage at Wahanna. Dr. Carl Hoffman, of Seattle, H. W. Robinson, of Tacoma, Mrs. Joseph Wood and Lieutenant C. Rainey were among the well-known folk at the Moore last week. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Morris, mother, nd sister are expected at the Hotel Moore within a few days to spend some weeks there. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Robison and son spent several days at Hotel Moore last week. Henry Wagner, Sr., accompanied his eon to Seaside for a week-end visit. They returned to Portland In their machine. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dickey have taken a cottage for the season. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Bates and their house guests. Dr. and Mrs. George D. Peters and children, returned Friday to Portland. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Coulter, of Wel eer, Idaho, and their children are in the Merrill cottage on the south board walk. E. O. McCoy and family. of The Dalles, have - leased the Gilbert cottage on L:,e ooardwalk. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Holbrook (Elsa Koerner). who are spending part of their honeymoon in Seaside, left Fri day in company with Mr. and Mrs. Bert Erwin, of Astoria, for a hike to Tilla mook. They will also go on to New port for a brief stay. Lieutenant Walter Davies, U. S. A., cf Portland, spent a few days last week In Seaside. Mrs. A. C. Panton entertained about tow dozen friends with a "sunset cof fee" party Friday evening at her home on the boardwalk. The guests came for after-dinner coffee and remained to view the wonderful sunset, sunsets having been especially lovely the past week. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley C. E. Smith and children, who have been spending the past month in the Smith cottage on the boardwalk, left Monday for Portland In their machine. Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Fields were house guests of the Stan ley Smiths recently and Mrs. Robert Hagood and daughter also were their puests for a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Fields and Mr. Smith motored back to Portland last week. Mr. and Mrs. William Gadsby and family are occupying their cottage on Third street for the season. Mrs. Davles and daughter, Mrs. Bruce Rowan and her children, are es tablished In the Webb cottage. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Meyers returned to Portland this week. Mrs. M. R. GIRLS HAVE WAR TREASURES Gearhart Children, With Trench Caps, Envy of Their Playfellows. GEARHART. Or., July 20. (Special.) Little Mary Louise and Elizabeth Zan, daughters of Dr. and Mrs. James C. Zan, are quite the envy of the other little girls and boys at Gearhart be cause they are the proud possessors of fascinating Franch trench caps. The caps were sent them from France by their uncle, Russel Smith, who is In the 20th Forestry Engineers. They are adorned with gold braid and the Insig nia of the French Engineers and are made of the French blue cloth. Mrs. Zan spent the week-end In Port land, returning Monday to her cottage here. Dr. and Mrs. George A. Marshall and children are In their cottage for the Summer. Mr. and Mrs. Chester G. Murphy and daughters arrived Saturday and expect to pass the Summer In the Kinney cot tage. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Grelle, Jim and Elizabeth and Mrs. James Henry are occupying the Henry cottage. They are ..domiciled at the Moore HoteL LONG BEACH RIOT OF COLOR Gardens at Their Best and Flowers Galore for Everybody. LONG BEACH. Wash., July 20. (Spe cial.) Gardens make this section of the peninsula a veritable bower of mar velous coloring and bloom. Sweet peas and dahlias are especially admired, the H. H. Tinker gardens being particularly noted for their wonderful sweet oeas. and the North Beach Inn gardens for their splendid specimens of dahlias. Deftly arranged between rows of blooms are vegetables and small fruits, raised for family consumption. The flowers are generously donated to all friends of the growers and many of the small girls and boys sell them to the cottagers for the Red ,Cros fund and other patriotic purposes. Thrift stamps are the incentive for many of the young salesmen, who are eager to fill several books during their Summer vacation. A bit of excitement and Interest was created among the residents of Long Beach by the appearance of about 50 artillerymen of the United States Army on Wednesday morning, who rested from their long hike, and then went through maneuvers for a short time on the beach. Mr. and Mrs. John Stack, of Walla Walla, former residents of this section. are being welcomed back after an absence of five years. SEAVIEW GARDEN'S NEGLECTED Farmers Desert Tracts for Work In Cities and Plots Go to Waste. SEAVIEW, Wash.. July 20. (Spe cial.) War - is showing: its effect on gardens, farms and homes in this part of the peninsula- The lack of help has caused farmers to abandon their tracts and homes for more remunerative em ployment . In the cities, consequently, garden truck is being- wasted. It is almost Impossible to get fresh fruits or vegetables. Tear-round . residents have their own gardens tended by the women of the households and in sev eral oases, they sell a small amount of vegetables and. fruits to the Summer visitors. One of the largest bonfire parties of the season was given by Miss Orltae Wllliford on Friday evening on the beach in front of the Hackney cottage. The party, which Included many promi nent Portland, girls and boys, was chaperoned by Mrs. T. C. Bloomer. Mrs. A. O. Flndlay apd Mrs. H. T. Mutzlg. Games and singing to the accompani ment of ukeleles. and dancing to graphaphone music were the features of the evening. Later many appetizing concoctions were prepared over the bonfire. (Special.) The big event of the past week here was a military ball given by the offi cers of the Taquina Bay district Wednesday evening. This affair was the most brilliant social function of the season and was well attended. Among the Portland visitors here during the week were Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Mesch. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Baker and fam ily, of Portland, have arrived here to remain for several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Ross, of Spring field, are among- the guests here. Mr. and Mri. Frank Brown, of Carl ton, are enjoying a brief sojourn here; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hunt, of Cor vallis, are here for a week's visit. Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Rice, of Portland, are among the visitors here. Mrs. Robert McMurray, of Albany, arrived at Newport Monday and will pass the remainder of the season at the Alkeramo with friends.
