The prosperity la strictly "war-time prosperity." In New York, Chicago, Pittsburc. Cleveland and In every man ufacturing center a colden stream has been poured Into the coffers of the ' fortunate. All has been made aa clear profit upon war material. The steel mills are taking orders now for de livery In two and three years. - And when folks say the war will soon be over, this statement may give them food for thoucht. Mar Areata Inspect Horses. In Chicago last week, for Instance, I went out to the Union Stockyards. In the huge amphitheater attendants were runnlnr horses up and down. The crack of whip and the shouts of the attendants a they galloped the horses through their paces was not play, for every horse was belnr Inspected by trained men from the European battle fields. All those horses were going to war. New York and Chlcaro. of course. are the big gambling centers. Boston, Pittsburg. Cleveland and smaller towns also have their traders, but nothing like the two big cities. Wall street is a busy thoroughfare these days, and tome of the boys who haven't tasted the fruits of wealth for many years are now "back on the velvet." as they express It- And the barroom tickers are Just as busy aa those in the brokers officea. Many nddealy Rich. Chemical are proving an interesting field of operation and considerable gambling Is being done on these. And woe to the manufacturing chemist who didn't have the foresight to stock up on these roods. Today many are on the ragged edge and to my personal knowledge one company i taking all lt men off the road. They will not be active again until chemicals be- ome cheaper. In New York one hears many tales of audden rises from poverty to at tluence. Waiters, you are told, be came wealthy in a nlrht. Many are the tale one hears. And not all are fic titious, but. of course, the Imaginative -nlnd loves to elaborate. And when Wall atreet la prosperoua New York lis up, takes a new lease on life and. like Jack Horner, says. "What a wise boy am I. Bankers Make Mllllona. In Cleveland a few day ago I was talking with the cashier of one of the 'argest bank. I asked him w hetner the -ver had not helped his business. "The president of this bank," he an swered, "has made millions since lie ar began. He was Interested In steel -nllls. and the . war simply poured wealth upon him. It all re verts bnc-k to the old question of. "What have you to sell?" The tourist trade to the Pacific- Coast will be the greatest In the history of the country. The Eastern people have money. Lots of it. And tney are going to go some where to spend it. Naturally, they look to the Pacific Coast, It's the only place they can look to. The movement w hlch you have start ed ought to stimulate this trade. The letter-writing campaign was great. And it 1m up to the people of Oregon to entertain those visitors, for they are surely coming. Tnat is certain. And they, as usual, will crave attention and excitement. But they are ncj: forgetting that before this war started many men who are now prosperous . walked : the streets almost penniless. 'The manu facturers haven't forgotten what strin gent times we had before this war. While there are jobs now, the working, man remembers there were not Jobs then. So they are hanging on to some of their earnings, for they are jut a little bit afraid things migl; t revert back to conditions when the war ends. "Inflated war prosperity." ; That is Just what we have In the. East. And what i to follow no one can say, for no one knows. STEAMER LINE IS ACCUSED Hose liushes Brought From Cali fornia Said to Bo Diseased. For bringing Into the state rose bushes said to be diseased; .charges have been filed In the District Court against the Northern Pacific Steam ship Company and its agent, A. P. Nott. by State Horticultural Inspector J. E. Stansbery. Inspector Stansbery maintains that he has often cautioned the company against introducing nursery stock into the state without notifying him. as re quired by the 1913 session laws, but that his warnings have bfen disre garded. By chance, he said, he dis covered seven boxes of rose bushes at a local florist's, tsuveral had to be de stroyed.
