Issuance of tho notification is a war
measure and has an especial slgnifl
cance in -the Northwest, where explo
sives are used extensively In develop
ment work. The licenses, which ar
made obligatory, are for the protectio
of the public from alien enemies or
other lawless persons. Tbe notice say
in part:

agents have been appointed In the va
rious counties of the respective states
and on-establlshlng Identity and char

or allied countries can obtain license
to use or vend explosives. The genera
rule Is laid down that the licensee mus

under oath Is not sufficient and unless
the applicant Is personally well known
to the. licensor, he will demand several
reputable cltlsena known to himself as
vouchers for the applicant.'

Governor's office to . determine how
many gallons of Intoxicating liquor
there are being held by Sheriffs and
municipal officers In Idaho that can be
urned over to the Government for. re
distilling so that the alcohol can be ex
tracted for the use In the war Indicates
tbe early predictions are correct, that
there are between 5000 and 6000 gal
lons of perfectly good whisky, which
at bootleg prices would bring a high
figure.
Out of 23 counties heard from only
six are without a supply of the fer
mented beverage on hand, and they are
only ahort because, under orders of the
court, they had prevtcuialy destroyed
he consignments of liquor seised from
bootleggers. They are Washington.
Payette, tjem. Boiae, Idaho and Lewis
counties.

morning the thought occurred to me
'what have I to be thankful forT This
thought was answered to my complete
satisfaction when I gaxed down the
long ranks of healthy men. I cannot
but realise that It is not alone the per
sonnel of the men that has kept this

The building of 40 miles of track on
the Valley & Siletx Railway, between
Independence and the Siletz basin, has
opened up the largest body of yellow
fir timber on any one watershed in the
state.
The camp of the Valley & Siletx Log
ging Company is said tobe the most
modern In Oregon.' All buildings are
painted and all bunks and springs are
of steel. Sidewalks are under construc
tion, and tbe camp is electrically
lighted. A free library, clubhouse,
shower baths and an emergency hos
pital are some of the ' conveniences.
Eighty men are employed in the unit
now operating.
Logs are being shipped at the rate of
300,000 feet dally. Two logging trains
are operated dally and passenger ser
vice was installed Wednesday.
