VISTA FUND NOW $1200 AMOIM FOR COLI.DBIA HIGHWAY .MEMORIAL CROWS DAILY. ipuli Srmt Ont to AatawobilUt to DoBate for Honaeit to Ploaeersj Bear Fruit. The fund for the Vista House, through the solicitation anions auto- mobile owners of the county alone, already has risen to more than $1200 in cash and pledges and each mail is bringing more an4 more contributions to the office of the treasurer of the association. In beginning: the canvass for funds the Vista House Association decided to make its first appeal to the automobile owners, as the ones who will most use the Columbia Highway, and naturally will be most deeply interested in the memorial monument to the pioneers which is to be embodied in the great rest station to be built on Crown Point. Their letters went out early last week, and the responses have fully justified their expectations. The list of pledges and of cash do nations up to last night follows: Pledges. The passing of the saloon brings to my mind the long struggle through which we in this state have passed to accomplish this result. I remember how my father advocated the abolish' ment of the saloon before many re garded it as possible. When a little girl my father would say: "The saloons should be closed up. In Boston, when I left in '48, there were no saloons. We must abolish them in Oregon." He referred to the first prohibition movement prior to the Civil War, when lour New England states bad pro hibition. .My father passed away In 1887. the year of the first campaign for closed saloons. His last sermons were on that subject. I cannot but think he knows now and rejoices. My brother. 11. S. Lyman, edited prohibition paper that Winter in this city, the Prohibition star.' which ror a while had a good circulation. We cannot forget the pioneer workers, who endured much opposition and even abuse in carrying on this reform. Then only a few individual church members stood for it. The great ma jority said: "The saloon is a bad thing, but what can you do against it? It did look almost impossible, with the saloon dominant in politics, running both parties. It was a dan gerous work to oppose it. One minister, who did so in this city, and laid bare the violations of the laws fostered by the saloon powers. was severely beaten on dark night near his home. Another, also, was attacked by hired thugs because he opposed them. The first organized agencies in this plate prior to the prohibition party were the Good Templars. Lodges were organized among the young people and became popular. They gave equal recognition to women, and their ritual is a very beautiful one. .Many women. afterward leaders in the Women's Christian Temperance Union, were members. Hundreds of young people became total abstainers. When the Women's Christian Tem perance Union and Prohibition party w-ere organized, they found many al ready educated In their principles. Among them are many now grown gray in the service, like Mrs. M. K. lloxten. who was first a Good Templar, and then a Women's Temperance Union woman. Her greatest work was the mothering of a bill through the Leg islature, giving scientific temperance instruction in the public schools, a measure which, more than any other, made Oregon dry. All honor to those who first stood for this great reform, who knew no defeat, but wbo after dealt what peo ple regarded as a crushing blow, went right in for a new campaign. The children, now grown, also have "made good." Some of them have passed on. One, L H. Amos, almost eeeins the reform put in practice, others living to rejoice In the "new day" dawning in our state. SARAH I. LYMAN. AQUATICS ARE DEFENDED Writer Thinks Happiness and Value in Life Saving Is Worth Cost. PORTLAND. Jan. 13. (To the Edi tor.) I noticed an interesting word controversy a few days ago between jour good self and a new brand of feminist, yclept "Thimble." I think that the honorable and at the same time humble domestic art of "sewing" presented the main breach of misunder standing, but that the discussion branched off to swimming. I will clarify myself here to the reader, I am an ardent aquatic supporter and whenever I get an opportunity to de fend swimming, either as an exercise or as a recreation, I do so. Thimbles asks: "Will swimming fit our boys and girls for anything that will help them in any vocation In after years?" If the practical applica tion of the laws of hygiene and cleanli ness, a healthy body, the symetrical de velopment of the muscles, heart and luns and a knowledge of clean, com petitive sport and life-saving mean anything to an Individual, then swim ming will certainly give our boys and girls one of the best foundations pos sible for life's hard but interesting battle. Health is life and exercise Is health, so I am sure the majority will over rule "Thimble's" feeble attack and at f he same time overlook her chagrin at beinar won over to this same majority. 1 have investigated pretty thorough' ly the swimming situation in the Port' land schools and I. for one, am glad that my tax pittance helps along such a nooie cause ior the young roik. on has only to look at the ruddy happy faces of a tank full of Portland school children in order to see the swimming appropriation loom up as a good Samaritan to the poor and rich children alike. I find that the swimming Instructors put in eight hours a day for which they receive 980 a month. Each instructor has from 500 to 600 pupils weekly and when the warm Spring term comes this number will easily be advanced to 1000 weekly. One instructor working eigh hours a day and receiving J80 monthly with 500 pupils weekly would cost the taxpayers 4 cents per pupil monthly. This covers four swims of 43 minutes each and pays for the instruction and guarding of the pupil. Or to narrow it down further, it costs the taxpayer 1 cent per swim. Then revert to "Thimble's" ally, the PIO.VEER APARTMEXT-HOCSE ARCHITECT DIES !' ' PORTLAND. Alexander Charles Eve art. Alexander Charles Ewart. pioneer apartment-house archi tect of Portland, died in this city Saturday, January 8. Mr. Ewart was born in On tario, Canada. October 3. 1854. He came to Oregon in 1878. first locating in Corvallis. where he married Miss Nettie Chase, Feb uary 2, 1881. Several years later, failing health necessitated a change of climate and he moved to. Victoria. B. C. and later to Nelson. Finding the northern climate too severe, he passed a ' year in Los Angeles, coming to Portland in 1904. He had been ill for several years preceding his death. Mr. Ewart is survived by his widow and five children, as fol lows: Mrs. C. J. Steele and Misses Evelyn and Erma Ewart, of Portland, and Fred E. Ewart. of East Lynne. Mass., and Dale S. Ewart, of Astoria. There are five grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted by Rev. L. K. Grimes, at Central Presbyterian Church. In terment was at Rose City Ceme tery. sewing teacher working 5 hours a day and receiving $135 monthly and Raving charge of 600 pupils weekly. The taxpayers pay 60 cents a month per sewing pupil. The difference in teach ing a child to sew and to swim is 66 cents with sewing on the long end. Sewing can be taught at home but swimming cannot. Now will "Thimble" be good and not run down one of my favorite recrea tions. "Thimble" is a good suspector and decided that it was easier to sus pect than to find out the truth. If America is going to uphold her position she has to do it solely with the present, the coming and the future generations. We must do everything to upbuild the physical decline of our race ana any ciear-visloned citizen can easily perceive that swimming would do more than its share where the physical and hygienic qualities are concerned. There are about 15 schools using the two new school pools in Portland and an investigation will show that the cost of maintenance and instruction is not threatening bankruptcy. . CITIZEN. WOODBURN DEALERS UNITE Produce Clcarlng-House Association i'oraied by Merchants. WOODBURN. Or.. Jan. 15. (Special.) The Woodburn Produce Clearing- House Association has been formed by the merchants of this city and a large building leased to be used as a clearing-house. The object is to purchase at this house, eggs, poultry, dressed hogs and veal and later other farm products will be handled, the farmer getting the benefit of the highest market price. In this manner the merchants of Wood- burn propose co-operating with the farmers, particularly for the benefit of the latter. The clearinc-house also will form an "egg circle" and pay a fancy price for guaranteed eggs that, can be dis posed of to high-class trade. The pro ducers will be paid according to the quality of their products. The propo sition possesses original ideas and la pleasing to the farmers of this section. The clearing-house will be well pat ronized when it opens it doors next Monday morning. DAILY CITY STATISTICS Marriage License. LED YARD-TODD Ralph C Led yard.
